On Monday, the paper of record published an e-mail from the mayor of Paris slamming Caroline Kennedy’s political maneuvering as “appalling.” Unfortunately, the Times failed to check whether the message was authentic—it wasn’t. Guess that explains all those articles by Nigerian princes.

BBC:

The New York Times has said a letter purporting to be from the mayor of Paris that attacked Caroline Kennedy’s bid for a Senate seat was a fake.

The letter, which was signed with the name of Bertrand Delanoe and printed in Monday’s paper, called Ms Kennedy’s bid “not very democratic” and “appalling”.

The New York Times said it had failed to check whether the letter, which was sent by e-mail, was authentic.

OK, with the number of half-hearted source reviews, misquotes, and outright fabrications that the Times has put out in recent years…is anyone really surprised?  I get the fact that other news organizations might put this out there (I would imagine the Times was less than sanguine about running it as a headline), but is anyone really looking at this as newsworthy?

I’ve seen WAY too much bashing of Bush and the Repubs in the Times and in the blogs in general.  Folks, will everyone WAKE UP and realize that it will be no different under the Dems?  Or the Woolly Mammoth Party?  Or ANY party until we finally abolish the party system and look towards another system of getting the RIGHT candidates, instead of the most wealthy and connected?  Repubs bashed Clinton and Carter, Dems bash the Bushes and Reagan, and you know what?  They’re BOTH right, and we’re killing ourselves as a country as a result.  Look at immigration, the economy, renewable energy, the coming population crisis, water, our 21st century business model, health care…there are LOTS bigger problems than Dem and Repub.  The Times article simply illustrates the idiocy running rampant at the highest levels of BOTH parties.

As a paper that’s read worldwide how could you fail to do something as basic as fact-check? For shame, NYT.
