Red-light capital?: This photo showcases the famous Mormon Tabernacle organ in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Where in this great nation would you think the per capita consumption of pornography would be at its highest? Perhaps a decadent coastal blue state such as California or New York? Guess again, people—the answer is Utah.

The Salt Lake Tribune:

Besides its political bent, Utah’s per capita appetite for online pornography makes it the nation’s run-away red-light state.

A study by a Harvard Business School professor shows that Utah outpaces the more conservative states—which all tend to purchase more Internet porn than other states.

Online porn subscription rates are higher in states that enacted conservative legislation banning same-sex marriage or civil unions and where surveys show support for conservative positions on religion, gender roles and sexuality, according to an analysis published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives.

The Beehive State briefly experimented with a state-funded porn czar until 2003. The study examining online porn usage from 2006 to 2008 shows those efforts apparently failed.
Utah has the nation’s highest online porn subscription rate per thousand home broadband users, at 5.47, while the nearby states of Idaho and Montana showed the lowest rates of 1.98 and 1.92, respectively, according to the study.

ABC News sheds further light on trends in conservatives’ consumption of pornography across the country:

ABC News:

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

“Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by,” Edelman says.

You know, as an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it sickens me to see how hypocritical some of my fellow Mormons can be. I understand why people are quite put off by our religious beliefs. After all, even Joseph Smith himself said that “we are a peculiar people.”

The thing is that it is a beautiful religion that offers hope and happiness that I have found to be second-to-none in my personal experience. However, the backward jackasses who claim to “practice” the faith while rushing home with a full container of Jorgens and fresh box of Kleenex shed a horrific light on Mormon people as a whole.

I’m not going to sit here and preach about how “good” Mormon people are, because obviously there are many out there who aren’t as devout as they proclaim to be. I just ask that you don’t believe that all Mormon people around the globe are as corrupt as those 5.47 per thousand in Utah.

All of a sudden those Mormon Tabernacle spires are looking rather phallic, aren’t they? And that entrance door ... .

I guess this Utah porn use might show that some conservativism is related to some sexual repression. And this is surprising news because ... ?

French philosopher and scholar of the obscene George Bataille wrote extensively about transgression as a primal erotic force. The porn penchant in the Mormon state may seem counter-intuitive, until you bring the mechanism of transgression into the mix. According to Bataille, primitive taboo is sublimated into the rules of civilization. More rules mean greater opportunities for transgression, and the forbidden holds the greatest erotic allure of all. In the language of the controlled violence of transgression, the more ordered the society, the more ritualized disorder the individual craves.

I love it! I’ve lived in Utah now for almost 8 years…right downtown SLC even - SIX BLOCKS FROM THE MO-MO TEMPLE! I’m not at all surprised by this survey! - You know, as a transplant to Utah from Atlanta, it’s as I tell people back home - Utah represents what America wanted back in the 50’s; Leave it to Beaver all grown up, White people [ aka Mormons] have the final say in any decision, women are second class citizens and any child that sees an alcoholic drink will be an alcoholic when they grow up. This is an easy place to live because everybody has their heads so far in the sand. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard a person not sure how to make a decision about something say, “I will have to ask my [mormon] Bishop before I decide”. ...And the meek shall inherit the porn…

Fundamentalism of any color, Morman, Baptist, etc. is not about religion, or God, but is about power of the “elite”, in these cases men’s power.  Not all men, but those who are “chosen” by the churches, who display the correct attitude.  (There are a lot of young boys who are cast out of the polygamist Morman settlements so there will be enough girls to go around for the older ones in power.

The power is part of the porn.  The ones shown in those kind of pictures are always helpless and dominated in some way.  It is the “sweet power over anothers life” that they like.

These fundamentalists champion Right to Life, but that is NOT what they are interested in.  They don’t adopt any more than Blue State people ( - I would like to know the exact stats on that), nor do they care about the babies produced by these poor unmarried girls.  The real reason is that these girls have to be punished for having sex.  (“say Amen - hee hee).  Ah, not the boys mind you, just the girls.  After that baby is born the fundamentalists don’t have any use for it any more, except to see that the life of that girl is ruined.

I work in Oklahoma, another Red fundy state.  I know Utah, at least its backcountry, rather well, and they are just alike in attitude and repression.

Time to grow up and get away from all that.

One of many differences between so called conservatives and liberals is conservatives just can’t seem to get out of the closet and admit they are human. The do as I say and not as I do is soooo 80’s.

bogglesthemind,

that quote is a myth. Jefferson never penned or said that…

several of his quotes have been mangled. For example, he did say “I do not find in orthodox Christianity one redeeming feature.” Orthodox being the subject.

Jefferson also stated “I am a real Christian.”

This is not new. As Jefferson himself noted, “So many persons have of late found an interest or a passion gratified by imputing to me sayings and writings which I never said or wrote…”

Mormons are one giant sex cult and have always been sex addicts. Whats new here?

They have tried to get away from their polygamist past but it is well and alive. Just look at all the cults they created that follow the “old” way.

Ever wonder what they really do when they “inspect” a potential bride behind closed doors???

Mormons are pervs for sure.

Utah is America’s first and foremost theocratic den of perversion. Orrin Hatch, Chris Buttars, Gayle ‘bulldog’ Ruzicka, and one could compile a lengthy list of the sexually bizarre and religiously intolerant. Utah is the “fundamental” home of the smarmy Mitt Romney.
It’s the religion kids and the stranglehold the Mormon Church has on everything. From Utah State government to education to the social structure of the State. Mormons will profess their undying sanctimonious ways and means are to everyone’s benefit however, the practical application of their ‘ways and means’ produce the Mormons absolute delight in porn, pedophilia, racist politicians, plural marriage (which is sacrosanct), and political repression.
Utah abhors being cast in the light of public scrutiny. It shows off the “ickies” hanging around. The very best thing that America could do for Utah, is to boycott everything Utah. Sundance, the ski industry, anything Osmond, Coca Cola, and of course Zion’s National Park. Hey Outdoor Retailers, how much of your market share is from the Gay and Lesbian community?
If the Mormons understand anything besides pornography, they understand money and the lack thereof will get the Mormon attention toot suite.
I do have some understanding of these “pressing” issues. I was born in Utah and I still live in Utah. Even if it’s on the scorned outskirts of the place and that is my beloved Gaza Strip, Utah/Nevada. TTFN

Gee, I’m a Liberal, and non-religious! That must explain why I don’t have a single subcription to any pronography publications, be it online or paper form!
I guess this means I have to move to the right and be born again so I can enjoy pronnography like the rest of those conservative religious types!
Hey hey!

When you drive through red-state Texas, you will notice that one exit features a gigantic megachurch. Then, the next exit features a gigantic mega-porncenter. Then the next exit will feature a fifty foot tall statue of Jesus. Then the next will be another mega-porncenter.

It’s all very interesting, psychologically.

LOL.

Article quote: “States where a majority of residents agreed with the statement “I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage,” bought 3.6 more subscriptions per thousand people than states where a majority disagreed. A similar difference emerged for the statement “AIDS might be God’s punishment for immoral sexual behaviour.”

“One natural hypothesis is something like repression: if you’re told you can’t have this, then you want it more,” Edelman says.”  (I’d say…NOT. Cause, ya’ see….. oh, I’ll let you figure that out)

True to course, it is what it is.  LOL.

Yep, maybe they should “update” the adage in Montana (and those there parts) regarding sheep.  You know the one where they call sheep Montana whores…. Looks like they more rightly should be deemed, UTAH WHORES, but five el’ get ya ten says they’re specifically MORMON WHORES…. LOL.

How funny is that…?

Maybe it’s just me… could be…. probably was… and of course…must be… BUT….. have you ever dated one of the “fold”, wow.. things get interesting (read bizarre) real quick.  And you’re left wondering what SCRIPTURE was that…?!  I better start crackin’ open that bible… cause…whoa there, I seemed to have MISSED something…. yep..that’s me… always the “black sheep”.

Truth be told (being a “black sheep” an’ all), I also “dated” the potheads, and ah…ah..ah.. they we wonderful, normal, and ah..ah…ah.. great.  So….. what’s the lesson here?

~~~
Of course. Porn satisfies a need when you live in a state of denial. And Utah is THE State of Denial!
A few decades back, I attended the wedding of a gay friend in Utah. One of the comments most commonly heard was most folks there simply believe Utah has an unusually high percentage of eligible bachelors. Lost on most is the reality that there’s usually just one Master bedroom in their homes. But that was more than twenty years ago. Maybe things are improving some.
Or maybe not.
Maybe it’s the isolation in so many of those rural communities. And those long cold winter nights. wink
Naw, that cant be it since Idaho and Montana showing the lowest rates, have as much or more isolation, and longer, colder winter nights.
