Apple Goes to War

The military has been deploying Apple’s iPod Touch and iPhone, loaded with software that aids in translation, intelligence gathering and shooting people. Military iPods will “display aerial video from drones and have teleconferences with intelligence agents halfway across the globe.” We civilians are still waiting for copy and paste.

Newsweek via Engadget:

Since sharing data is particularly important in counterinsurgency operations, the Pentagon is funding technology that makes it easier for the soldier on the ground to acquire information and quickly add it to databases. Next Wave Systems in Indiana, is expected to release iPhone software that would enable a soldier to snap a picture of a street sign and, in a few moments, receive intelligence uploaded by other soldiers (the information would be linked by the words on the street sign). This could include information about local water quality or the name and photograph of a local insurgent sympathizer. The U.S. Marine Corps is funding an application for Apple devices that would allow soldiers to upload photographs of detained suspects, along with written reports, into a biometric database. The software could match faces, making it easier to track suspects after they’re released.

Apple gadgets are proving to be surprisingly versatile. Software developers and the U.S. Department of Defense are developing military software for iPods that enables soldiers to display aerial video from drones and have teleconferences with intelligence agents halfway across the globe. Snipers in Iraq and Afghanistan now use a “ballistics calculator” called BulletFlight, made by the Florida firm Knight’s Armament for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Army researchers are developing applications to turn an iPod into a remote control for a bomb-disposal robot (tilting the iPod steers the robot). In Sudan, American military observers are using iPods to learn the appropriate etiquette for interacting with tribal leaders.

It was from Nick Turse where I first encountered the phrase “military-industrial-entertainment-complex”, which seems appropriate here. There seems an insatiable desire to transform technological advances, in order to serve nefarious purposes. Popular video games are not only money makers, but very effective recruitment tools. Call in an air strike, via the cell phone, is of course already happening.

Sure! Give it to those inclined towards depravity, who weaponize each and every thought that bubbles to the surface of those tiny gray cells.

Thanks…..Steve Jobs!

When money is valorized, the work certainly is degraded!

THE GREAT WAR TO LEAVE NO MILITARY CONTRACTOR BEHIND

IPHONE - PSYCHO IS AS PSYCHO DOES
The army has been actively recruiting felons, gang members and racists (future Tim McVeighs?) in the absence of any non-make-believe reason for their War To Leave No Military Contractor Behind.

AFGHAN WAR ON WEDDING PARTIES
That, with the fact that many do not have even a high school diploma, makes one wonder if the result of giving them iPhones will just be the Afghan War on Wedding Parties on steroids.

It has already been reported that teenagers in the military who have never left the US—trained at the Defence Language School in Monterey, CA—were used to listen in on satellite phone calls from the region and decide who to drop bombs and missiles on, based on dialects of the local languages that they couldn’t understand. Yet another Neocon fubar snafu. One of so many.

With care and consideration like that is it any wonder that Afghan civilians have come to support the Taliban and that Europe refuses to send combat troops?

The US’s Neocon stooge—French poodle Sarkozy came up with a few hundred more police, purely to train the Afghan police. And he was the bright spot in the US’s utter failure to in get the European suckers to line up more of their men and women to be killed for the Great War to Leave No Military Contractor Behind.

It used to be said that the function of the UK’s contribution to the US’s War in Iraq was to provide dead bodies to make the sacrifice a shared one. It seems that the soldiers became tired of that trick. And the British government has been forced to decide to withdraw their ‘suckers’. Much to the relief of the ‘common soldiery.’

More dead people brought to you by ‘Biggus Dickus’ (Cheney). Five deferments. Why didn’t you serve? “I had other plans.” Plans just like the 4,000 US servicemen and woman and the 1.4 million Iraqi children, women and men. Who can’t tell us _their_ plans. Because they are unfortunately now dead.

Gee. Thanks Neocons.
