British Foreign Secretary Criticizes ‘War on Terror’

David Miliband has written a sour review of the “war on terror,” challenging the worldview pushed by George W. Bush and Miliband’s former boss, Tony Blair. War is not the answer, Miliband warns. Instead, “We must respond to terrorism by championing the rule of law, not subordinating it. ... We must uphold our commitments to human rights and civil liberties at home and abroad.”

David Miliband in The Guardian:

We must respond to terrorism by championing the rule of law, not subordinating it, for it is the cornerstone of the democratic society. We must uphold our commitments to human rights and civil liberties at home and abroad. That is surely the lesson of Guantánamo and it is why we welcome President-elect Obama’s commitment to close it.

The call for a “war on terror” was a call to arms, an attempt to build solidarity for a fight against a single shared enemy. But the foundation for solidarity between peoples and nations should be based not on who we are against, but on the idea of who we are and the values we share. Terrorists succeed when they render countries fearful and vindictive; when they sow division and animosity; when they force countries to respond with violence and repression. The best response is to refuse to be cowed.

Shift, you suggest “... that the answer to this problem lies in an enormous transfer of wealth through radical tax policy whereby the selfish meddlesome power of the wealthy is reduced in favor of increases in the wealth of the poor and middle class thereby creating a better balance of power in America.

Lessening the power of corporate governance needs to be a central theme any new modified economic system.  Corporations and the wealthy have proven themselves unworthy of the trust and power given to them.  They have squandered it on greed and personal power.”

I think we should go further, and take advantage of the sudden shift to Socialism by the big boy Capitalists. Let’s nationalize any necessary industry, such as transportation, energy, health care, education, etc, and while we are at it [and to pay a few of the bills], any of the giant Agro-Industrial complexes and say businesses and corporations netting [or grossing?] more then 200 grand a year - something reasonable. Then all these criminals and thieves and murderers will be encouraged to emigrate - perhaps to the British Isles? like the big money guys did when the Castro Revolutionaries took power in Cuba.

That would allow the rest of us to start over and try to build a new society. We may luck out and get it right this time!

None of this was done in a vacuum!  The lessons that really should have been learned, should have been learned from the Hostage Crisis in 1979, America should have learned to stop propping up and backing dictators and tyrants!  It obviously has not!  The propaganda of “American Hegemony” was just as terrible as Imperialism, but of course if America does it, it can’t be wrong can it?  It is a lie, and more than that it implies that America is better than any other nation - based on what, military might!  Military might only gets you so far - for proof just look at Iraq!

This whole cabal just needs to be tried for Treason, High Crimes, and Misdemeanors against the American public, and against the world!

American economic elites and their dream of global economic domination and their aggressive actions to achieve it through the purchase of congressional votes and perpetual propaganda through the controlled American media, I believe, are responsible for the blowback of 9/11.  The attempt to impose their imperialist beliefs through the American military has failed along with their elite engineered unregulated economic system.

Now they are attempting to prop-up the old economic system that benefited them so exclusively.  They are using your money to prop it up.  They have spent us past the point of bankruptcy to prop themselves up.

I believe that the answer to this problem lies in an enormous transfer of wealth through radical tax policy whereby the selfish meddlesome power of the wealthy is reduced in favor of increases in the wealth of the poor and middle class thereby creating a better balance of power in America.

Lessening the power of corporate governance needs to be a central theme any new modified economic system.  Corporations and the wealthy have proven themselves unworthy of the trust and power given to them.  They have squandered it on greed and personal power.

This would align the American economic system more closely with the values espoused by David Milbrand among others.

I’ve been waiting for almost 8 years to hear these words spoken by David Miliband.  I just wish a U. S. leader had said them instead of a Brit.

The bus has arrived and Miliband wants to hog the front seat.  He’ll collect you tab as you get on.

What is it with these ‘world’ figures who apparently and suddenly ‘discover,’ foreinstance, that the war on terror is being conducted all wrong when the rest of us, lowly that we are, have known it for years.

Even George Will, a rancid reactionary if there ever was one, proclaimed publically in ‘06 that “the war on terror…is primarily an intelligence and law enforcement operation that requires cooperation around the world.”

From Wall Street’s ‘shock’ at our economic collapse, to the sudden ‘revelation’ that torture just may be a no-no, to the ‘sudden’ awakening to the fact that a 7 year war on terror is being waged all wrong - talk about a little slow on the uptake…

David Miliband’s comments are a fresh breath of air, though at the same time, they reflect how slow thinkers are many politicians.

I said it years ago, when the word “terrorism” became a buzzword to justify imperialist wars of aggression against the others who have different ideologies than the West, that acts of terrorism, whether practiced by individuals and groups, must be treated as crimes.

The worst aspect of the word “terrorism” is that it has been a cover and justification for state-sponsored terrorism against whole countries, such as the state-sponsored terrorism of the U.S. in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the ongoing state-sponsored terrorism of Israel in Gaza.

Fighting individual and group-sponsored terrorism require in the first place understanding the root causes of it and proceeding with wisdom and patience to removing its underlying causes.

I don’t know. Tony Blair is supposed to be teaching religion at Yale. He is a Christian and has his morals in place, has he not? And Bush, of course, is on a Crusade against the Infidels and has declared eternal war on terrorists. Also, Tony Blair is on a peace mission in Egypt, last I heard. The best torture that I can think of that could be used on Blair and Bush is having them swallow Anatoly Fomenko’s view of history.

The Bush admin has appeased the Terrorist doctrine for far too long. In fact the last 30 yrs has been an effort by US ‘leaders’ to increase recruitment into these groups. They and their Corp Masters have been aiding the oppressive regimes which not only create social inequity, but use US as their scapegoats.
One only needs to review what countries supplied the 9/11 attackers to figure out who is indoctrinating these mass murders into radical groups..Saudi’s. The Oil royals neglect & abuse their citizens, while pointing an accusatory finger at US.
Worse Yet is that the Israeli gov’t aids their ‘causes’ by living up to every indictment their leaders proclaim. Israel is endangering US every time they use excessive force to resolve some ‘sticks & stones ’ annoyance.Let’s all thank Israel, Bushco and the ‘Religious Right’ when we are attacked Again for their crimes against humanity.
But of course such Conspiratorial Gov’t actions serves Only their Multinational Corps agenda to increase profits and Control Humanity on a global level- Divide & Conquer.
Clear out gitmo of the ‘small fish’ and begin catching and killing the ‘Big fish’, Cheney should be the first new resident, then all his cohorts including the oil Royals - shieks and CEO’s. these are the ones who should be ‘renditioned’ and Waterboarded and then Hung by an inexperienced executioner.Oops Your neck didn’t break, guess you’ll just have to hang there awhile.Hamas,AQ et al don’t scare me as much as Halliburton,‘Armedgeddonists’ and the UAE.
