Christopher Buckley has resigned from his father’s magazine, with the help of a stiff boot to the rear, thanks to his recent endorsement of Barack Obama. The satirist says he has no hard feelings, but “I have been effectively fatwahed (is that how you spell it?) by the conservative movement, and the magazine that my father founded must now distance itself from me.”

Christopher Buckley in the Daily Beast:

So, I have been effectively fatwahed (is that how you spell it?) by the conservative movement, and the magazine that my father founded must now distance itself from me. But then, conservatives have always had a bit of trouble with the concept of diversity. The GOP likes to say it’s a big-tent. Looks more like a yurt to me.

While I regret this development, I am not in mourning, for I no longer have any clear idea what, exactly, the modern conservative movement stands for. Eight years of “conservative” government has brought us a doubled national debt, ruinous expansion of entitlement programs, bridges to nowhere, poster boy Jack Abramoff and an ill-premised, ill-waged war conducted by politicians of breathtaking arrogance. As a sideshow, it brought us a truly obscene attempt at federal intervention in the Terry Schiavo case.

So, to paraphrase a real conservative, Ronald Reagan: I haven’t left the Republican Party. It left me.

Mr. Buckley,

You are just one of us now, welcome aboard. Appreciate your honesty. Most differences have been devised for control, we may agree on more issues than supposed,  healthy discussion of ideas should be an option, looking forward to reading your ideas.

Sorry to hear that they took away the conch shell, Mr. Buckley…but you knew it was coming and that’s why you didn’t print your endorsement in the Review.

But take heart. You know as well as i do that there’s nothing “conservative” about the conservative movement in America anymore. It’s all gay marriage and budget busting spending programs.

Mr. Buckley, I am truly sorry for the recent events that have caused you to be removed from the staff of the magazine that your great, departed father founded.
It is to cry, that the new Neo-Conservative, cannot stand for, and will not take any criticism or dissent from their hurried troubled little thoughts and minds.
I, though liberal that I am, was very impressed with the logic and force of mind brought to bear by your belated and revered father, Mr. William F. Buckley Jr.
He was among the most radical(root thinking) people of his days. He impressed me more than all the neo-cons, put together and more than that made an impression on this liberal, to the point of tolerance and respect.
The Far left and the Extreme Far Right Christian Wing of the two party system, have become the hiding place of intolerant and ineffective thinkers and those who for lack of brains, cannot think for themselves and do not wish to tolerate the thinking people of the world.
Crimes against humanity are caused by those of this ilk and for want of a mind, like Erich Fromm, so greatly stated in his tome, Escape From Freedom, are the madding crowd of followers that could and should learn to think for themselves but do not for want of a leader that will be the “messiah” to them. I, for one do not let anyone think for me, I, seek out the facts and learn from them what I need to use as a basis for my decisions.
Mr. Buckley, it should be apparent to you now that the Repuglican, Grand Orgy Party, is not the party that you grew up in. Sadly, the Repuglican system, has become one of inertia and ineffective leadership, which is being ground down by people who for lack of a better term are “communistic, fasistic, and intolerant of the other, who does not think or toe the party line, like good little citizens should.
With all my regrets, to you and your family,

Sincerely,  Nelson J. Robison.

The Conservative Intellectual is an endangered species, rapidly being pushed out of existence by the Radical Reactionary Thug.

Welcome to the New Age, Mr. Buckley.

I respect the Conservative Intellectual.  He/She defends Conservatism with facts and logic and attacks Progressives with…facts and logic!

But the C/I is being forced out of existence by the Thug, the Ann Coultergiest, the Rush Limbaugh, and the Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly.

Isn’t it amazing, Mr. Buckley, that the only safe place for a C/I who doesn’t endorse McHypocrit and Palinanity is with the Left????
