N.Y. Post Apologizes for Monkey Business

The comic that started the outrage was published Wednesday by the New York Post.

In the face of angry protests outside its offices, the New York Post has apologized, with qualifications, for publishing a cartoon about the stimulus package showing a dead chimpanzee that many readers saw as representing President Obama. But in its half-hearted mea culpa, the Post made little direct reference to the racist stereotype that sparked the controversy in the first place.

Los Angeles Times:

After two days of protests, the New York Post apologized Thursday for a cartoon that some have interpreted as comparing President Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police.

The newspaper posted an editorial on its website Thursday evening saying the cartoon was meant to mock the federal economic stimulus bill, but “to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.”

The piece was posted hours after 200 picketers chanting “Boycott the Post! Shut it down!” marched in front of the paper’s office, saying the cartoon echoed racist stereotypes of blacks as monkeys.

it’s so true. i am an american of a certain age and thus wholly and necessarily conditioned to the rhetoric of abuse and violence.  i confess i am hyper-sensitive to gratuitously rotten behavior despite this thorough conditioning. still, in this addled state of sensitivity i endeavor not to compare my fellows to chimps if for no other reason than of deference to chimps.
to rate insensitivities by a comparison of eric holder with sean delonas is to invoke another sort of abusive rhetoric to which i am not yet enured. thank you for pointing that out.

Yes, there are bigger problems. The nYP is “being boycotted” by “liberal” media—now cmon! Who in the “liberal media” ever read the Post?? Of course there are Murdoch’s other holdings, some of which will be difficult to avoid.

We need the Fariness Doctrine to make Murdoch easier to avoid. Revoke his citizenship for all I care.He always was an asshole.

I think the underlying premise here is to “keep our heads” and also to NOT FORGET to “give credit where credit is due”.

By that, I mean…. don’t take this as indicative of EVERYONE, but by all means GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE”.  Kapeesh..?

The person who threw his shoes at outgoing “ole bullshit” has been held in jail and is on trial…..

Why hasn’t this “cartoonist” been arrested for “instigating” violence against our ELECTED PRESIDENT????

I think everyone needs to take a few steps away form the cartoon and focus on the bigger issues in our society today. Lets get outraged about the mortgage meltdowns and the failure of the banking system. We spend to much time getting worked up about cartoons and not enough time being outraged about the failure of our government

Robert;

Those that let the media divide,or the government divide are truly conditioned to the rhetoric of this civilization, one of true abusive violence. The over sensitive perception that these comments, whether from Ruppurt Mungdock, or the corrupt minions of the administration simply mean nothing to any one who see’s each as an individual human being.

Message from Obamists:

Toe the party line of garnet the consequences.

ANYONE who believes this cartoon is “over the line” should check out the history of political cartoons at least since John Adams.

Personally don’t agree with the post. I think the Connecticut chimp could have written a bill better than the one Obama signed!

“No more racist than the present attorney general, and all us cowards that live here” oh, slightly.
whether one cares or does not care about this cartoon only a fool claims confusion about its racist intent.
your blithe dismissal of this country’s salient paradox is exactly the cowardice of which ag holder speaks. it is more legitimate for one to be racist than to be racist and deny it.
only a coward pretends not to understand the enduring legacy of this nation’s moral crimes.

If you wanted to make the point that the stimulus package was designed by (a) chimp(s), this was NOT the way to do it.

“Sorry you Feel that way” is NOT an apology for insinuating assassination
Racist reference towards Obama- absolutely
Violence toward Women if directed towards Pelosi- No doubt
But far more Heinous is the justification of Political assassination- regardless who the chimp was to represent.
I’m not so offended by the Racism or masogeny- typical for Repugs and their Media lap dogs. By focusing on these standard ideological infractions of Decency,We allow these people to get away with the real intent to the cartoon- to eliminate the opposition through an act of violence.
Wasn’t that the intent during the campaign with ‘pals around with terrorist’ Rhetoric. Keyes Recent call to ‘Stop’ Obama a ‘Radical communist’ from dstroying our Country.
Are the Repugs so Desperate they are willing (or trying) to unleash the Unbalanced in their base. Lunatics who have a history of Violence as oppostion- bombing Womens Clinics, gunning down MD’s, Poisoning their followers (or setting them ablaze), Setting off pipe bombs at the Atlanta Olympics, Beating a man to near death and leaving him tied to a fence post, Dragging a Black man behind a pick up truck, and most recently opening fire in a Church because Savage ‘told him to’...Come on Lunatic Fringe describes not just their ideology but their methods when Called to action.
We won’t need a Commission to investigate who may have participated in an assassination- we have Video and print of the Incitement and therefore their complicity.
The Repugs know exactly the mental imbalance which thrives in their party- they use it everytime they speak. they realize these people don’t think for themselves, reason they can tell outrageous- easily dispelled- lies. Their Base Requires spoon feeding, have no curiosity of their own (Just like W)and it only takes the slightest suggestionn to set thir hair on fire. Not to mention their short attention span and forgetfulness makes them easy to recycle the same propaganda over & over (Keyes taking another run at Obama not born in the US)
The repugs have been working to ‘fire Up their base’- Literally playing with fire to do so- they should be held legally responsible for the reprecussions. They are not only ignoring the fact their base are impulsive and ignorant, but have loaded the gun and handed it to them.

Remember the controversial situation a few months ago where the Spanish Basketball team made slanty-eyed impressions of Asians?

If you’re unfamiliar with the event, you can read it here: http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/summer08/basketball/news/story?id=3532682

The OCA (representing Asians) stated disappointment, but almost everyone in voting polls said it wasn’t a big deal.

Some say the Asians were being too sensitive and that the Spaniards weren’t mocking them. But the very fact that the Spaniards were seen laughing as they did such impressions, implied that they found such looks ‘funny’ or ‘entertaining’. We’ve all been to elementary school, and such impressions were almost always made to insult or tease the poor Asian kid.

Now a similar situation happens to the African-American community (a much larger than the Asian community in the US), and it immediately causes an uproar. Because as we know, there are strength in numbers. The Black community has grown in numbers in the past few decades, so they have some form of political power. But other minorities don’t have that strength, so it is viewed that if we choose to mock them, there’s nothing they can do about it.

This very example proves the discrimination against minorities.

Re: MackTN

Your comment: “What does the connecticut chimp story have to do with a stimulus bill?

Note that no one has explained the themes that unite those 2 stories.”

This is a very GOOD point. Because upon seeing the cartoon here at Truthdig, I hadn’t heard the “Connecticut chimp” story…..at all.  So naturally, I saw the racist tone immediately…as I suspect RACISTS (unaware of the “Connecticut chimp”) did ALSO.

So I read some of the “Connecticut chimp” articles, and was curious as to exactly how the two themes could possibly be implied or intertwined or connected…., like you, I’m still wondering.

I believe that the cartoon depicts the shooting of law makers, who are being lampooned as animals.

We might wish to ask how far this suggestion of violence will go.

However if you were offended and complained they are glad you are offended. So this apology is a few tacos short of a combo. Hopefully the responsible editor and the cartoonist have a black star on the poster in Murdoch’s mind.
