Who Is Behind the ‘Radical Islam’ DVD?

Scan of the "Obsession" mailer obtained by Truthdig

We managed to get ahold of one the mailers in question. Click here for a scan of the front and here for a scan of the back.

The Secret Money blog is a joint project of the Center for Investigative Reporting and National Public Radio.

The blogosphere is alive with the sound of buzz—all about an inflammatory DVD on radical Islam being distributed to millions of households at the peak of election season.

Critics are calling the DVD, “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West,” anti-Muslim hate, or politicking, or both. It doesn’t mention or even obliquely allude to the presidential candidates. It couldn’t, since it was made in 2006. But as whisper campaigns dog Obama with rumors that he’s a secret Muslim, the DVD showed up as an insert in some 70 newspapers, with an emphasis in swing states.

The obvious question: Who is behind it?

And the answer: The DVD is distributed by the Clarion Fund, a nonprofit set up by the film’s producer, Rabbi Raphael Shore. But not much is known about the group. It’s a 501(c)(3) charity, which means it can’t engage in partisan politics.
It did apparently have material on its Web site supporting John McCain, but then took it down.

Clarion has connections to Aish HaTorah, a strongly pro-Israel Jewish educational organization promoting Jewish identity and pride. Aish HaTorah has offices in Israel and the U.S.

Clarion’s corporate filings in Delaware list the same address as Aish HaTorah New York. Clarion’s two directors in 2006 were Shore and Jacob Fetman, who served as Aish’s CFO. In 2007, the organization listed its directors as Shore, Henry Harris and Rebecca Kabat. Rabbi Harris is educational director at Aish HaTorah NY and Kabat has also worked for Aish.

Shore himself has worked for Aish HaTora. He told the Washington Times in 1992 that he “went to Israel 10 years ago to try to ‘rescue’ his twin brother, Ephraim, from Aish HaTorah,” because he though it was a “big hoax.” Instead, Shore became convinced and joined the organization’s management. (Their other brother, David, created Fox’s TV show “House.”)

Aish’s Ephraim Shore has also been president of the organization HonestReporting.com, which, according to Aish’s Web site, helped to produce and promote Raphael Shore’s film.

But don’t ask where the Clarion Fund gets its funding. It’s not telling. And with its 501(c)(3) status, it doesn’t have to.

It looks that the conflict between the Israelis and the Arabs will never end in Israel!
We are living in the US with no general conflicts and with no hate between us and as a
matter of fact we are seeing many projects a cross the nation between the Jews and the Muslims.
What is going on with this non-sense “Obsession” Movie!
What I see that some Israeli groups is trying to import their conflict with the Muslims to create hate and that may bring violence between the American Muslims and the Jews living in the US. Personally I will do all my efforts to prevent hate and violence between us and the Jews in America. We all should UNITE against
The import of hate.  Our Government should wake up and open their eyes prevent any interference in our national securities from any foreign country.
I pray that our rational Government stop the Import of hate from Israel!

I received one of these today. It’s blatant hate propaganda and you know it is total bullshit if it was featured prominently on Fixed Noise - er uh Fox News. The Clarion Fund is not ‘a non-partisan organization devoted to educating the public about national security issues.’ The film, much like it’s claimed surrogates at CNN and Fox News, tries to spin bias opinions as historical facts. After watching this film, my opinion is that its sole purpose is to instigate fear rather than educate. It does not address the root causes of violent religious fanaticism, nor suggest any positive solution. A war of ideologies is won in the hearts and minds of the people, not by violent action as it only fans the flames and provides them more ‘just cause’ in their minds.

ChrisJ:

“O Dar,
“Islamophobia” is a logical reaction by conscientous people to an ideology that promotes honor killing, xenophobia, terrorism and intolerance. If anything, western countries have been extremely open to Islam itself. But to be concerned about extremism here is the only sane reaction to something that should be alarming to everybody. Islamic fundamentalists continue to plot new methods of mass murder, for the sake of bringing down anyone who does not agree with them. They believe that they have a religious duty for their religion to dominate the world.
This is a reality. It may be a hopefully small minority of Muslims who believe in this ideology (although there is a conspicuous absence of protest against it by the majority), but those that do are all motivated by this same ideology worldwide, and as such it is a real threat. To raise awareness about it is not just “scaremongering”.
Furthermore, it already does exist in the US. It is being preached in the prison system, by the Muslim Brotherhood, and in Saudi Arabian funded mosques and schools all over the country.
How do you justify ignoring the reality? Would you ignore it if they succeeded tomorrow in killing thousands of people again in some attack?”

——

There is a vast ocean-sized difference between someone who discusses Al-Qaeda’s plans against the U.S., and someone who screams about a global Islamic war against Western Civilization.

People like Daniel Pipes are of the latter type.

They engage in two great lies, both not surprisingly beneficial to Israel:
1-They claim that the attacks against the U.S. are due to some inherent hatred inside Islam, and not due to any reaction to American actions in the Middle East.

2-They cast an antire religion and civilization as an enemy, thus making any kind of empathy, understanding, or debate unnecessary.

In these two ways they can to stop people here from re-evaluating their government’s foerign policy decisions, and even cause them to want to perpetuate them and increase them (thus, Bin Laden’s anger over a few thousand American troops in Saudi Arabia is ignored, and in reaction the U.S. puts 150,000 troops next door).

And along with that, Israel is cast a s similar victim as well. It’s attacked not because of it’s criminality, but because these horrible Muslims just hate everyone.

Funny enough, if a Muslim made and distributed a dvd around showing Americans engaging in hate and war-mongering speech agaisnt Muslims and Islam, and interpersed it with footage of Americans crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan, he’d be decried as a spreader of hate and lies and propoganda.

Apparently some types of lies and propoganda are more aceptable than others.

•  “But to be concerned about extremism here is the only sane reaction to something that should be alarming to everybody.”

Chris, we ARE concerned about ‘extremism’, but it’s not the Islamic type that has us terrified. We’ve had 8 years of RADICAL EXTREMISM, running our country into the inferno, while the terrorists doing it have created a fake beast and told us to ‘look there’ while they destroyed us. Blame it on the Muslim extremists.

It’s total bullshit of course. Not because there aren’t a percentage of “Islamists” in the Global Terrorist Cabal, but they aren’t the dangerous ones. Nope, if you wanna find the root of the extremist danger, just look to the road between Texas and Washington DC. We have a least 40 million Christian Terrorists among us, and the Cabal in DC has aligned itself with them.

Muslims and Islam are the LEAST of our worries.

And this?

•  “…How do you justify ignoring the reality? Would you ignore it if they succeeded tomorrow in killing thousands of people again in some attack?..”

So yeah, how DO you justify IGNORING REALITY? Look around…the Muslims aren’t the reason you’ve been pushed to the outer fringe of civilization, and make not be able to eat by the end of the month.

Killing thousands of people in an ‘attack’??? My God, OPEN YOUR EYES!! We’ve been under attack for 8 years, and millions have died.

Guess what? It’s NOT the *Islamists*!!! It’s your Christian Fascist so-called ‘government’!!!

I just listened to the dvd and it appears to be a typical one side view point. There is a reason why these Muslim hates us and I am sure it is not for some religious affiliation.  It has to do with natural resources, oil.  Why don’t the video show how the UK/US secret destabilize governments in the middle east for the purpose of getting cheap oil.  Behavior like this is bound to get anyone upset.  Also, Israel has a problem in the middle east. I dont know how to resolved the problem but they are an indepedent state, and they should handle their own problems with minimal US involvement.  9/11 is in question…..we dont know for certain if it was a false flag operation.  The mere mention that 9/11 was a false flag operation makes a lot of americans upset, they cannot handle it.  They start calling you names and calling you crazy.  That is all they could do because the facts are not in their side. Do i think there is radical islam…....yes i do.  Do i think that we are approaching the problem correctly, no i dont.

Those were the days when Osama bin Laden used to come up with his usual rhetoric through video messages or he would claim the responsibility of some Terrorist attack carried out in areas of US operations; right before the fixed dates that any development that President Bush would like to orchestrate to make a big bleep on the his US political horizons. May it be the mid terms elections or a troops surge planed for Iraq, etc ,etc; Osama was always there with out fail. But as they say no body runs for ever. Probably this time our friend may not be there because a new chapter in terrorism seems to have been opened.

The new chapter starts with the big savage explosion attack on Marriott hotel in Islamabad as well as CIA brain child Tehrik e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) another set of Osama morons who are busy spreading anarchy in FATA area and they are challenging the writ of Pakistan government; this shifts the epicentre of Terrorism from Afghanistan to the north west frontier province in the heart land near Peshawar in Pakistan.

The attack on Marriot Hotel Pakistan and spread of anarchy in Pakistan are the hallmark in marking the presence of Terrorism abroad from a new location. Plus the distribution of Anti Islamic DVD, “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West,” at home gives out the perfect timings to help the Conservative candidate in his final leap to white House. Osama is not needed any more. Soon we may hear that Sheikh Osama flight to distant stations like some where in southern Sahara Deserts of Algeria.

George W Bush can also claim his victory that Iraq as well as Afghanistan are now the free and enlightened countries.

In each group you will find a few nuts and haters who spew very ugly destructive speech. You can find a sample of that among the Muslims and you can a also find a sample of that among the jews here in Brooklyn or in Israel where some rabbis and politicians spew hate and prejudiced speech against the Arabs and are calling for their death and destruction. These jewish writings and speeches are expexactly copied and modified from what the Nazis used to say about the jews??!!
So, you can sherry pick and make a film or CD about any group which induce fear and hatred toward that group.

“O Dar,

I would suspect that most of these people are Dominionist Christians and not Jews as you suggest, at least if they are Americans.  American Jews are mostly liberal, and they don’t take kindly to the notion that if they don’t accept Jesus they will go to Hell.  Also they tend to be smarter than average Americans and Israelis, in that they realize that Israel is currently headed down a slow path that leads to self destruction, and they aren’t all that keen on seeing Israel destroy itself, let alone contributing to the process.  Most Zionists are either Israelis or stupid American Dominionist Christians.  Doesn’t make them any less dangerous, but it helps to know what you are up against if you want to have any hope of combatting it effectively.”

——

While I agree about the important role that Christian Evangelical nutjobs, as well as the occasional Arab Christian/former Muslim, play in Islamophobia, it doesn’t change the fact that, with maybe the notabler exception of Robert Spencer (who is Catholic), most of the leading “intellectuals” of the hate-mongering and war-mongering towards Islam and the Middle East are Jewish Zionists.

Christian Evangelicals are not primarily concerned with this mythical “Islamic threat”, except in so far as it threateneds their precious Israel. Their hatred and calls for war are just extensions of their wider crazy Apocalyptic world-view.

Former Muslims (like that clown Shoebet) and Arab Christians are important as tools to show off at meetings and the like, but they are marginal in the main-stream discussion.

But Zionist Jews like Pipes and Horowitz and Dershowitz and Wlfowitz and Perl and Ledeen and Kagan and Krystal and Lieberman, as well as Emerson (I think) are imprtant, and they are the priomary engine of this calls to hate and war. They are the principal soucre of the CHristian Evangelical’s talking points.

In decades past America, this type of hatred or war-mogering towartds Islam or Middle Easterners didn’t exist. At most, people had a typer of hollywood cartoonish stereotype of Islam or Middle Easterners, but beyond that it was pretty harmless.

But among Jewish Zionists, this has been there for a while. It just took Bin Laden to enable them to spread it more widely.

So I disagree with you, this can’t be put at the feet of Christian Dominonists. As I said, Islamophobia is basically a Jewisj Zionist creation.

Just as I hope radical Republicans will be marginalized by the U.S. population, I hope Muslims will marginalize and render harmless the radical Muslims.  Of course the U.S. could help if the U.S. stopped trying to rape the entire world.

Yes, but one wonders why organizations like the Hudson Institute would publicly endorse a DVD put out by such a shadowy non-profit like the Clarion Fund.

Maybe someone should ask the Hudson Institute about the Clarion Fund?  If they are endorsing the film, they must know a lot about them.

Surely, the Institute considers the reputations of its fine fellows like “ Scooter” Libby,  Robert Bork, and Herbert London before it gives such endorsements.

an excellent film. Seen it several times (first time when it was released a few years ago). Does a great job of providing historical background and significance to the threat of radical Islam, and achieves this in quite an even-handed and fair way. The extremist threat is an important issue to discuss, so why not bring it back into the debate?

Obsession was put out on Region 1 DVD (USA & Canada only) by a companny called Peacearch Entertainment (on their Trinity Home Entertainment label). I found myself asking the same questions as has anyone unfortunate enough to have seen it. I found myself diving online to learn who was responsible for this one after noting the “(c)2006” declaration at the end of the credits roll without anyone being named; the trail finally stopped at the ill-administered Clarion Fund website. (I’m a webmaster, so I could tell how shabby their site was.) Meanwhile, I guess Clarion couldn’t get enough Peacearch cash from retail DVD sales, so…

But then, if I were a DVD entrepreneur, I’d had shown these guys the door.

The movie largely consists of clips of radical muslims speaking in their own words about their ideology and plans for the West. Regardless of who distributed the film, these issues are important and need to be confronted! It’s not a surprise that CAIR is trying to attack the messenger, instead of tell the truth about their radical agenda. This is a very serious issue. And yes, it should be on the agenda for both presidential candidates, the threat has not gone away. It only takes one attack to slip through for an unthinkable disaster to happen again, like 9/11.

The most important thing, (behind the Jewish/Israel connection) is that it is a typical 501, so-called ‘non-profit’ organization. Between them and the 527’s, they’ve managed some serious damage in the past. That’s what sunk Kerry.

Meantime…Purplewolf, be sure to give us the scoop on the DVD. It scares the shit out of me that this stuff is coming by way of the main stream media…in the newspaper for Christ’s sake. How much more Orwellian does it get?
