Connecticut Same-Sex Couples Begin to Wed

Conn Gay Marriage
The New York Times / Shana Sureck

Connecticut couples celebrate Wednesday outside New Haven City Hall after their right to marry was finally validated.

In the face of California’s unsettling passage of Proposition 8 barring gay marriage, gay couples in Connecticut are beginning to exercise their equal rights after a final court hearing cleared the way for same-sex unions, ending a long legal battle in the Constitution State.

The L.A. Times:

A judge cleared the way today for gay marriage to begin Wednesday in Connecticut, a victory for advocates stung by California’s referendum that banned same-sex unions in that state.

Couples immediately marched to New Haven City Hall to get marriage licenses, and less than two hours after the final court hearing, Peg Oliveira and Jennifer Vickery were married in a brief ceremony next to New Haven City Hall.

“I feel so happy,” said Vickery, a 44-year-old attorney. “It’s so much more emotional than I expected.”

Gay marriage is legal now only in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The unions were legal in California until a statewide referendum to ban gay marriage narrowly passed last week. The vote has sparked protests and several lawsuits asking that state’s Supreme Court to overturn the prohibition.

Anthony Look: I suggest we not seek to ban opposite sex marriage. It won’t pass.

But inasmuch as the vast majority of those in California who voted FOR same sex marriage (for Prop. 8) cited the “sanctity of marriage” and the fundamental, traditional, and ‘religious’ foundations of opposite sex marriage then I’m absolutely certain that a Ban on Divorce WILL pass, right?

So let’s move forward with that. The “sanctity of marriage” and the fundamental, traditional, and ‘religious’ foundations of opposite sex marriage” compel us to Ban Divorce.

I heard a rumor that a local radio host in Los Angeles, Tom Leykis, is pushing for a campaign to begin for a vote in California to ban Opposite Sex Marriage; to exemplify the ridiculous notion of how unconstitutional the passage of Prop 8 is.
If true I’d like to see a blogger viral movement to begin petition signing to put a straight marriage ban up for a vote; and just as with prop 8 being retro to gay marriages already consummated, this new proposition would be retro to lets say the year 1900 and make all straight marriages non binding and illegal. Sign me up.

wagonjack,

I agree that unless the CA courts overturn Prop Hate, the state will lose further revenue from gay marriage events. But I hardly think those who opposed the measure will care (or ever learn) about the lost revenue.

We tend to forget that those in opposition to gay marriage tend not to read, pay attention or engage in logical thinking.

Connecticut and Massachusetts will now reap the financial rewards for hotels, banquets, wedding ceremonies (with all the related spending) and restaurants that was coming CA’s way when gay marriages were still allowed here.

I’m upset MORE on a moral level because of the vote here for Prop Hate, but the people here will begin to realize the loss of revenue from these gay marriages will hurt the state too in the next couple of years.

Off Topic: Why can’t all the sites where I can hardly read the confirmation letters/numbers be more like your site here?  On some of those sites I get rejected two or three times before posting and often just give up! Thanks!
