Top GOP Senator Threatens High Court Filibuster

Jon Kyl

President Obama has said he wants to nominate someone to the Supreme Court capable of “understanding and identifying with people’s hopes and struggles.” That’s just too much for Senate Republican Whip Jon Kyl, who has threatened to filibuster if Obama appoints anyone more empathetic than your garden variety liberal.

AP via Google:

Obama also has said he wants someone who employs empathy, “understanding and identifying with people’s hopes and struggles,” when arriving at decisions that could influence the nation for decades.

That approach drew a rebuke Sunday from Kyl, who in January told the conservative Federalist Society that he reserved the right to filibuster.

“I went on to say a lot of things about what I meant by that, and I was distinguishing between a person who is just liberal — and undoubtedly this nominee will be liberal — and one who decides cases not based upon the law or the merits but, rather, upon his or her emotions, or feelings or preconceived ideas. That would be a circumstance in which I could not support the nominee,” Kyl said.

“You expect the brainless, spineless and ball-less Democrats in the Senate to do THAT?  Waddaryoo, nutz?”

No, I’m quite sane.  I threw the idea out merely in wonderment as to why nobody else had…

I don’t expect much from the Dems anymore.  I’ve come to learn that Liberals are gutless wimps, and that there is a great divide between a liberal and a progressive.  Worse, many liberals like to call themselves progressive.

I was a Kucinich supporter who reluctantly threw my support behind Obama.  His oratory got me rather worked up throughout February and March..  But, lately he has dissappointed me.

Instead of trying to pass Sotomayor off as someone who has ‘voted with conservatives 95% of the time,’  why doesn’t he just own his election and state outright that she is a liberal?  I don’t understand why a so-called liberal president who won as handily as he did has bent over so grotesquely backwards to placate the Rush Limbaugh following 20% of the population who regard Bush as a great president.

It’s alright to want to open dialogue.  It’s alright to want all sides represented in a national debate.  But this crap of pandering to the right wingers is quickly killing any enthusiasm I had for the man..

Kyl needs to have the IRS finetooth comb his financials…...America is sick of this grandstanding by Republicans who sold America down the river.
the VILE part is the corporate media playing “let’s pretend the 8 yrs of GW Bush never happened & reward Republicans for 8 yrs of stonewalling & deceiving America by saying the country would melt if investigations ATTEMPT to learn the TRUTH.”
now they go along w/delusions that the minority party dictate to over 80% of the American people. stupid & dishonest. They’re consistent.

Apparently Senator Kyl believes that Obama is about to appoint Paula Abdul for the Supreme Court?

It is actually pretty simple what Senator Kyl is trying to achieve. During eight years of Bush Jr. the republicans were unable to forge a permanent 5-4 voting majority on the court. Having watched Obama in action Kyl suspects that the president is a softie hence will give in and appoint at least another swing vote. Kyl knows that he cannot get a conservative justice.

Someone tell me who won the last national election.  Also did any one vote for compromise with these types?

Justices don’t come more “activist” than the Republican ones who appointed George W. Bush as president.

****************************************

You got that right!  And two of them lived it regret it, too!  Rehnquist and O’Connor both clearly wished they had decided otherwise.

That’s why Rehnquist died on the Court.  He clearly HATED Bush for interfering in Federal Court decisions, something he believed to his bones should ONLY be reviewed by the USSC.  And O’Connor, who simply detested Gore, found out that HER idea of “conservative” and Botch’s had NOTHING in common—she was NOT a supporter of the Botch policies too much.

Well, when the Democrats mentioned ‘filibuster’ over Roberts and Alito, the Republicans said they’d employ the ‘nuclear option.’

Let the Democrats do the same.

They absolutely should not allow the Republicans to thwart the nominee….

You expect the brainless, spineless and ball-less Democrats in the Senate to do THAT?  Waddaryoo, nutz?

I do NOT understand why Pelosi and Reid don’t crack the whip on wandering Dems AND CUT PROJECTS IN THEIR DISTRICTS AND STATES!  That’s how DeLay beat his Re-thugs into line—cut programs in districts that didn’t follow along. He did it to Dems too, so it should be done to Re-thugs.

Hell, Reward Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins for allowing an up-or-down vote and increase funding for Maine.

Enough of Blue states paying big bucks to support Red states who then treat ‘em like dirt.

But the Dims are like Charlie Brown and the Rethugs are like Lucy holding the football.  THIS time Dims think Lucy won’t pull the ball away.  This time…but she always does.

No matter the situation whether the dems have the majority in both houses or vice versa, the repubs will control the legislative process as I well remember the repub threat when they held the majority to use the ‘nuke’ option if the dems tried to filibuster. What a broken down piece of crap of a government we have and I guess this would certainly prove what makes ‘that little part’ that makes the difference in a dem or repub.

Of course, the ‘Grand Orgy Party’ will filibuster any candidate put forward by President Obama.
Did you or anyone think otherwise?  No candidate for the Supreme Court will pass the ‘muster’ of the GOP.
We are now faced with the obvious result of the people’s will, standing against that of the politicrats, those men and women, who have made it their livelihood to remain in power and have the prestige of a position in Washington.
It will come to a revolt, a true people’s revolt, that will remove those of the politicrats, which will not listen to the people and do listen to the lobbyists which are truly in control of our government.
We the people, the true government of this country, must stand against the powers that be, and let them know that if they do not, do as we wish, we will remove them by electoral means and give them the old heave-ho and replace them with people who will listen
to us, the true government of the US.
