health care bill
AP / Susan Walsh

I’m just a bill ... : A copy of H.R. 3200, America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, sits on the desk of House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., after the markup on the health care bill was postponed Wednesday.

The good news, at least for those hoping for progress on the health care reform front, is that the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed the latest version of a bill aimed at revamping the nation’s flagging health care system. The bad news: Now that Congress is headed for a monthlong vacation, we’ll have a whole new round of squabbling to look forward to in September.

The Los Angeles Times:

To reach agreement, Waxman earlier this week had accepted conservative lawmakers’ demands to limit the bill’s price tag to $1 trillion over 10 years, exempt more small businesses from the employer-provided insurance mandate, and reduce the number of low-income people who would qualify for subsidized coverage.

But those changes provoked a backlash among liberals. To win them back, Waxman crafted a compromise that would restore low-income subsidies. The committee also added a major provision that would limit the premium increases that insurers could impose, and another that would let the government negotiate pharmaceutical prices under Medicare’s prescription drug program—a goal long sought by liberals as a way to reduce drug costs. (The idea was bitterly opposed by Republicans when the program was established in 2003, as critics questioned whether the government would secure discounts.)

The bill is designed to provide insurance for the 46 million people in the U.S. who now go without it; to curb healthcare costs; and to make it harder for companies to deny coverage or increase premiums.

I like Government and say call it what you want, With Government YOU ALWAYS HAVE A JOB. Because government is of the people and by the people, We elect who is to our leaders , and expect them to keep us running our country smoothly, and if there is to be a bail out let it be TO the American people, But who got the big bail out ? Not the people “Big Business” We are not even running our own country we the people did and still do not have control of our Country. Because we have elected leaders who have only their best interest at heart. Unless we develop a program that is social for the people so we can compete with big business for the jobs, then Big Business will topple us, we must start the process of gaining back in control of our UNITED STATES of American Market This Health Insurance bill is a start back to our prosperity. I WANT PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA to sit down @ the table of the congress and the senate the CEOs of big business Insurance Companies, and be our EYES and our EARS. Then speak to us, let us know who proposes what so that we may know who is against us. My Dear Brethren let not you be confused and follow the direction that Babble lead, or I can tell you of a time where even the ground under you feet can be sold from underneath you. And if that where to happen then let it be to thy neighbor or thy sister or brother and most of all to thy own children. THINK NOT OF DEBT but of thy inheritance. With Government we can put our markets back into working for the people. So that our wealth will come back to us and not to only the few. REMEMBER THE BIGGEST AND THE BEST INVESTMENT WE CAN MAKE IS TO THE HEALTH Of OUR PEOPLE.

One persons privilege is another’s right I guess….promoting the general welfare seems a good definition of govts concerns regarding health care.

I wonder how you rationalize the fact that we alone, among all industrialized nations, have no such universal health care for its citizenry? I would imagine, in the absence of your own definitions, you would fall back on the lies and distortions from the insurance industry claiming that all those nations have inadequate care…each and every one.

Nope, sorry, we have inadequate, horrifically expensive and very exclusive health care; care in which thousands are excluded all the time.

guacamaya - you are 100% wrong and your comments are dangerous to the rest of us.

1. Health care is not a right; it is a privilage.

2. Nothing comes for free. Free health care DOES NOT exist. In order to pay for any government program, The State must steal from someone to pay for it. There are no free lunches.

I will not get into education here, but it is evident that you have been through your State run indoctrination centers (aka government run schools) based on your comments and you probably have no clue what I’m talking about.

Great! Anything that will bankrupt (aka hyperinflate) Amerika sooner is a good thing.

Once the value of the currency (Federal Reserve Notes) are destroyed, then the empire will collapse and we can build a better society based on freedom and liberty.

I just returned
home this afternoon after an 8 day stay in another
one of our institutions of deceptions, the hospital.
A week ago Friday, I began having chest pains, fatigue, and swollen ankles.  I drove myself to the
emergency room.  After several hours of repositioning
myself on a very uncomfortable bed, I was transported
to my very own room.  About an hour later I became
violently sick.  My stomach distended and cramping
miserably, I ask the nurse to “Please get me a doctor” to which she replied “the doctor is making
rounds.  He will see you after rounds.”  I yelled,
“I am very ill.  I have to see him now!”  After she
left the room, I began uncontrolably voimiting on
the floor.  Through a weak whimper I mumbled, “I’m
sick.  I need to see a doctor.”  When she returned
I had crapped my pants, chilling uncontrolably,
running a fever of 103 with a sore throat and headache.  She finally got the doctor.  They inserted
two IV’s and began a regime of antibiotics.  Later,
I tried to call a college pal who was a retired lawyer from the patent office.  I tried to explain
to him what had just happened but was too weak to do
so.  The next day after beginning to feel slightly
better I called him again.  He said, “Yesterday, you
sounded like you were about dead!”  To which I replied, “That’s the worst I have ever felt in my life.  I thought I was going to be neglected until
I died.”  Several minutes later I had to hang up the
phone as my assigned physician, a middle aged woman,
followed by her flock of interns, walked into my
room.  Her first words were, “Oh, I remember you!”
I remember you!  What did that remark refer to?  After discussing my situation a few minutes I ask to
be seen by a cardiologist to which she responded,
“There’s nothing wrong with your heart!”  When I
inquired for the reasoning behind her brilliant
conclusion, she said,  “Your blood work shows there
is nothing wrong with your heart!”  I blurted very
unchristianlike “BULLSHIT!”  Her flock of interns
seemed taken back by my rude comment.  A male to the
left of my bed said something.  When I ask what he
said he remained silent.  Raising my voice I repeated
my question, “What did you say?”  He murmured “nothing.”  I proceeded to explain to the
educated deceptive doctor that blood work tells you
whether or not I have had a heart attack.  Nothing
more.  Nothing less.  She avoided the subject and
left the room.  After a series of tests it was
determined I had the Swine Flu.  I continued to wear
a diaper full of diarrhea.  Wonderful experience!
After 3 days in the hospital the doctor decided it
was time for me to go home.  When I reminded her
that I was not feeling well and lived by myself,
she said, “Oh, we will have home health care check
your vital signs periodically.”  The next day while
still in the hospital the chills, fever of 103 and
extreme fatigue returned.  She decided to keep me.
I had heard on TV news about people dying of the
Swine Flu.  I decided to publicize my experiences.
I called the local TV station and spoke with a
reporter.  She said she would get back to me.  Well,
guess what?  She didn’t!  This morning as I was
packing to come home the respiratory therapist stuck
his head in my room and said,  “I’m glad to see you
are doing fine.  Last week after leaving your room
I didn’t think you were going to make it.”  I thanked
him for his concern and told him there were a few times I didn’t think I was going to make it.  While
driving home I thought, “Perhaps, I should contact
President Obama.  Maybe he, the ignorant deceptive
doctor and myself could sit in the Rose Garden and
discuss the perils of an incompetent deceptive
medical profession.  The discussion would not be
over beer of course.  It would be over water, a much
better example to the children.

“Good news”? THAT’S funny! The claimed issue of cost for so-called reform is completely fraudulent. While bickering over a lousy $100 billion goes on among Dems, no one mentions what we’re all already paying for this—seriously piece of shit—system we’ve been stuck with for decades. Pols in service of all industries talk of taxes we might have to pay while forgetting to mention that in the event of single-payer we might finally be relieved of outrageous pay-outs in the form of insurance-biz premiums, which insurance-biz use to become bankers. Insurance outfits are bigger lenders than banks. And bigger investors. AIG is an insurance outfit, not a bank. Your healthcare-insurance premiums are forked over to banks/brokerages disguised as insurance companies.

Suppose that in exchange for $500 per month spent on premium you (including family members) had only to pay $100 per month in tax? At which point some kind of mandate would make some sense under circumstance of capitalism. (The last part always necessary qualifier as capitalism is, obviously, externally irrational. “Irrational” from the standpoint of humanism, and/or from standpoint of all religions: when objectification of human subject is absolutely necessary for capitalism to function at all. Capitalism IS internally logical, thereby allowing for stuff like econometrics, which if not the most “dismal science” is the most constrained science. Since about two centuries, capitalism has become inhumanity incarnate. The most destructive force the world—including animal other than human and plant inhabitants, has ever experienced. But we perversely irrationally love and adore maw capitalism so, so much. Far more than we claim to love Mother Nature.)

ALL would be included, thereby spreading wider what in the insurance biz is called “risk.” (Which is one reason Medicare works pretty well. Though still with the “supplemental” crap. My mom’s been dead going on six months and we’re still getting bills.) So mandate would make sense in that case. As would—always and again under circumstances of privilege (provided solely but cut-rate labor) for the few—progressive taxation. Which even Obama’s advocating.

But unless single-payer system is instituted, even progressive taxation will make no difference. Not least because admin cost of privatized bureaucracy is about one thousand percent greater than for government bureaucracy. (Far as we can determine, based on success of single-payer at somewhat more civilized locales. Places less bent on empire at least. No problem with about $650 billion for ass-kicking.)

What we’ve got here is a fraudulent argument concerning only how much will remain privatized. (Hopefully for Blue Curs, every bit of it.) Instead of “reform,” merely pretense to “reform,” so that private insurers might carry on extracting blood from turnips while continuing to bribe career politicians for long as willing to do bidding. Which is all Obama means when he claims, “can’t be done.” Certainly not when governors are so easily, and cheaply too, bought. And/or as they too worship at the feet of capitalist goddess. Capitalist-goddess foot (commodity) fetish, indeed with no clue of use value. Anymore than of religions in which all claim to believe.

Which is to where selling out (materially and psychically) in the interest of capital gains leads—economic-politically, socio-culturally, and finally, individually. Inevitably incorrigibly, not remotely surprisingly.

Forget about it. Even if “reform” passes, “nothing too serious.” Or maybe very serious. At best, we can only hope that cure won’t turn out worse than disease. Which likelihood isn’t beyond unlikely. Recall a certain “donut hole”? Manufactured not long ago by Congress. Only Congress could make a vacuum into yet one more source of profits for sponsors/bribers. Cost my mom a bundle before she too passed.

I wonder if those responsible for projecting the cost of government paid health care are taking into account the apparent unhealthy nature of those in this country of recent generations (mostly those under age 40) who seem to place great importance on tatoos, but whose diet is composed primarily of fast food, doughnuts and soft drinks - the diabetes generation. I left out those who smoke simply because they will on average die sooner thus saving the treasury quite a bit on social security payments. It is the overweight population that scares me. These people are going to require massive amounts of health care and prescription drugs. If these costs are not projected into the budget, all bets are off. They make break the rest of us.

Apparently, people who do not have an underlying “pre-condition” should understand that those of us(10% of diabetics)who cannot adjust to cloned insuloin are unable to work and any discussion of a single payer option should be included in any/private government program.  Those of you that choose to pay a higher fee to see a licensed drug pusher cam do so.  But why should the rest of us pay for your exhorbidant prices to do whatever.  Sorry, but it has to work for everyone.

The very basic of any civilized country is that all it’s citizens have a right to a good education and free medical service. In the European Union they get that right. However each country runs it’s own education and health service and consequently it’s better in some than others. Citizens from one EU country are free to live and work in another EU country and also to use it’s free health service. I live in Spain and retired British living here often write to the papers praising the service here as being superior to the British one. From what I understand the main problem in Britain is that you have to wait so long.

However one does not need to use the free health service because you can also buy private health insurance which is reasonably cheap. I have private health insurance, but I doubt that it’s superior to the free Spanish service, but I do have a choice of doctors and can see one more conveniently. My insurance entitles me to see a doctor unlimited times, have every type of operation (I have just had 2 cataract) , X-rays, laboratory tests, private hospital accommodation, ambulance service etc.. In fact everything except any medicines you may have to buy once you leave hospital. I am 81 years old and that costs me 483.29€ every 3 months .... or about US$677.

It is not only a moral obligation for a country to give it’s citizens a good education and making sure that they stay healthy but it is also making an investment in the future of that country.

The start year for HR 3200 is 2013 and beyond.

This gives the insurance industry plenty of time to kill tens of thousands of Americans, and bankrupt even more.

The bill is no good. The timeline is unacceptable. It is truly a sell-out to the insurance industry.

What will inevitably come out of Congress will be no solution at all to our health care fiasco. While lawmakers struggle to continue their relationship with the for-profit health care industry it becomes blatantly obvious that the problem IS and remains for-profit care.

We see, all around us, even here in the supposed bastion of liberalism, the myths , distortions and lies surrounding the abortive attempt by our President and his minions in Congress to reign in the inflationary costs, discriminatory practices and exclusionary policies of our insurance industry while continuing to accept the millions of dollars in bribes from that industry. It cannot be done.

The Insurance Industry is spending over a million dollars a day to bend the new legislation to its own purpose. We are certainly aware of the absurd propaganda about the excellent health care available to the rest of the industrialized world, yet , in the absence of rebuttal from either the White House or the Democratic Party, people are prone to believe those lies.

Perhaps I am wrong in my assumption that the silence and silly attempts to compromise with those who seek , not compromise but the destruction of any such health care reform and the popularity of Barack Obama, represents collusion and a lack of commitment to such reform, instead showing a willingness to sell out the American people for another campaign contribution. Perhaps…..
