Obama Pushes Health Care in the Face of Delays

Posted on Jul 22, 2009
Barack Obama
White House / Lawrence Jackson

President Obama made an appeal Wednesday night for health care reform, complete with this zinger: “This isn’t about me. I have great health insurance, and so does every Member of Congress.” However, his Senate mentor, Dick Durbin, said not to expect a health care vote before the August recess. Excerpts from the president’s speech and video after the jump.

White House:

Excerpt of the president’s speech:

Office of the Press Secretary
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                         July 22, 2009

Excerpts of the President’s Opening Remarks at Tonight’s News Conference
-As Prepared for Delivery-

That is why I’ve said that even as we rescue this economy from a full-blown crisis, we must rebuild it stronger than before.  And health insurance reform is central to that effort.

This is not just about the 47 million Americans who have no health insurance.  Reform is about every American who has ever feared that they may lose their coverage if they become too sick, or lose their job, or change their job.  It’s about every small business that has been forced to lay off employees or cut back on their coverage because it became too expensive.  And it’s about the fact that the biggest driving force behind our federal deficit is the skyrocketing cost of Medicare and Medicaid.

So let me be clear:  if we do not control these costs, we will not be able to control our deficit.  If we do not reform health care, your premiums and out-of-pocket costs will continue to skyrocket.  If we do not act, 14,000 Americans will continue to lose their health insurance every single day.  These are the consequences of inaction.  These are the stakes of the debate we’re having right now.

I realize that with all the charges and criticisms being thrown around in Washington, many Americans may be wondering, “What’s in this for me?  How does my family stand to benefit from health insurance reform?”

Tonight I want to answer those questions.  Because even though Congress is still working through a few key issues, we already have agreement on the following areas:

If you already have health insurance, the reform we’re proposing will provide you with more security and more stability.  It will keep government out of health care decisions, giving you the option to keep your insurance if you’re happy with it.  It will prevent insurance companies from dropping your coverage if you get too sick.  It will give you the security of knowing that if you lose your job, move, or change your job, you will still be able to have coverage.  It will limit the amount your insurance company can force you to pay for your medical costs out of your own pocket.  And it will cover preventive care like check-ups and mammograms that save lives and money.

If you don’t have health insurance, or are a small business looking to cover your employees, you’ll be able to choose a quality, affordable health plan through a health insurance exchange – a marketplace that promotes choice and competition   Finally, no insurance company will be allowed to deny you coverage because of a pre-existing medical condition.

I have also pledged that health insurance reform will not add to our deficit over the next decade – and I mean it.

I understand how easy it is for this town to become consumed in the game of politics – to turn every issue into running tally of who’s up and who’s down.  I’ve heard that one Republican strategist told his party that even though they may want to compromise, it’s better politics to “go for the kill.”  Another Republican Senator said that defeating health reform is about “breaking” me.

So let me be clear:  This isn’t about me.  I have great health insurance, and so does every Member of Congress.  This debate is about the letters I read when I sit in the Oval Office every day, and the stories I hear at town hall meetings…This debate is not a game for these Americans, and they cannot afford to wait for reform any longer.  They are counting on us to get this done.  They are looking to us for leadership.  And we must not let them down.  We will pass reform that lowers cost, promotes choice, and provides coverage that every American can count on.  And we will do it this year.

Leefeller—20-80,000 people a year have no “patience of two year olds” left—they are dead.

US govt has had had 70-yrs to work on this and examples all ovet the industrial world. I’ll leave “patience” for people that have TIME.
Everything Obama does is so watered down, he reminds me of Reagan.

The House Health Care Bill, 1,018-page document, released this week (July 14th, 2009) reveals some concerns as noted by  and Mike Oliphant serves as health care consultant with these two popular websites in Utah. He also is a serving board member with Utah Association of Health Underwriters. A provision within this bill would indeed outlaw individual private coverage.  Under the Orwellian header of “Protecting The Choice To Keep Current Coverage,” the “Limitation On New Enrollment” section of the bill clearly states:

“Except as provided in this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the first effective date of coverage is on or after the first day” of the year the legislation becomes law.
This translates into those who currently have private individual coverage won’t be able to change it. It is likely that those same people will suffer abnormally high rate increases over time which would force them out of coverage. Nor will those who leave a company to work for themselves be free to buy individual plans from private carriers.
From the beginning, and  warned that if the government gets into the business of offering subsidized health insurance coverage, the private insurance market will wither. Drawn by a public option that will be 30% to 40% cheaper than their current premiums because taxpayers will be funding it, employers will gladly scrap their private plans and go with Washington’s coverage. The nonpartisan Lewin Group estimated in April that 120 million or more Americans could lose their group coverage at work and end up in such a program. That would leave private carriers with 50 million or fewer customers. This could cause the market to, as Lewin Vice President John Sheils put it, “fizzle out altogether.”
What wasn’t known until now is that the bill itself will kill the market for private individual coverage by not letting any new policies be written after the public option becomes law. The legislation is also likely to finish off health savings accounts, a goal that Democrats have had for years. They want to crush that alternative because nothing gives individuals more control over their medical care, and the government less, than HSAs. With HSAs out of the way, a key obstacle to the left’s expansion of the welfare state will be removed. states that the public option won’t be an option for many, but rather a mandate for buying government care. A free people should be outraged at this advance of soft tyranny. Washington does not have the constitutional or moral authority to outlaw private markets in which parties voluntarily participate. It shouldn’t be killing business opportunities, or limiting choices, or legislating major changes in Americans’ lives.

To idarad:

I can only hope that you and your loved ones are very healthy.  One accident or illness, minus reform, will allow the private insurers to gobble up everything you/they own.

It’s always amazing how liberal a conservative gets on his sickbed.

one in six americans do not have healthcare.  the number is likely to grow Because unemployment is not likely to go away soon.  did pres. say rate is 14,000 a day?  so that means more and more people will lose insurance in america.  in which case less people (individuals and families)to pay the premiums pool and the cost will rise for the ones that have insurance (take home pay a little less).  healthcare now more than ever needs to be overhauled otherwise it will be costly for america.  the less volume people buy of something the more its cost will rise.  why is that other advanced democratic nations australia, canada (by no means socialism countries)figured how to provide healthcare for all its citizens (if you don’t have good health in life you’ve got nothing) and america keeps losing coverage for more and more.  Obama is proactively addressing this before it Becomes another auto industry, financial industry disaster.  remember that busineses bottom line is to make a buck from customers.  governments looks serve and protect the people.  leave it to business and profit is the motive…we’ve had two lessons that costed the people outrageously…auto and finance.  continue the way america does business americans will pay in crises. need to accept reality of the times and get on board with pres. healthcare inititives.

Obama’s mentioning the sacred cow congress below, seems to be laying some groundwork responsibility at their feet and educating the people at the same time.

“I have great health insurance, and so does every Member of Congress.”

Evey negative Obama mentions about the insurance companies or congressmen is a little dose of reality for the naive citizens to consume.

Expecting Obama to make instant changes with a magic wand because he is president may be what is naive. Also can one decide if Obama really wants to make these changes or is he blowing smoke, seems to be some differences of opinion.

Sure, Obama is part of the system and is working within the confines of the system. Expecting Obama to shut out the insurances companies with the wave of a magic wand and install single payer seems naive.  The system for change sucks because it is full of holes and lacks insight and has little regard for the people.  Obama is all we have, expecting Obama to buck the power brokers seems most naive.

Some of the comments against Obama, seem to suggest they would prefer him be a fascist instead of working within the confines of the system?

So naive ones, start your revolution for the confined rules in place seems to be a real problem for those showing their impatience level of two year olds.

The skyrocketing cost of medicare and medicaid is a direct result of insurance companies receiving taxpayer dollars to “cover” these medical benefits.  We’ve witnessed this regarding the PURPOSEFUL doughnut hole implemented within medicare, and with medicaid wherein private insurance companies rake in the dollars which could be more efficiently utilized by offering better healthcare and NOT more profit.

Insurance companies are the bane of humanity, an unnecessary evil instituted for no other reason than to deny, deny, deny….. and when that doesn’t work they engage in deception and fraud.  This is universally accepted knowledge to The People, they know.  Of course they know, even aside from the unmitigated suffering by countless millions The People continue to live and die by it.

Everyday, every hour and every year….. how long, how long is too long to wait, how long will The People need to fight for what is rightfully theirs…. how many is too many to die?

Leefeller—You really need to take a look at what he’s selling…if 18,000 a year are still going to die, I dont really care if you get what you “wish ” for.

Its like Obamas doctor of 20 yrs said the American people are incredibly naive!!(from Democrayc Now! another Obama supporter)

It is not “
cynical” to ask for what the entire “free” world considers a human right (as well as the uN)

The site I listed has an article from the Black Agenda Report, hardly a right wing, “Obama-hating” paper…

Look up HR 3200..its a giant insurance corporation gift. It will leave millions without care, and, none of the uninsured will get anything until 2018. It CUTS Medicare and Medicaid funding and adds millions to Medicaid roles, withut funding it.

I guess the insurance industry and pharmaceutical industry will just “buck up” as Obama said,.still fooled by the rhetorical flair , I see…

I am really tired of so-called Liberals telliong me what a schill I am , when i dare to criticize Obama the Great , when he has sold real liberals so far down the river that we have missed the historic opportunity of our lifetime.

You are the one selling other liberals out by supporting this sham. If Obama had any guts—no, if the USAns had any guts—they would demand civilized care like the rest of the industrialized world.

They will give you what you accept. power cedes nothing and you dont ask for it. Shame.

Cynics united has lost no time promoting its unshackled war dance and anti Obama rhetorical nonsense, they should unite with the Republicans create a caucus to die for. According to the imbeciles on the right and opposition from within, one can expect nothing as usual.

Watching Obama speak tonight was most refreshing, for after eight years of watching raspberries coming from the white house, it finally seems something may be happening, even if it is not every frigging thing I desire, want, wish for and demand.

When Palin or her imbecilic counterpart wins president next time around, then maybe I can get the medical plan I desire, want, wish for and demand.

LOL…You people won’t let this man win…..He’s either wrong for initiating this whole healthcare reform b/c he’s “robbing from the rich and giving to the poor”, or he’s not pushing for a “everybody in and nobody out” singlepayer health system that everybody ( I guess the many republicans and wealthy democrats who are giving him a hard time don’t count)wants. He can only do 1, or the other, or nothing, but he CAN’T please everybody. I know the man is of color but damn he is your president…...

Individual mandate seems out, as does taxing the upper 99th Quintile ($300,00 a yr)—looks like just cutting care for old and poor is left…

Obama’s health care for suckers….(original from Black Agenda Report, copied to Cyranio’s Journal)

Can he get away with it?

“Maybe. Maybe not. If the corporate media and the president can keep discussion of the devilish details to a minimum, if they can silence, co-opt and intimidate the forces to Obama’s left — if they can keep most of the public inside their bubble of fake reality, Barack Obama may achieve his goal of thwarting the reform that most of the American people want — an everybody in, nobody out single payer health care system on the model of Canada or Australia, or Medicare for All. It won’t be close, it won’t be easy, and with nothing to be gained, progressives shouldn’t make it any easier.

Since the president’s success depends mostly on keeping people silent [11] and in the dark, he will probably be unable to mobilize the 13 million phone numbers and email addresses collected during the recent presidential campaign, and now held by OFA, his campaign arm. If an organizing call went out to them, too many would try to read the bill and discuss the options, and such a discussion could easily get out of hand. When OFA called house meetings on health care last December, the most frequently advanced question was why we couldn’t or shouldn’t get a single payer health care system.

Single payer isn’t dead yet. It’s very much alive among Barack Obama’s own supporters. To succeed, he has to bury it alive, to keep them in the bubble, in the dark and quiet, or clapping so loudly they cannot hear themselves or each other think. It’s not over.”

It tends to make a lot of good people despondent and at the least susceptible, when they read, watch and listen to the maverick storm of media ads, thumping down President Obama’s health care initiative?  Much of the rambling artifacts are the Simon and Lois ads of the Clinton administration, heavily armed against any revisions in this issue that wealthy insurance companies and subsidiaries won’t tolerate.

They insulted the senior citizens with their propaganda and bald faced lies about the European government run health care system. Being originally an Englishman myself, I guarantee in the 1960’s, we had a unique form of medical services, inclusive of eye and teeth.  It did plummet down somewhat, when business starting recruiting foreign labor from the commonwealth and Northern Europe. Many were out for a free financial ride and got it, along with their large families that British citizens have to support with their limited pounds sterling.

Just as the anti-governmental health care extremists have been pounding the airwaves, the open border, globalist is now subjecting the American people to a torrent of inflaming immigration polls. But like all polls they can be intentional manipulated, in exactly how the questions are worded? Sure they can keep their co-pays, deductibles and pre-existing small-print clauses, squeezing every penny from a hurting economy, but tell the—BLOODY TRUTH!

It’s a sad fact that you cannot trust the Liberal slant regarding this searing problem, although not all Liberals are favorable to another AMNESTY?  The Democratic leadership, hiding liberal views behind closed drapes tried to annihilate any good, workable illegal immigration enforcement laws. In an earlier session of the Senate an error was made with E-Verify, so it’s was fortunate to survive Sen. Reid and Pelosi’s notion?  Anything that has an impact on removing illegal immigrants is intercepted by business oriented free traders.

GOOGLE—-illegal immigration—to find out their sinister intention, to just throw open the gates, ports and airline entrances to cheap labor, that also become the downfall of the European Union. the polling I have seen has been calculatedly—ENGINEERED—to get results, that they can brandish around, declaring the majority of Americans believe in a path to citizenship and open borders? Already the Democrats are ready to flag the Save Act, 287(g) local police enforcement to weaken these laws.

Currently both issues have heavy fallout, and you the voter should let your Senator or Representative know your opinion on either matter at 202-224-3121—-BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE. Both have massive consequences in costs and quality of life in your future and generations to come.WE MUST SAY NO AMNESTY! SEAL OUR BORDERS AND NO MORE FREEBIES TO ILLEGAL ALIENS. THEY ARE THE CRIMINALS, NOT AMERICANS WHO SACRIFICE TAXES? GOOGLE—NUMBERSUSA for details our government and the media have a nefarious talent, for keeping facts under wraps?
