Congolese Ethnic Violence Worsens

DRC Camp
bbc.co.uk / Kate Eshebly

A large refugee camp—similar to the Kusasi camp in Rutshuru, Democratic Republic of Congo, pictured above—was burned and looted, aggravating food and water scarcity issues in the region.

The chaos in the Democratic Republic of Congo escalated Friday as a refugee camp of 50,000 people reportedly was looted and burned, probably by Tutsi rebel groups. The violence is rooted in the colonial ethnic divisions that led to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

The BBC:

The UN says it has credible reports that camps sheltering 50,000 displaced people in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have been destroyed.

Reports suggest the camps were forcibly emptied and looted before being burned, the UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, said.

Aid groups say they are struggling to reach an estimated 250,000 people in the region fleeing fierce fighting between government and rebel forces.

Intense diplomatic efforts are under way to end the crisis.

A ceasefire is holding in and around Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, but aid agency chiefs say the situation remains highly volatile.

Check out the Onion’s “Our Dumb World” description of the Congo. It’s funny, appauling, tragic, and entirely too acurate.

Did people see the BBC Video—-my gawd!! WTF?! Rawanda, Darfur—all over again!! Is anyone asking the fricking candidates about this?

Nobody has said much about Darfur, that I’ve heard. Anyone? But, I have stopped listening to them. Just cant take it anymore. I am voting as a ‘surrogate” for someone else—that is how I look at it.

If the EU votes NOT to go in—what do we do? Would we have the means to deal with it , if not for Iraq and Afghanistan? The UN mandates are just lame without US (and other) military support. When will China be asked to help? Or, are they already? I guess I’d have to ask BBC.

Because no one is going to talk about anything but the election. Cant be over soon enough for me.

I sure dont think I am the only one who has had enough of it! It has become a media free-for -all—they dont have to do news now. They just report on the fricking election.

This Congo catastrophe remains the greatest issue never discussed by anyone.

NO one cares, for it’s just “Africans killing each other”. And unlike Darfur, limousine liberals like Cloney and zionist vermin like Elie Wiesel can’t use it as some anti-Arab propoganda tool, so no one cares.
