An ‘Emergency Effort to Stop Barack Obama’Posted on Oct 28, 2008
(The Secret Money blog is a joint project of the Center for Investigative Reporting and National Public Radio.) Anti-Obama ads, amid an onslaught of emails The political action committee—founded by a trio who have tried to prove a link between Saddam Hussein and the Sept. 11 attacks—has new anti-Obama ads on the air and a fundraising machine in overdrive. One ad dredges up inflammatory comments by Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and the other says Obama wants to give driver’s licenses and government benefits to “illegals.” A fundraising email today said the group has raised $1 million for its “emergency effort to stop Barack Obama” and seeks $1 million more for the campaign’s final week. The email promises, “Almost all of our net dollars raised—after marketing costs—are going directly into our ad war against Obama.” That phrase “after marketing costs” is significant. Of $903,000 in expenditures against Obama reported this month, about 56 percent, or $507,000, went to paying for fundraising emails like the one we just mentioned. Media buys and production accounted for 39 percent, or $356,000. The rest, $40,000, went to advertising, direct mail and phone calls. Peter Leitner, the group’s treasurer, told us, “There’s a lag in reporting. We’re spending a large amount of money on the media buys…The biggest ticket item is the airtime.” Here’s the Rev. Wright ad, which says, “For 20 years, Barack Obama followed a preacher of hate.”
This ad (below) reprises the PAC’s first one, which tied Obama’s support for driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. This ad continues with the immigration theme to say, “Obama’s plan gives illegals social security benefits and raises taxes for his health care plan to cover them. Who pays? You do.” All the ads are stamped with the slogan, “Barack Obama. Too Radical. Too Risky.” The fundraising emails go even further. Another one sent out today says, “Barack Obama is not simply a risky choice as our next president—he is a dangerous one.” Far from only asking for money, the ever-flowing emails blast out the message too: “Doesn’t he remember what happened on 9/11? More than 3,000 Americans were murdered. Doesn’t he want to prevent that from ever happening again? If he supports driver’s licenses for illegals, the answer is clear.”

“How the hell is Obama a “terrorist?” The only attacks on innocent civilians for political ends I’ve noticed lately are being directed the Master of Terror at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.”
~~~~~
I certainly couldn’t have said this better myself, though I’ve definitely tried.
I would only add that it’s not just ‘lately’ (though admittedly, that’s a relative term) the terrorists at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, (and wherever else they plan their atrocities) have been terrorizing innocents. It’s been 8 years; here, there, and everywhere.
That was the plan long ago. To terorize the world.
Whatever became of free speech? Just because someone attends some church does not necessarily mean he must agree with the views expressed by the person in charge. What is the matter with a country that thinks everyone must march in lockstep? Barack Obama has nothing to explain on this. If you want to know his views on something, just ask him.
These hateful bastards should walk in a black man or woman’s shoes for a mile before condemning Jeremiah Wright’s language, as extreme as it has been from time to time. Obama says that Wright’s ideas about race are stamped in time, and maybe they are, but they are completely understandable given the black experience on this continent these past 400 years.
If 2008 has taught us anything, it’s the racism is not dead, something the lying the right has been trying to sell us for years.
Everybody should watch this! Bill Clinton and Obama together in a midnight rally in Florida. Two great speeches, first Clinton and then Obama. What a one-two punch. Great stuff! Don’t miss it!
• “Maybe we need to bring in the United Nations International Election Monitoring team? They could be randomly posted at polling places and central ballot counting centers around the country. We could throw in a few armed peacekeepers in those cool baby blue helmets to help put down any violent attempts at keeping people from voting.”
I love that, especially the part about the baby blue helmets.
And yep..we’re a 3rd world country all right. Been that way for a really long time now it seems. Democracy, rule of law, constitution, international treaties and conventions, whatever…all gone. So we’re just like any other collection of victims of a now fascist authoritarian state, with nothing but corruption at the highest levels. The higher they are situated in the mob, the more corrupt they are. The curtain has yet to reveal the full measure of Cheney et al’s treachery. But, we’ll get all of this poisonous pus out and the criminals prosecuted.
JFoster2k,
I agree that we should all be concerned. It is as spirtgirl has said…desperate people do desperate things. And, it’s not like we haven’t seen them in action before, and for so long now.
On this though…
• “..I hope against hope that they don’t escalate the wars for political ends, but I’m not naive enough to think they wouldn’t…”
I fear that they already have, and that it is only by the sheer sensibilities of other nations that the whole powder keg hasn’t exploded. This recent action on Syrian soil that killed 7 civilians is simply impossible to ignore.
Here’s a piece that includes some critical input from one of my own highly esteemed academic mentors, and this has been the case for several years now of the Bush Doctrine:
US Raids Ignore International Law
Tuesday 28 October 2008
by: Matt Renner and Maya Schenwar, t r u t h o u t | Report
AP) Washington - While US officials continue to avoid discussing the weekend strikes that killed eight people in eastern Syria, Middle East experts have condemned the attacks as a violation of international law that threatens to further destabilize US-Syria relations.
Sunday, special operations forces carried out a cross-border raid from Iraq into Syria. Press reports quote one unnamed US official who claims that the strike was successful in killing Abu Ghadiya, a terrorist leader in the region. Details of the strike have not yet been released by the US government.
However, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said the attack killed eight unarmed civilians in a farming village. Ahmed Salkini, spokesman for the Syrian Embassy in Washington, DC, condemned the strike, calling it a “criminal terrorist attack” that “intentionally targeted innocent civilians.”
According to Princeton international law scholar Richard Falk, neither the US nor Syria presented sufficient evidence to back up their claims. Regardless of the intent of the raid, Falk called the US action “a serious violation of international law,” which allows for the use of violence only in self-defense.
Yet, Falk does not predict that any enforcement action will be taken, because international laws regulating the use of military force have been so undermined by the US and other countries in recent years. Falk called the raid “the latest display of Washington’s disregard for the restraints of international law on the use of force.
“We are witnessing a unilateral expansion of the scope of the right of self-defense [by the Bush administration],” Falk told Truthout. “This is a suspension of the rule of law in the name of counter-insurgency or homeland security. It is an extension of executive authority and the imperial presidency.”
We should be all be very concerned. The right-wing has proven many times how effective tactics can be despite a lack of clear policy. The worst part is that too many Americans hear only what they are predisposed to hear. And they act on it. The polls have thus far been encouraging, but we all know what can happen when the republican fear-machine gets rolling.
Terrorist, Socialist, Marxist and the other slanderous shitballs they have flung at Obama can stick in the minds of some undecideds.
I hope against hope that they don’t escalate the wars for political ends, but I’m not naive enough to think they wouldn’t.
The bitter irony and blatant hypocracy of the Christian right is evidenced by their actions in opposition to their own scripture. “Love thy neighbor”, “Thou shalt not bear false witness”, “Thou shalt not kill” ... I guess those rules only apply to others or when it’s convenient for them.
Maybe we need to bring in the United Nations International Election Monitoring team? They could be randomly posted at polling places and central ballot counting centers around the country. We could throw in a few armed peacekeepers in those cool baby blue helmets to help put down any violent attempts at keeping people from voting. The UN could broker cease-fires between local warlords and get religious leaders to promise their congregations will behave lawfully. They could then spot-check counting results to assure reporting is accurate. Anyone caught committing voter fraud could be arrested on the spot. A certification statement could then be issued - letting the rest of the world know that our election met international standards of democratic process.
Everybody knows money coming out of the RNC has a dirty history of passing through slimy hands. We find it disgusting. The repub loyal think it’s smart.
Any new horse-shit they are throwing is aimed at the new or swing voters who never pay attention.
But everybody is hurting from Bush/repub money management, and that’s where the focus needs to stay. In that department Obama is clearly ahead because he isn’t Bush, or a republican.
The horse-shit doesn’t scare me.
Here’s what scares me:
1- McCain turned the conversation back to war today.
2- We illegally attacked inside of the borders of another country yesterday.
3- Bush went to visit the RNC today.
4- Commentators following the McCain campaign noted today, McCains upbeat attitude indicated he was convinced he would win, to the point he was almost euphoric.
5- Shortly after the economy took a nose-dive McCain announced he would have a surprise for everyone late in October.
Hmmm, here we are in late October, Bush is having secret meetings with the RNC, we are trying to start a rumble in yet another country. And McCain can hardly contain his joy over his certain landslide!
So, either we are all in la-la land, or the plan is to have a sudden and viscious attack on the United States, or United States interests abroad. Which will cause massive damage and many casualties, scare the beegeebees out of those who still haven’t voted and turn the uncommited back to voting for the mighty war horse. Crippled tho he may be.
Or, Bush will simply declare a halt on the elections and once again head the ship of state into the waves crashing on the rocky shore.
Crash alert ahead.
Could it get any worse than it already is?
Stupid question.
Is ‘Bush the dunder-head’ still in office?
If we haven’t learned anything in the last eight years, we certainly should have learned by now, there is no low to low, no horror to horrible, no improbability to improbable that Bush and the repubs wont try to pull it off it means they stay in power!
And that’s what scares me. Hope I’m wrong.
I was recently asked why I did not vote early. Well if you live in Ohio, where elections have been stolen, the idea of having your cast vote lying around so there are more opportunities for ‘officials’ to misplace it, is not all that appealing. It is going to take an overwhelming election for Senator Obama to get elected. If it is claimed to be “close” then the bastards will use every unimaginable trick to make sure this doesn’t happen. Anyone who thinks elections are on the level, obviously has not lived in the state of Ohio.
I’ve been having nitemares about Sarah Palin & spouse. She’s either abusing or killing the kids, and he is in the Oval Office abusing and threatening to kill respected members of our government.
I am not calling these logical or reasonable nightmares, just an indication of the stresses this campaign, that has gone on forever, is causing.
I voted today. Now, no matter what the outcome, I am not still in a position to do much about it…
Except to mention my stress, and encourage everyone I know to vote early and vote often.
Turn out is the best protection we have to ensure an honest vote. Plus the lawyers I hear Obama has on the ground to keep the opposition a bit more honest.
My understanding of the conventional electioneering wisdom is that if you’re going to slander your opponent, you have to start earlier than the last week and lead with your most believable stuff. At this point (hopefully) people are just going to assume the attacks are more of the same business about Obama being a Muslim, socialist and terrorist, and they have already decided what they think of that.
The really sad thing is that, win or lose, this kind of reckless barbarity poisons the country’s political and social life and will taint the reputations of the perpetrators far into the future.
I’m getting very concerned that the neocon/Repub’s strategy understands/accepts that the polling info is as heavily favored for “Obama’s” election which has me wondering what is their next move. It makes me both concerned and worried. For reasons like…. why are the “undecideds” still…. the ”undecided”? How can this section, significant in its numbers, of the electorate remain as the “undecided”?
Report thisWith the current situation in America (and the rest of the world as well), how can a sizeable portion of our populace remain “on the fence”?
What if, as an “end move”, you hold back your committed people in the Repug’s fold as reported “undecideds”? It would be a hellalot easier to “prove and/document” these voters/votes then those “outside” this category (ie. Declared Demo’s/ Repub’s) afterwards, later on.
Okay, I agree that what I’m postulating here is a scenario that appears to be somewhat paranoid, but I have a different thought about my attitude. Regretfully, had I been just a little more paranoid/attentive to what was “really” going on , this “new world” we find ourselves in wouldn’t have been as “foreign” to me as it became.
