Richardson, 61, is no stranger to government, having served under Bill Clinton as U.N. ambassador and energy secretary.

Bearded political renaissance man and current governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson was picked Wednesday morning to be Barack Obama’s secretary of commerce. The unsurprising move makes Richardson the latest politician drafted by Team Obama, who point to Richardson’s experience at the U.N., as governor, and as energy secretary.

The BBC:

US President-elect Barack Obama has picked New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson as his commerce secretary.

Mr Richardson is one of the most prominent Hispanic politicians in the US and his nomination has been expected for several weeks.

He becomes the latest former rival for the Democratic presidential nomination to join Mr Obama’s cabinet.

The president-elect has named more than half of his cabinet in the month since he was elected president.

Bill Richardson is an excellent choice. Not only does he appeal to big business (his success at luring jobs to New Mexico is proof of that) but he is very popular within the party. When you factor in his Latino heritage it should prove to be a popular appointment.

There is an effect of the president’s moves being watched closely by observers and the public when he has great expectations to live up to. I think Obama has a clear vision of what he wants to achieve with his government, but it might not win him supporters.

I must say President Obama does have a great comfortable look about himself. He is still a popular man in most countries and gee we hope he continues to build strong relationships in the typically difficult countries of past.

In a related breaking news release, Richardson has agreed to grow his whiskers back. Much to the relief of all concerned.

NETWORKS COMPLAIN ABOUT OBAMA NEWS CONFERENCES

In a joint action, the nation’s television networks sent a letter of complaint to the Obama transition team regarding the incessant barrage of news conferences now taking place. The letter conceded that President-elect Obama needed to speak out about the current economic crisis and to announce major appointments. However, they saw no need to have a news conference every time a new White House adviser is appointed.

The letter expressed the hope that there would not be a news conference to announce that Defense Secretary Gates will stay on for another year. Also, the letter noted, since the appointment of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State has been going on for over two weeks, therewould really be no need to hold a news conference to introduce her to the American public.

Of particular concern is the practice of holding these daily conferences in Chicago rather than in the news capitols of Washington or New York. In a separate statement, NBC news director Roger Isles said that, in these times of belt tightening, the burden of travel to Chicago was overwhelming. Already, he noted, Andrea Mitchell was complaining bitterly about having to fly in coach and stay in cheap hotels.
