Obama Will Rip Away the ‘Global Gag’Posted on Jan 23, 2009
In the next move of a partisan ping-pong game over women’s reproductive health, Obama is slated to reverse the despicable “global gag rule” that refuses U.S. aid to foreign health clinics that even mention the word that begins with an A. And sounds like “shma-shmortion.” It’s abortion.

Another progressive move for President Obama. He’s just slappin’ ‘em out, one after the other.
I LOVE it!
All of the comments too….
Shift, do you get the part about how some ‘life enhancing beliefs’ aren’t really ‘life enhancing’ at all? Like for instance when people have more children than they can afford to feed and/or otherwise nurture?
And then there’s that scarcity issue. Those who would indiscriminately (and selfishly) continue to populate the world don’t seem to consider these basics like food and water…the things that all living beings need to survive. There is NOT an infinite supply of either, and there is no Messiah just create the stuff out of nothing. (I know Jesus allegedly did it, but that’s a different deal).

Report thisi can’t believe you could commit such blatant racism on truthdig. for shame! I would be proud to be born in Zimbabwe, Sudan or Nigeria.i’m sure my mommy would be poor, but i’d belong to a fine culture and big extended family.
i must also remind you that troubles in Africa were all brought- and are still being brought- by western colonialists/multinationals

In the muslim countries and Gaza is one if all a woman is a womb and that is the only respect she gets she goes on to have ten children at the age of thirty-five and she still could have more.
The men will not use contracetives at all and abortion is denied a woman because “she is killing a soul” the woman responded “what about this soul”.
If this small square of real estate can only support so many people, unemployment is high, education is low, what are the people left to do but fight for more real estate.
Bush’s people fail to look at the world situation and soon the world will be in complete turmoil.
Thank God Obama is president, we could not go on any longer with a Republician administration and their narrow look at life.

godistwaddle, while I don’t disagree with your post…um…well, I don’t disagree…um…kind of a downer outlook though, no?
What anti-choice activists fail to acknowledge is that pro-choice doesn’t mean pro-abortion. I think Obama is right on with this issue: He wants abortion to be safe, legal, and available, but he’d like to work toward drastically reducing its frequency. Btw, you’ll notice I use the term “anti-choice” since I rarely find that “pro-lifers” have respect for life outside of the womb. They’re often pro-war, pro-poverty, pro-death penalty, etc.

The banning of all contraception and all abortions under any circumstances whatsoever is nothing more nor less than a war on the poor and by extension a war on all of us. As we know, extreme poverty makes people violent and desperate. The main reason the standard of living in the west has risen to where it has is because safe effective forms of contraception were invented. The main reason women have been able to get an education and work to provide for themselves and their children in the west has been access to contraception so that they could plan their families and only have as many children as they could afford. What right do we have to deny the undisputed benefits of safe, effective contraception - healthwise and economically- to the women of poorer countries? The religious bigots will say it’s a sin but that’s only because they think reason’s a sin in and of itself.

Excuse me, Shift, but my thinking goes like this: The reason “fully one third of all animals on Earth are now threatened with extinction,” is because there are fully six and a half billion human animals on Earth. An “immediate and comprehensive commitment to life affirming policies and actions” would be to drastically halt the reproduction of humans, not to continue to populate the Earth with more of them at the expense of a livable planet. Although, I’m certain that mother nature will soon address the human animal overpopulation problem in her own inimitable fashion.

Would that supporters of abortion bans were truly life affirming! In fact, the only lives they want to protect are those of the unborn. The death of pregnant women doesn’t seem to disturb them at all. Priests for Life even advocates against terminating an ectopic pregnancy, a near-certain death sentence for the pregnant woman, as well as other life-threatening pregnancies. In addition, anti-abortionists would ban almost all forms of birth control.
If the anti-abortion movement was not controlled by insane misogynists, pro and anti forces would have come to a workable compromise by now. Instead, anti-abortion groups merely work to keep their group in business by assuring that no compromise can be reached, at least not by anyone who values the life of a woman.

Any thinking fetus, were there such a thing, would cry out to be aborted rather than birthed in Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Sudan, or numerous other places, including, perhaps, a Republican dominated U.S.
Life is no gift. It is a stinking, treacherous game, and 99 men out of a thousand are bastards.

As an independent thinker I do depart from Progressive dogma on the issue of abortion.
In the larger picture a life sustaining belief system is necessary, in my view, to sustain human existence on earth. Human abortion is therefore a grave mistake that violates our commitment to a life sustaining value system. Fully one third of all animals on Earth are now threatened with extinction. Man is not an island and therefore the extinction of animal life will invariably lead to the extinction of man. In my opinion, nothing less that an immediate and comprehensive commitment to life affirming policies and actions will be enough to save ourselves. I fear that Progressives who fail to adopt life enhancing beliefs will by default render their other beliefs moot.
