Mexican security forces have militarized much of the country in an effort to eradicate drug cartel power, with many Mexicans getting caught in the crossfire.

It’s been a creeping tragedy that has escaped serious attention by many major media outlets, but the recurring waves of drug violence in Mexico have taken the lives of about 5,000 people in 2008. In response, the Mexican government has deployed more than 40,000 troops, though corruption within the state’s security forces remains a grave problem.

The BBC:

The bodies of 13 people have been found on a dirt road in Mexico’s Sinaloa state, home to one of the country’s most violent drug cartels.

The victims’ hands were bound and all had been shot. Most were teenagers.

Passersby found the bodies near a stolen truck in the northwest of the state on Thursday.

It comes a day after a leading newspaper, El Universal, said that at least 5,000 people had been killed in drug-related violence this year.

The horrifying figure mentioned in the BBC report has been compounded in recent days by the escalation of seemingly random shootings in restaurants, movie theaters and pool halls, acts that are interpreted as scare tactics being used by the weakened Arellano Felix drug cartel in an attempt to send out a threat to rival gangs.

It should be noted that in 90% of such drug-related killings in Mexico, the firearms used come from the United States. The United States needs to acknowledge its co-responsibility in this problem, and take issue with the frightening laxism generated by the veneration of the Second Amendment. It is this laxism that enables the terrifying escalation of violence in Mexico.

I agree with most that has been said about the issue of the war on drugs except to say that, in-order for un-regulated Capitalsim to survive. The piranha’s that head the corporations that make up the Military Industrial Complex need wars,(real or contrived).

These are the very suits in Washington that are leading the War against Educating the U.S public at large and our children. The example that our Government sets is, that dishonesty is what keeps you at the trough and that is the simple yet biggest problem that we and the world face, and it has been through out history.

Until we the people demand that our Educational system teach the real history of the United States, as painfull as it is, and also to require the study of citizenship starting in the 3rd grade through High School, nothing will change; only the pigs wareing suits at the trough.

Dec. 5th is the 75th anniversary of prohibition. 75% of people today don’t believe the war on drugs works. 90% of people didn’t want the financial bail out. The people know !!!!
*****
Well said but the main thing not mentioned here is the conservative media ownership of 5 or 6 corporations that have for decades been training too many people not to know or care. That has worked to unbelievable levels to where there are still too many people that just turn on any of the msm stations for their information or should it be disinformation or none at all. Anyone with a computer, well, high speed connection helps, can go to InformationClearingHouse and in the left side column click on ‘Orwell Rolls in His Grave’ to view the video which to me is the best for grasping the media’s part in the subversion of our country.
And that is why we have politicans, to obfuscate the issues by not caring if we know or not. Elected people these days have, except for a very few, no concern about the people that elected them as they are mostly there and are being paid under the table to work for the ‘higher ups’ so it doesn’t matter if we ‘know’ or not. That is why this pretend war on drugs and the bailouts and every other thing that the people know are not good or the right thing to do get done anyway. Thus the fuzzy and vague wars on drugs and terror to maintain the perpetual war of nothing.

Calderon, supported by the US, lost the last election and was fraudulently installed as president.  He is now being supplied with military weapons by the US to help repress the population under the fraudulent War On Drugs.

The drug traffic is actually being largely conducted by corrupt police, military and political leaders under the guise of opposing it.  One of the major parties, the PRI,which supports Calderon,  has largely degenerated into a drug cartel.  John Ross, based in Mexico, who writes for Counterpunch among others, was one of the best reporters on drugs, but doesn’t do it so much any more.

‘Creeping’ just the kind of tactic our government uses for any money making venture. With all the hoopla about cash flowing to the drug cartels and their apparently uninterruppted business ventures, I would not hesitate to say that our government with the military’s help is helping this vast money making venture a continual thing at the expense of the people of the world; of the people in the countries where the drugs are produced and in the countries where they are consumed and both. And being a back door venture for the enrichment of the elite as usual the people lose out and pay for this false act of ‘protecting’ our country and other countries.
1twenty1 is correct, legalize the drugs and the crime and corrupt will be significantly redueced. Then the people that want to do drugs can and then die for the benefit of the people that want to care and live instead of having nothing else to live for and will not ever be able to have anything to live for. As humane as a way can be to depopulate the planet which is an elitist’s agenda anyway.

“It’s been a creeping tragedy that has escaped serious attention by many major media outlets, but the recurring waves of drug violence in Mexico have taken the lives of about 5,000 people in 2008.”

First, let me fix that for you.  It should read “...recurring waves of drug *prohibition* violence…”

You can throw all the troops and money you want at this problem, but it’s not going away until we take the massive profits out of the drug trade.  As long as there are massive untaxed profits to be made, this business will be run by powerful and violent organizations.  Look at Los Zetas.  They were elites in the Mexican military, trained by the USA(!) mind you, and they flipped.  First they were hired by cartels as their own personal army and then eventually got into their own drug smuggling and trafficking operations.  Gee, with virtually unlimited money to be made, who could have seen that coming?!  These are highly trained individuals with access to huge amounts of weaponry.  They even brutally executed a new police commissioner the same evening he was given the job, to send a message!  Worse yet, the violence is starting to spread across the border into the Phoenix area.

It’s amazing how little we learned from the first prohibition.  Corruption runs deep in these areas.  I read a book called “God’s Middle Finger” about the Sierra Madre region of Mexico where some of these cartels reign.  Some good stories in there about how things work in a virtually lawless area.

The global war on drugs is a sham on so many levels.  Evo Morales already stood up to the DEA and told them to get out of his country.  I don’t think Bolivia will be the only country to do so.

Genetically modified seeds: heard of them? Maker is MOonsanto, makers of agent orange, who of course it was never proven (hah!) to cause any medical problems; http://www.democracynow.org site will show you graphic demonstration of people mainly deformed children because of course the USA courts toss out claims against Corp; these seeds have been banned or need to be labeled they have caused so much problems EXCEPT in USA; remember when the people rose up & objected to it being used to “clear the land of the wheat fields?” well, they found a way to put it inside along with those pesky pesticides that caused all the medical problems from Desert Storm they are finally admitting to; just for you to serve YOUR family: and they are making cloned meat complete with chemicals designed just like the chemically treated salt to cause high blood pressure, hardening of arteries, & now of course intensifying it to cause kidney stones, both adults & children; and control of the water supply of the USA is in the hands of the most evil company in the world; from the most evil Gov in the world. SEE the babies being poisoned & killed in China? Trying hard to “match” the USA way that’s done it for years: just like babies dying in Nicaragua; & did we mention the Congo?
