Palestine In Two Years’ Time?Posted on Jun 23, 2009
Palestinian Authority PM Salam Fayyad set the date for creation of a Palestinian state at two years “at most,” with East Jerusalem as its capital. Meantime, Israeli protesters blocked aid and food from entering Gaza to demand the release of an Israeli soldier captured three years ago.

Howard and Earl, thanks for the comments. Facts about the situation are rarely offered on this site.

The Red Cross can see all the terrorists in Israeli prisons. Always have been able to .
Schalit is a kidnapped soldier and Red cross has not been permitted to see him ever; as he is being held in gaza for the past 3 years.
Hamas refuses to trade/exchange him for prisoners in Israel.

I live in Israel and my family has been here for sixty years. Fist, this is 2009 and the leaders of all parties involved represent the present. Second, all Palestinians do not hate Israelis, as 25% of pre-1967 Israelis are Palestinians! Third, recent polls on both sides of the border showed that 80% of all citizens support a two state settlement! Dwelling on the past and misrepresenting the present gives hope to extremists on sides that they can win. Most Israelis do not want Gaza and The West Bank. Check the latest polls on the internet. Do not give Hamas and the extreme right in Israel fuel for their fires. The 1947 partitiion plan is law!

The Israelis are not interested in any kind of Palestinian state…whether it’s one state or two.
The talk on the part of the Israeli politicians is just that…talk.
They are engaging in a holding action which will continue on indefinitely until the outside world forces Israel to address its inequities and injustices.

Simply astounding. Jewish protesters demand the release of one captured soldier but they refuse to release the thosands of Palestinians that have been held in Isreali prisons for years without charges, access to attorneys or visits by their families. In most cases the Isreali government refuses to even acknowledge that familyt members are being held. They also deny the Red Cross access to these prisoners because they don’t exist. The Jews have morphed into their opressors and they can’t understand why Palestinians hate them. Jews think that their lives are oh so much more important than anyone elses.

sharonsj, I think Fayyad believes it’s important for the Palestinians to have one government, which would make it possible to negotiate with Israel’s government. (Not that the Israelis are all in agreement—but they do have one person representing the country.)

Now I’m completely confused. When Netanyahu agreed to talks about a Palestinian state, without pre-conditions, the Palestinians condemned him. Now the Palestinians are talking about a state in two years. How is there going to be one without coming to an agreement with the Israelis…whom they apparently don’t want to speak to? After 60 years of non-agreements, why should things be any different in two years?
