Citizen Tim Takes On Obama by Himself

(The Secret Money blog is a joint project of the Center for Investigative Reporting and National Public Radio.)

The one form of political advertising that’s completely unregulated and free is the speech of an individual citizen, even when money amplifies that speech by putting it on the airwaves. Tim D’Annunzio, who describes himself as a “concerned North Carolina businessman,” is doing just that. The former defense contractor has produced several hard-hitting ads against Obama with now-familiar themes: Taxes, Abortion, Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers.

The only ad we know is running on TV (below) hits Obama on taxes. In it, D’Annunzio says he was living below the poverty line a decade ago, but built his company, Paraclete Armor & Equipment, into a workforce of hundreds. He says Obama’s “promised tax increases will devastate people like me, by taking more than half of my business profits. This will force me to cut jobs and increase prices.”

A former Army parachute jumper, D’Annunzio founded Paraclete to make body armor for the military and law enforcement. It provides equipment for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and makes millions from defense contracts.

The company received more than $26 million in federal contracts since 2001, mostly from the Air Force, according to the government database USASpending.gov. About $2.6 million of the contracts were awarded without competition. In addition, in 2006 the company received a $3.5 million loan from the Agriculture Department’s Rural Business-Cooperative Service. In 2005, it received a $293,000 loan from the Small Business Administration.

Paraclete gave $2,000 to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in 2004.

A larger, public company, MSA (Mine Safety Appliances Co.), bought Paraclete for $30 million in 2006. (When D’Annunzio says he would have to lay off workers under Obama’s tax plan, it’s not clear what company he’s talking about. We were unable to contact him.)

D’Annunzio’s other ads are on his Web site. In one, he criticizes Obama’s “ultra-liberal stand on abortion” and says, “As a Christian, I cannot vote for Barack Obama.” Another focuses on former Weatherman radical Bill Ayers; D’Annunzio says, “I cannot vote for Barack Obama because of his association with terrorists.” Yet another skewers Obama for his former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and shows Obama without his hand over his heart during the national anthem. “We can’t afford a president that uses racially charged comments to divide us,” D’Annunzio says.

North Carolina has somehow become a home base for Obama-bashing independent operators. If you have any insights into why this is, we’d love to hear them. Besides D’Annunzio, the state is home to the Committee for Truth in Politics and RightChange.com, two of the biggest-spending conservative groups on the air.

We’ll see soon enough how much money D’Annunzio is willing to commit.

Tim D’Annunzio is a hard working man who made sure soldiers were protected.  How does this make him pro war or any of the other things said here?  One of his salesmen, who left after MSA bought Paraclete, said he truly missed working for someone who would give a vest away before seeing someone unprotected. Tim ensured many soldiers had vests, even if they could not afford them.  Yes, he also made money from the same but your ideas of government contacts are extremely inaccurate.  Isn’t this a free enterprise country? These comments sound like you hate anyone who has done well for themselves or their families or supports the welfare of our troops.  The reason Paraclete was awarded the contracts was due to the products exceptional quality.  A man works hard at something for 30 years and becomes a success - someone in this forum called it “welfare” - you are amazing.  I wish people on welfare would work 1/1000 as hard as Tim has, the world would be a far better place.  He does have strong political views and since he produced commercials, the views will be open for public discussion.  However, you have attacked a person you know nothing about in areas you little understand.  You have an entire forum here to personally attack one of the most generous people I have ever come across instead of discussing the political issues you may disagree with.  Shame on you.

Also, the article noted that they did not know what company Tim would lay off employees from since he sold Paraclete Armor.  Tim reinvested the money into another local business that stimulates the economy.  Your have shown hate for someone who has a different political view and made spiteful comments that show you have no concept of who you are talking about.

Also, when did not supporting Obama become the only benchmark needed for determining if someone is racist?  That is an extremely stereotypical attitude.

I know I am opening myself up to the unregulated slander of the internet by posting here but you people are just plain wrong. Tim started his company in the early 80’s making jumpsuits for his skydiving friends following his discharge from the Army. Over the years his products came to be known for innovation and quality. It was this innovation and quality that eventually led some of his jumpsuit customers in the general Fort Bragg area to approach him with requests for better, more useful military equipment. It started out small and many times his ideas where stolen (to spite several patents) by the likes of you lefties. You see lefties have this general ideology that “immanent domain” applies universally. By the way that’s called communism. Tim’s company didn’t make war machines, or bombs, or anything that could harm anyone in any way. That’s right. His company manufactured body armor. You know the kind of body armor that caused so much controversy in the left when the war kicked off? Don’t you remember screaming “why don’t our troops have adequate protection?” Tim stepped up in a time of need to employ several hundred American’s in the righteous task of providing several thousand of our troops, our brothers, overseas with the protection they deserve. So before you go calling him the great evil why don’t you ask your self what you would have done. Would you of stuck to your morals? Would you of seen a need and filled it rather than complain about it? I served two tours overseas, one in Iraq, one in Afghanistan.  Tim made armor for me, and he put the same care in to mine that he did for every last piece of equipment. So again ask yourself what you would do if your son was being deployed with equipment that wasn’t the best available? Would you let him go or provide him with the best? You see I am Tim’s son and I did deploy with the best. Anyway, I digress. Tim is a man with strong conviction and ethics he supported McCain because Obama has neither.

the decent American people did not see our troops killing children like their own. If they know that chock and awe is not a fire work but criminal use of loads of depleted uranium ? if they know the rouge McCain participated in burning people animals and trees in south east Asia? If they know that he is a bad soldier not a war hero? if decent American know that a group of chicken hocks how dodged the draft coned them into illegal wars ? If they know half of it ? go figure

There would be far fewer wars if the corporate entities were prohibited from raising salaries in the executive suite, or making more that a 3% profit during the time their country is at war.

re: Big B

“These late eclipses in the sun and moon portend no good to us: though the wisdom of nature can reason it thus and thus, yet nature finds itself scourged by the sequent effects: love cools, friendship falls off, brothers divide: in cities, mutinies; in countries, discord; in palaces, treason; and the bond cracked ‘twixt son and father.”

It never ceases to amaze me how someone can support a war where lies were used to justify its start, make money off it, accept that killing of innocents is just part of the “collateral damage..”  in one breath and then make moral judgements of someone else’s position on a woman’s right to make choices for her own health and body as extreme in the next….

Here’s a posssible answer to the question:

In my political discussion with “Joe the Plumber” who came to fix one of my appliances and who has way more than six young children and is finding it very difficult to make ends meet, he said that all he cared about was the right to life and the right to own a gun.  Didn’t care that Palin would be a heart-beat away from the presidency, didn’t care that the economy was in a shambles and didn’t care about the killing in an illegal, protracted occupation of a foreign country.

Nor did he care that, as Barney Frank said, “The Right believes life begins at conception and ends at birth.”

He admitted his children received gov. help for lunches.

I found him to be what I thought was a decent human being and cared about his work.  Go figure.

But this should come as no surprise, for this is Bushes america now, and no matter who is elected president, it may take the better part of a generation to excercise that evil from our midst.

On Nov 5th our country will be leaning over the sink with a brillo pad, scrubbing ourselves bloody, repeating “out, out, damned spot!”

He is an American, he him self has said it. A true red meat American who embraces the no-bid contract to produce equipment for the enabling of the military-law enforcement complex. Woe betide anyone who dare question his patriotic venality. He knows he speaks the truth (he him self has said it) when he states that no man with a permanent tan should ever be allowed to question his holy vision of relentless greed.
My friends, my friends, John McCain will protect Tim the succubus and his money. Another of those forgotten, hard working Americans, who will be unfairly taxed by those Socialist liberal Democrats.

I hope you read this because YOU are just ONE of the many financial TERRORITS that are taking this country down and you don’t give a flying rat’s ass. Probably a bathroom favorite of your senators, huh? Well, don’t fret too much because you have the next 2 and 1/2 months left of w and dick’s term or more if they decide not to transfer power. Even then you will still have the time to ‘rake it in’ before any law is passed to stop your theft of our money. Hope you enjoy you time in hell.

Half his profits?  He works for the military complex, it is not like he is going to sell me some body armor?  If we stopped the war he might be out of business anyway, then he would not have to worry about paying his taxes, he can join the rest of us.  Raising prices to the military is kind of like saying I am going to charge for air.

If he was smart he would move his plant to Mexico and increase his profits, maybe the military bids only buy stuff made in the USA?

Far as I am concerned, as a tax payer I paid for his fucking add.

Aww shucks, this poor SOB won’t make as much money off death and destruction if we have a president who dosen’t go out and start wars. My heart really bleeds for the asshole. He’s just another of the parasites, like Halliburton, blackwater, etc. who have taken advantage of the fact that we have a war mongering stooge at the helm. Another who is driven by nothing but self serving greed. So out of touch that he actually believes he can find a sympathetic ear in these times? His ilk has made plenty of money these past 6 years, how about we let the middle class get some attention for a change.

There is considerable evidence of Republican government granting small $400K to $800K consulting fees to small defense related companies that offer little more than a web site.

These small companies are able to afford $50K political contributions to the RNC and buy many of the fund raising dinners and honorariums to guest speakers.

It’s a pretty big scam and both parties nod-wink do it.

We need to vote out all encumbents and send a message.

I’m ashamed to say it, but I’m from North Carolina. What’s wrong with the people in NC? Wish I knew, but believe me, we’re not all selfish, greedy, bible-thumping morons with only a few teeth and barely able to chew gum and walk at the same time.

Ok…having said that, I am a proud Obama-Biden supporter.  I cast my vote for them yesterday, and so did my husband.  My daughter will do the same. We are native North Carolinians who have never drunk the red kool-aid, we’ve never been racists, and we’re not ruled by FEAR and IGNORANCE.  We never voted for either Bush nor did we vote for Ronald Reagan.

WE have NEVER watched Fox Noise, nor do we subscribe to any religious denomination. I’m afraid that far too many of my fellow North Carolinians are simply too blind, too selfish, too fearful, and too stubborn to accept that their thoughts should not be controlled by their preachers, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Michelle Malcan, Rush Limbaugh, and Wolf Blitzer.

You can all see why I support Barack Obama.  I think my state has become so much more RED since Bush was appointed president in 2000, and Obama gives me HOPE.

Another multi-millionaire trying to scare the masses, because he is scared of paying more taxes.  Selfish rich guys that make more money each year than most will earn in a lifetime trying to continue the debunked trickle-down theory of economics so that the government policy of funneling money from the lower classes to the rich can continue.  The ability of the rich to broadcast their message at will and distort reality in the process is the reason why populist movements are always fighting an uphill battle.  Jerks like this can come out of the woodwork and distort the truth and force progressives to once again go on the defensive and debunk a bunch of B.S.  It seems their is no end to the crap they will sling at us from their mountain tops.
