Netanyahu Backs Settlement Expansion

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his cabinet he would not oppose the “natural growth” of settlements, saying, “There is no way that we are going to tell people not to have children or to force young people to move away from their families.” Israeli settlements are widely seen as a hindrance to the peace process.

BBC:

“I have no intention to construct new settlements, but it makes no sense to ask us not to answer to the needs of natural growth and to stop all construction,” a senior official quoted Mr Netanyahu as telling the Israeli cabinet.

“There is no way that we are going to tell people not to have children or to force young people to move away from their families,” he added.

The last one is also an intersteing offer from the Palestinina authority.  That the settlers are free to remain in a Palestinian state, so long as they are prepared to live under the authorty of a Palestinian government.

Not a bad idea, as it would mean no dismantlements of the settlements.  Of course, the settlers, who tend to be the most extreme, wouldn’t stand for it.

This will be the proof of the pudding, won’t it?
**********************************************

Actually, I’ve proposed the same plan here at T/D.  If they INSIST on staying in the settlements, then they will come under the authority of the Palestinian state, as ANY immigrants in ANY country do.

Yeah, it will be the proof of the pudding.  They resist being moved out violently, then let them stay, but they’ll be outside of Israel and Israeli Law.

Maybe, like the Moslems in Britain, they’ll demand to be able to rule themselves by their religious law, for them,Talmudic Law, a la the demands for Sharia in England…...  See how far THAT gets!

Inherit The Wind,

We have surely agreed on this issue before.  The settlements are a liability for all parties concerned.

I am confident that, unlike Bush, Obama wants this so it will be a real test of US interests vs the power of the lobby and the resolve of Netenyahu and the settlers movement.

Philli Weiss has come interesting articles in his blog.

One suggests observes that the Palestinians in Jerusalmen are turning the tables on the settlers by moving into the settlemtns neighborhoods.  That would be an interesting development.

The other is that by prolonging the 2 state solution, Israel may force the outcome of a single state solution.

The last one is also an intersteing offer from the Palestinina authority.  That the settlers are free to remain in a Palestinian state, so long as they are prepared to live under the authorty of a Palestinian government.

Obama just said No again. One remains heartened.

“Increasingly fractious relations between the US and Israel hit a low unseen in nearly two decades yesterday after the Jewish state rejected President Obama’s demand for an end to settlement construction in the West Bank, and the president responded by suggesting that Israeli intransigence endangers America’s security.

  and

“Robert Malley, former special assistant for Arab-Israeli affairs to Clinton, said: “The surprise in this is not the Israeli position. The surprise the forcefulness of the American one. Rarely have we seen it at this pace and with this intensity and unambiguity. The US has taken a position that doesn’t give much wriggle room at all to the Israeli government.”

If OBAMA were sincere about a two state solution, the settlers would be gone.  And who knows, that may not even be necessary if Hamas gains real power in a real state.  Just as there is an Arab minority in an Israeli state, it is conceivable there could be a Jewish (but not Zionist) minority remaining in a Palistinian state.  With the Palestinians developing an economy they control subsidized by the US and the West.

But this could only be done if the American and Western peoples put pressure on the US and Israeli power systems to effect real justice.  To what extent this is possible or not I don’t know.  South Africa eliminatied an apartheid power system only by adopting a neoliberal economy favoring White power.  This is an insufficient step forward.  Real power involves economic power, but could this involve the remains of a Jewish minority, and an integrated economic system?  I don’t know.  It certainly depends on the larger powers.

If Israel were in any way sincere about a two-state solution, the settlers would be gone in a flash. By ensuring permanent colonization of areas and infrastructure within the West Bank the Israelis are proving, once again, that they will keep bulldozing Palestinian homes and building Jewish colonies in a quest for a Greater Zion no matter what.

I get the feeling that Netenyahu us acting either out of desperation or arrogance.

Arrogant it the belief that no US president will have the spine to stand up to Israel.

Desperation that Israel has little time left before it has to agree to a Palestinian state, therefore desperate to secure key regions of the West Bank so that those settlements become immovable.

Not good, inherit, but better.  Non-support is not enough, opposition is necessary. To put pressure on the Israeli government the US has to threaten to cut off funds, boycott, etc.  Unless Israel can be bullied into a reasonable position, it will not survive two decades.
*******************************************

Your usual chainsaw rather than a scalpel approach.

However, I actually agree with the principle.  It’s perfectly consistent that I would. My “vision” (I hate that word) for Israel’s peace with her neighbors cannot happen if the Yahoo has his way.  I thought I made that clear many times.

Obama MUST get serious with What-a-Yahoo and make it clear that non-compliance will result in PAINFUL penalties—and make them stick!  Otherwise, Yahoo is leading THEM down the same slippery slope Bush was leading us down that was somewhat slowed down in Nov. 2006.

If Israel is to survive and not have the world on its throat, it MUST not let the Yahoos go on with the religious vision.  ‘Cuz unless God comes down from Heaven and smites Israel’s enemies with phaser beams from the Ark of the Covenant, nobody but Orthodox Jews truly buys the “Chosen People” as anything more than a slogan.

Diplomacy must be and is the only answer.  And if Obama needs to put Yahoo in a diplomatic hammerlock to do it, so be it.

Seeing Sharon and Kadima as moderate is like seeing Arlen Specter and John McCain as moderate—a fantasy assessment.  I just think Livni is more of a realist and pragmatist than the neo-con-like clones in Netanyahu’s and Lieberman’s parties.

Obama Must Cow Netanyahu, Not the Other Way Around

Obama-Netanyahu must not be Kennedy-Khrushchev

By Juan Cole

May 18, 2009 “ICH”—-” Far rightwing Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is meeting Monday with President Barack Obama in Washington.

It is the most fateful encounter of two world leaders since Kennedy met Khrushchev. And Obama absolutely must not allow himself to be cowed or misunderstood as timid by Netanyahu, who is a notorious bully and warmonger. (Bill Clinton complained that Netanyahu when last prime minister thought that he was the superpower). If Obama can cow Netanyahu, his Middle East policy may have a chance. If Netanyahu comes away thinking he can thumb his nose at Washington, the whole Middle East could be in flames by the end of Obama’s first term.

The two come to the encounter with starkly different agendas for the Middle East. Obama wants better relations with Iran (which he needs for a clean withdrawal from Iraq and for success in Afghanistan). And Obama wants to be the president who finally established a Palestinian state, implemented a two-state solution, and resolved the long-running Arab-Israeli conflict, which has generated so many wars and so much terrorism and instability. (As I have said before, the key problem in all this is Palestinian statelessness.)

Netanyahu on the other hand wants to attack Iran and attempt to destroy its nuclear enrichment research facilities. And he absolutely does not under any circumstances want a Palestinian state or to be forced to withdraw Israeli squatters from the Palestinian territories that they have been colonizing since 1967 (unlike most of Israel proper, the UN never awarded that territory to Israel, nor has it been recognized implicitly by international treaties, as Egypt’s Camp David accords implicitly recognized 1949 Israeli borders.)

Obama, concerned that Israeli sabre-rattling might itself lead to hostilities, sent CIA head Leon Panetta to Israel recently to demand that the Netanyahu government tone down its belligerent rhetoric. Netanyahu maintains that Iran has vowed to destroy Israel, which is not correct. The Iranian government is hostile to Israel and wishes that the Zionist enterprise would collapse the way the Soviet Union or the shah’s government did. But it has said that it would accept a two-state solution if that was what the Palestinians wanted. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad never threatened to ‘wipe Israel off the face of the map,’ since there is not even such an idiom in Persian. He was talking about an ideological collapse of a Zionist regime and its occupation of Jerusalem, Islam’s third holiest city. Iran has not launched an aggressive war possibly since Karim Khan Zand took Basra in the 1780s.

Netanyahu’s plan to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities would fail, and would only cause Iran actually to seek nukes, which it is not presently doing according to US intelligence. I like Israelis, but they are understandably traumatized by all the things that have happened to them since the 1930s and have developed an unhealthy hysteria and tendency to shoot first and ask questions later. They were convinced that a US overthrow of Saddam Hussein would change the Middle East in their favor. It has not (Hizbullah in Lebanon has new friends in Baghdad, as does Tehran). Obama must impress on them that the answer to every problem is not a bombing raid. The good thing about having Rahm Emmanuel in the White House is that he will be able to phrase the instruction colorfully enough for it to be understood unambiguously.”

ALL of Israel’s political leaders support incresing the settlements, and ethnic cleansing Palestinians to do it.  And even Uri Averny, an old man, has given in to wish fullfillment and hopes and believes that Obama will stop it. He won’t.  Israel was increasing settlements while Obama was talking to Yahu.

Israel makes a pretense of tearing down an outpost and then withdraws while the settlers rebuilds it.  The melencholy truth of the matter is that the Israeli-American power leaders are all for ethnic cleansing and the only solution for the Palestians is military-poltical resistence. This can lead to either a one state or two state solution.  Or. and in addition to,  a massacre of the Palestians or an Isareli nuclear attack on a Muslim country.

As the US loses world power and Isreal becomes more isolated over historical time, and the Muslim countries throw of their Western puppets, the power position of hte Palesitinians will improve, but through enormous Palestinian suffering adn US-Israeli barbarity.

But don’t talk shit and threaten our Public Servants to endanger US any further in the name of your own self interests or cowardice.

So here’s the latest Zionist genius about the so-called “natural growth” of the Israeli-planted 60 year-old cancer, so-called “settlement,” but in reality it’s called stealing, disposition and perpetuating a terrorist occupation. Hereafter, I will refer to this as the “Z-Mentality” and to the Zionist trolls as “Z-Gang.”

Parallel to this “Z-Mentality” there was another piece of fresh news today about another Zionist economic terrorism operation. Remember the story of Bernard Madoff?! Well Today on MSNBC’s Dateline Program, there was another Z-Mentality story about a certain Sam Israel, who for years ran a Hedge Fund sham like the one run by the Zionist Jewish Madoff. He was caught and sentenced to 20-years in prison. Before he was to report to prison, he faked his own suicide, thus committing a double crime! However, relative justice finally caught up with him and he is now in prison, though I believe he should be hanged for the many lives he had ruined and stole from.

Because I am just reporting the facts and adding my deep-penetrating analysis to these news, I am sure to be the target of attack by the Z-Gang, who roam these TD threads anxious to spot my name and go on accusing me of “hatred” and “childish thinking” among other derogatory language.

Like the many previous attacks by the Z-Gang, I will bear these attacks as a badge of honor, testifying to my warrior spirit in the way of TRUTH!

Is this what what freedom and democracy is all about? We all will be better off without such freedom and democracy.
