Obama Wants a Nuke-Free WorldPosted on Apr 5, 2009
The U.S. led a round of chest-thumping following North Korea’s alleged missile test Sunday, but President Obama also acknowledged that the United States is the only country to have used nuclear weapons against others and, as such, has a “moral responsibility” to lead the world toward a nuclear stockpile of zero.

samosamo: Moronic post.
jackpine savage: Do you even know what depleted uranium is? Also, the cold war ended 20 years ago. There are enough rich people in Russia today to make absolutely sure that we don’t get into a nuclear war.
voice of truth: Thank you!

You are obviously sincere, Jackpine. But in class-based power systems, the emphasis is on power delusions and perception management.
What Obama, and the US power structure, want is for the US and Israel to have nuclear weapons, and everybody else not. Since the US has invaded those countries that don’t have them, and Obama is continuing hte War on Terrorism while eliminating its rhetoric, the US is increasing the spread of nuclear weapons under the guise of preventing it.
As a qauestion in Turkey suggested, Obama is continuing Bushite policy under the guise of Hope n Change.

Folktruther,
I should have been more clear. I think that it’s a good idea; however, how i would approach the idea is probably a lot different than how Obama will approach the idea.
He’ll end up bargaining (with the ABM shield as a chip, for example) when he should drop the ABM shield altogether and then unilaterally disarm to a few hundred warheads…which is more than enough to defend the US…at that point he tells the world that the rest will go just as soon as everyone else’s are gone and we all sign a piece of paper saying we’re done with them.
His speech was good enough so that it sounds like he means when he may well not (who the f%ck knows with that guy). I fear, of course, that he’ll try to get everyone else to give them up with the promise that we will when they will.
I’m lucky enough to have contact with some serious nonproliferation people who see real positives…though i won’t go so far as to say that they are not seeing what they want to see.

Why is the president apologizing to the European community? Was he voted to be a community organizer or to be the president of the US? I’m tired of hearing him say almost treasonous rants about our country. We are the last superpower and the Europeans want nothing more than to cut us down to their level. And OUR OWN president is over there doing exactly what they want.

Jackpine- If you consider this a good speech despite being toothless and a diversion, how about ‘dangerous.’ Obama slipped in that he is planning on going forward with the first strike missile defense against Russia, aremed with nuclear missiles.
This emplacing of missiles makes a first strike attack on Russia more credible. This exact opposite of decreasing the threat of nuclear attack.

“Obama wants a Nuke-Free world”
And I want a Porsche (preferably 911S RUF twin turbo cabriolet, any color) to materialize in my driveway. Even a person on welfare has a better chance of achieving my “dream”.

This story is not even worth the time it took to write. If Obama really thinks that the world will / can become nuke free, then he is lucky that breathing is an automatic function, elsewise he would suffocate right in front of us from outright stupidity.
Oh yeah, and the red-herring of the US being the only country to use such a weapon, blah blah. It’s real easy to second guess people from 65 years ago. If the US had to invade Japan in 1945, which is surely would have, a lot of us wouldn’t be here right now, because our grandfathers would have died.

This is all very dangerous. Obama’s intentions notwithstanding, see this article about “antinuclear nuclearism” and the new US foreign policy;
http://www.fpif.org/fpiftxt/5782
Obama’s speech yesterday is fully in line with this dangerous program.

I say that it’s a good speech, but i will not deny the possibility of it being A. a diversion and B. toothless.
Let’s hear about abandoning the stupid ABM program. Let’s hear how the US will no longer use depleted uranium munitions (not that we haven’t already “dirty-bombed” large portions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Let’s hear that the US is relinquishing its “right” to a nuclear first strike.
And let’s see the first step of unilateral nuclear disarmament, down to the most minimum retaliatory capability.
Those are the first steps to a nuke free world, and they must be taken in and by the United States.

President Obama’s toothless rhetoric has become very tiresome. The others posting on this thread are correct: how long is Truthdig going to kid itself?

Diversion, Yep! I want a job, I want those responsible for the financial terrorist attack that was done to this country investigated and prosecuted. I want the media monopoly broken up and my and your broadband the corporations stole from us, put back in our hands and redistributed. Not only that, those corporations are advertizing that now, for $20 month, a person can have the fastest broadband in their home. And I want those 1st amendment rights that are for the citizens given back to JUST the citizens. I want corporations and lobbyists regulated, transparent and scrutinized. Matter of fact, lobbyist should be illegal as it is out and out bribery. I want 9/11 investigated and those here in the US tried and punished. Bunch of terrorists in a cave making thermite and thermate and wide open access to all 3 buildings to set them for demolition, what a crock.

The pledge to fight nuclear weapons is a diversion from the act most dangerous to leading to a major nuclear war, the missile defense system US is putting into POland and Checho. Obama is continuing the political insanity of Bush, increasing nuclear tension with Russia. Under the absurd guise that this first strike missile capiblity is intended to deter Iran.
And truthdig and other pseudo-progessive media legitimate this insane provocation.
