And the Winner Is ... IcelandPosted on Feb 1, 2009
Hats off to the Scandinavians, who continue to make the world’s progressives green with envy. Even as Iceland faces economic catastrophe, the volcanic island nation has made history by naming the world’s first (for the most part) openly gay national leader. Johanna Sigurdardottir will become prime minister. (The New York Daily News says Norway briefly had an openly gay man as prime minister.) The family-values types can just relax. Sigurdardottir has been married to her female companion for seven years.

Must be pleasant to live in a country were pettiness is not paramount in politics. Wonder if Johanna Sigurdardottir wears a flag pin?

norway briefly had an openly gay man as prime minister?
in that case i think we should award this achievement to the norwegians, as johanna’s term is brief too, it will only last about 80 days, before the scheduled elections.
maybe her party wins big and she stays on after april, but until then icelanders have not made any more progressive history than our norwegian cousins.
all the best.

But now there is talk about incorporating Iceland into the EU as a solution to the banking collapse.
