White House Impeaches an OrnamentPosted on Dec 2, 2008
When Laura Bush oversaw the White House’s Christmas tree decorations, she failed to notice a shiny red-and-white ornament with the message “Impeach Bush.” The orb has since been removed, but the artist who created it still got to party with the Bushes. Seattle Post-Intelligencer: Seattle, take a bow. Seattle’s Deborah Lawrence collaged a stream of political protest messages into her swirly red-and-white patterns. Most prominent among them is the imperative to Impeach Bush. It hung on the tree along with ornaments featuring lovingly painted state seals and state scenery till the Washington Post pointed out that it differed substantially from its fellows. Well lets see, Jim McDermott signed on to the Impeachment Bill, but the White House would never, ever exclude a member of Congress. And, “The lively history of Washington State includes many instances of progressive change.” So what’s all the hoopla about?
As I understand it, the Washington Post found out about the “messages” on Deborah F. Lawrence’s bulb from her friends and verified it from her. After all, what’s the point of a “pointed” message if nobody sees it?
This isn’t embarrassing or childish, this is funny!

“The nine-inch ball is covered with swirly red and white stripes—and, in tiny glued-on text, salutes the Democratic congressman’s support for a resolution to impeach President Bush. (Also showcased: Washington state’s 1919 labor strike, its suffrage movement and the violent anti-World Trade Organization riots of 1999.) Lawrence sent it off to D.C. in September and was very surprised it was accepted for the tree—and that she was invited to this afternoon’s White House reception for the artists, which she flew to D.C. to attend.
“Apparently, they didn’t read it—or Laura Bush is more progressive than I believed,” Lawrence told us.”
“Lawrence shared her secret protest with friends, and the news quickly spread. “An artist doesn’t always get this kind of attention,” she told us. “It took on a life of its own, obviously. In a way, I’m speechless.” washingtonpost.com

Laura had the bulb removed, but you notice she didn’t remove McDermott or Lawrence.
Even she must see the fact-based humor in this! I suspect had the press not said anything she would have left it there, even if she had read the message. Certainly staff in the White House who hang the bulbs must have read it! The last thing in the world Laura must want now, is a media blitz about how many people wanted Bush impeached!
Washington Post kinda forced the issue. And now the reminder of impeachable crimes hangs over Bush’s happy home!
Joy to the world! [fill in the blanks]
After-thought. I suspect unless someone trashed the bulb, it will be returned to Lawrence. Laura is far more reality based than her husband.

Sorry to see this posted here. MSNBC (Olbermann and Maddow) is making a big fuss over this bit of cuteness. While Ms. Lawrence is getting her 60 seconds of fame.
This kind of thing is singularly childish, very much like something Bush probably did at frat parties a few decades back. Probably more recently too.
If sending in a candy-cane “orb” is “artist’s,” Ms. Lawrence, idea of political protest then…not much to say except: pitiful, Ms. Lawrence.
Reminds me of when someone I knew told me of how a friend of hers entered onto the property of someone else to steal a Mitt Romney sign the owners had posted. Then, after girlfriend took the sign home, she thought to tear it up and go back to hurl shreds back into the yard from which she stole it in the first place.
I get the impulse, but not the action.
This kind of stuff is far more embarrassing for “protesters” than for those they pretend to protest. Just guessing, but I expect the Bushes already know that quite a few of us would liked to have seen Dubyah impeached.
No wonder we’re making no progress.
