One sign of the nation’s shaky economy can be seen in the growing numbers of newly homeless people forming “tent cities” around the U.S. The rise of these encampments is being attributed partly to the foreclosure crisis in the housing market, and the newest economic developments aren’t likely to ease the situation.

AP via MSNBC:

From Seattle to Athens, Ga., homeless advocacy groups and city agencies are reporting the most visible rise in homeless encampments in a generation.

Nearly 61 percent of local and state homeless coalitions say they’ve experienced a rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007, according to a report by the National Coalition for the Homeless. The group says the problem has worsened since the report’s release in April, with foreclosures mounting, gas and food prices rising and the job market tightening.

“How about the whole capitalist system sucks?”

Yeah, just look at how bad the transition to capitalism has been for China’s economy.

KDelphi, my intent is not to blame the ‘victim’, but to point out that the blame is being misplaced on the mortgage crises, when unemployment and illegal immigration are more likely the cause.  I would be willing to bet that if you cruised through the classifieds for the areas those tent cites are popping up in, you would find no shortage of available rental units, at prices well below what most entry level purchasers were paying on their mortgages.

Leefeller,  I thought you were confusing me with the wrong political demographic, so guess I misread your intention. I stand by my assertion though, and I gave up on trying to talk to God as a teenager.  Should I ever come to the realization that I am wrong and there is in fact a god up there overseeing all of this, I sincerely hope he/she comes back to earth in human form again, so we will all have a chance to kick his ass.

frank—just what i would expect from the NY Daily News. http://www.therealestatebloggers.com/category/rental-units/

Try that. It encourages people like you to buy down and rent for outrageous prices, to take advantage of others’ misery.

You can find stats to say about anythign you want these days. This is a great market—if yu have no conscience.

Your “blame the victim” culture wil eventually bring an end to unregulated cauitalism, and I, for one, will rejoice.

BTW, I’ve got some Oceanfromt property in Arizona—right down ther with those conservatives you like so much. Want to bite?

Frank,

My post was in reference to (another thread, but did not realize it) Yellowbird or purplegirl? They stated they were watching a religious channel on the Telie, which said god had caused the housing collapse and it had something to do with the illegals?  I will update you next time I talk to god, I find it hard to get in, usually Bush and the Pope keep him or her busy.

Leefeller, there is no god, sorry.

‘Whatever’, where did you come up with bigotry from my post? The problem of illegal immigrants cramming into housing at levels well above the intended occupancy is so rampant and well documented, that it has lead to a spate of new zoning rules passed in many localities, designed to prevent over-occupancy of buildings.

This is common sense, dummies. If you are employed and have the income to get approval for a mortgage, you sure as hell can afford to rent a small apartment, which is nearly always available for less in this market.  So if your mortgage rates rise and you can’t keep up, and you lose the house, you are not going to end up in a tent if you are still employed.

And before anyone pipes up about a lack of available rental housing…think again. The vacancy rates for both rental and non-rental housing is near an all time high, currently 9.6 percent, which is why home prices are dropping and many rental units are offering move-in incentives like first month free, etc.

So do not blame people in tents on the housing market.  If we have lots of people who can’t rent an apartment because they lost their job, that is an unemployment problem, not a housing one.  If we have lots of illegal immigrants who can’t get a lease or housing assistance because they are undocumented, that is an immigration problem, not a housing problem.

This is common sense people, not a political perspective.  It seems that at least one newspaper is covering the new immigrant tent cities:

Frank needs to take his bigoted head out of his privileged ass.  As someone who has been working to help people with limited resources for my entire professional life, I can tell you that poverty springs from every ethnic background.  Citizenship is no guarantee of the American Dream and loss of that dream is only a few paychecks away for an alarming number of hard-working Americans of EVERY color and culture.

So average American families who couldn’t quite keep up with rising mortgage payments on a home are suddenly unable to afford to rent a even a small apartment that costs significantly less,  as opposed to living in a tent? Sorry, I am a little dubious about the claims of this article.

Unless we are talking about illegal aliens who were crammed into a house belonging to their documented relatives and now can’t fit in a smaller apartment, I don’t think we can tie this to the housing crises in a significant way.  Unemployment is a major factor, for certain,  but I would bet that illegal immigration is a bigger factor than falling home prices and rising mortgage rates.

The entire country will be one huge bushville soon.

This is no accident. Their goal is to destroy the middle class and they are masters at doing just that.

They can’t control happy, prosperous citizens.
Only fearful, penniless citizens who’ll beg for any scraps thrown their way.

They have a trillion dollars to bail out all these firms, but not one penny for universal health care.

The “Shock and Awe” campaign started with the biggest lie in world history: 9/11.

We ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.

Bye, bye, Amerikan Pie.

Sorry, people, but some of us who’ve read history have seen all this before. You act shocked, but you’re merely ignorant, self-absorbed spoiled brats who believe what’s on TV.
Tent cities aren’t new. Soldiers from the Revolutionary War to WWI had tent cities. They were only standing up for gov’t. to keep its promises. We, the people founded this country. But we created a big, tempting pile of money that some folks can never get enough of.
Al Quaida is a lie. 9/11 is a lie. Free enterprise is just welfare for the very rich.
A very small percentage of the population fought in 1776 against the same economic domination the GOP is pushing now. Then it was the King and the “nobility”, now it is the one percent that owns half the country. Bush’s dad gets it. He has been buying up newly released public lands dirt cheap while JR. has been spending three trillion dollars killing innocent Iraqis.
The oil companies, chemical companies, big Agriculture, big pharma and the banks are taking you all to the death chamber. Not the first time, either. Fool you once, shame on them—fool you twice, shame on you. Now four thousand of your kids have died for NOTHING in Iraq. You should know by now some people don’t believe in America. Those of us who still do and always will must take our country and our world back from those who can make no money without us. They will fight hard for their lies and for their privilege but we cannot lose. It is either a government of the people or it is not. It’s up to you.

Would you like to wish on a star? Carry moonbeams home in a jar? Be better off than you are? Amerika can thank the Republicans for this mess. Almost exclusively. The last two years of a Democratic Congress doesn’t count. The last two years of a Democratic Congress has been mostly Repub-lite. Remember the ‘Great Reagan Revolution’? Yup, seems mostly like a frickin nightmare now. Let’s see the neo-fascists “deregulate” Amerika out of post 9/11 early twenty first century economic depression. Karl Marx is laughing his dead ass off right about now. So much for a “laissez-faire” market.

This simply shouldn’t be happening in one of the richest countries on earth. It doesn’t matter that the economy’s slowing, this just shouldn’t be.
