Schwarzenegger: Prop. 8 Outcome ‘Unfortunate’

During the Proposition 8 campaign and amid the fallout since California voters approved the banning of same-sex marriage, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proved that, although he once was teased for grunting and mugging his way through dialogue-challenged movies, he can now mince words with the best of the political crowd.

Los Angeles Times:

“It’s unfortunate, obviously, but it’s not the end,” Schwarzenegger said in an interview Sunday on CNN. “I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area.”

With his favorable comments toward gay marriage, the governor’s thinking appears to have evolved on the issue.

In past statements, he has said he believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman and has rejected legislation authorizing same-sex marriage. Yet he has also said he would not care if same-sex marriage were legal, saying he believed that such an important societal issue should be determined by the voters or the courts.

Schwarzenegger publicly opposed Proposition 8, which amends the state Constitution to declare that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

If your gay or lesbian, you can still LIVE together. Marriage is for a man and a woman. Its not like your being seperated forever. You just cant be married.

Who you love, and who you sleep with is a personal issue. Some white women like black men - some black women like white men. Some men love women who are obese - others are hot for the twiggy look. It doesn’t really matter to me if a man or woman prefers a partner of the same sex. But what’s all the fuss about prop 8? It was passed by an overwhelming majority so why not leave it alone? The gay and lesbian rights movement is not an issue of equal rights, it’s an issue of control and blatant disregard for the constitutional rights of the majority. The passage of prop 8 takes nothing away from gays and lesbians. This group ALREADY has more rights and perks than the straight, white American male. Which by the way is the REAL minority. Spit on a straight guy and it’s a minor issue - but spit on someone who is gay, and it’s a hate crime. Where’s the justice? The gay movement is out of hand. They claim the right to ‘love’ whom they want but they’ve become a militant group with an agenda that strives to take away the rights of those who are not of their thinking. Storming churches? That’s not love. Overturning the votes of the majority? That’s not love. The real issue is control. Give it a break already.

Let me first say that I have NOTHING against gays/lesbians. Our only difference we have is our sexual orientation. That being said, I have aproblem with what has taken place in California. Just about 9 years ago I lived in LA and witnessed the passing of Prop 22. The people voted. Marriage is to be between a man and a woman. Then it was overturned. It went to vote again in the form of Prop 8…it passed
This argument is not about equality, because as you all may rememeber in California you have the same legal rights as man/woman couple . The same rights!
This is an argument about RECOGNITION and setting a LEGAL PRECEDENT.
Gays/Lesbians I understand your concern and your want to be a recognized group, but there is more to it. I have heard the argument “I love somebody. I should have the same rights” . If you base rights on love, then polygamists have the “right” to more than one wife, which I am sure rings as a perversion in your mind.  But see if Prop 8 had not PASSED then you have polygamists and other practioners of more EXTREME alternative lifestyles HAVING a legal voice.  So if you don’t mind living next door to a LEGALLY recognized polygamist, keep fighting on.
He married his wives out of love and he “deserves” the same rights as anyone else too, doesn’t he?
This is not about you gays and lesbians. This is about a body of citizens concernned with society at large. It is about our very society staying intact free of the worst that human nature can conjure up. Society has spoken, they have closed the gate preventing worse atrocities.

“The safety of the many is well worth the sacrifuce of the few.”

Stop victimizing yourselves and being selfish and understand that the people, the TRUE deciders of law, have made thier decision.

See the bigger picture, live and love, and be happy.

A bigger concern should be that the majority public have lost their voice due to the ideals of the few, namely the Clifornia supreme court and their supreme abuse of their position as judges of the law, not creators of the law.

Think what you will.

the california head of state’s record on civil rights is quite depressing according to the ACLU, an organization i have supported for years.  those who follow his remarks and actions should not be surprised. his family background can certainly shed light on the way he was brought up.  as most are aware, his closest relatives were austrian nazis, hardly the kind of political alliance that one can be proud of, especially here in california, much like george bush’s family who were proud hitler supporters.  excepting a few wayward mormons and catholics, little things like equal protection remain cherised values. our latest proposition ballot shows that as citizens we cherish the rights of chickens in cages of industrial farms, but neglect to consider the benefits of the equal protection laws for gays.  go figure!!
