After days of insisting that she is ready to be president but not ready to answer questions, the McCain campaign announced that Sarah Palin will, at last, be interviewed by the dreaded media. Why ABC’s Charlie Gibson was specifically chosen for the honor, we don’t know, but he’ll be flying to Alaska to sit down sometime this week with the VP nominee.

AP via Time:

Palin, the surprise pick of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, has been giving campaign speeches alongside the Arizona senator since the GOP convention but has not sat down for an interview about her views.

A McCain-Palin adviser says an interview was offered to ABC’s Charlie Gibson several days ago and that they expect it to happen in the latter part of the week in Alaska. Palin is the governor of Alaska and is expected to return home at midweek after more joint appearances with McCain.

To Aegrus,

Yes I stand by my statement.

It’s the same article (even all over the internet) with Geo.Steph. of ABC that Obama (the off-script you mumble, off-pedestal you fumble candidate” mis-spoke and called himself a muslim.  Surely, if you watch news you could have seen this yourself.

But hey, it’s been fun… yeah right, (like a tooth extraction), but I think I’ll move on. This convo. is getting old and really going no-where.  I mean you are sold on your opinions as I am.  In Washington they call it “dead-locked”.

Take care and keep up the good fight!
Peace.

Interesting reading this thread of conversation.  Everyone appears agreed that the ABC interview will be a set-piece of softballs for Palin and that most of the electorate will continue to fall for the idea that she somehow makes McCain more appealling as a president.  However, the other stream of thought being batted about seems to be which candidate is lying or flip-flopping.

I’m not too enamoured with a number of things said over the recent convention period (notwithstanding all the mindless ad hominem attacks) ... let’s pick one from each candidate:

1.  McCain says in his acceptance speech that he will not leave it to some unfortunate future generation to solve today’s problems.  He also says that he will continue to cut taxes and will continue to spend on war as much or more than W has ... this is an Oxymoron that the press should call him on (ha ha! The press!).  There is no way that all that spending wihtout taxation is going to do anything other than grow the already mountainous debt burden some “future generation” will be paying off.

2.  Obama is brave enough to go into the O’Reilly lion’s den ... then capitulates on the malarky that the “surge has been success beyond our wildest expectations”.  The surge can only have worked if it achieved it’s objectives.  These were clearly listed at the time.  They were to give the Iraqi government time to make advances in 18 areas.  None, I believe, have been achieved.  At the same time, the lack of remaining targets coupled with the Sunni’s changing tack and accepting bribe money to stop fighting has resulted in a return to levels of violence lower than in 2006-2007 (but still too high).  So what success?  Well done Barry ... the story is now agreed that McCain was right when everyone else was wrong.

What a shocker ... the rest of the world (I’m not American) is now sh*ting itself that U.S. voters are going to monumentally screw up again to the detriment of the whole world.  I fear that four more years of this environment will break something seriously ... the world economy, the environment, the peace that many lucky people experience ... who knows?

Sue, you say “an ABC interview.” Which one?

All I’ve seen Obama say is taxing the middle-class would be disastrous in these times, which is somewhat true. Obama’s tax policy increases after-tax income for 90% of Americans by 5%.

How is that a flip-flop? Why don’t you cite sources? How do you expect anyone to believe a thing you say when you make bold misstatements?

To Aegrus,

Obama just flipped again on the so-called Bush tax cuts that you accuse McCain of sticking to.

Well, Obama admitted on an ABC interview that “rescinding the Bush Tax Cuts during a recession would be disasterous to the economy. So he’s going to delay tax cuts on the wealthy and see how thing go.

He proposes spending 300 billion if he becomes president and if he can’t rely on revnue from raising taxes on the rich than he will be adding to the deficit big time.

Again I say to you, Obama just another politcian doing and saying anything to become president, and sometimes sticking his foot in his mouth to boot!

You really need to stay tuned to current events and stop being so critical of others opinions.

Sue, you’re full of rhetoric, and light on facts. Just saying something doesn’t make it so. What has Obama switched positions on because I can name dozens of things both McCain and his veep have lied about.

Apparently, you don’t have interest in actual information, and would rather repeat lies. Go ahead. Lie yourself into a stupor, Sue. Show me where the flip-flops are for Obama. I probably know exactly what you’re going to say right now, and why they are all bunk.

Your opinion is worth less and less every post. McCain is a lying, belligerent fool who is completely unpredictable and has admitted several times he has no knowledge of the economy. He doesn’t vote for veterans, he doesn’t vote for renewable energy. What does John McCain do other than tow the party line?

Obama sends money back when sent from lobbyists. No one is going to be perfect, but it is fundamentally wrong and foolish to equate a campaign run by lobbyists to one who won’t accept money from corporate or federal lobbyists. That is a really, really far stretch that you cannot defend.

Why don’t you tell me why John McCain’s extension of Bush’s tax cuts is good for the economy? Explain to everyone how we can balance the budget by cutting out the earmarks that make up less than 10% of government spending (And which Palin says she’s against while asking for more money per capita than any other state in America!!!!).

Explain to me why you support a candidate who lacks any leadership credentials! Why should I, or anyone else, vote for a man who feels the economy is fundamentally strong during the eighth consecutive month of job losses and the highest unemployment percentage in years? How is John McCain going to assist legislation to create jobs? What is he going to do for me or you? NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!`

To Aegrus,

Please don’t be so one-sided.

Obama too has changed his position (flip-flopped) numerous times.
They all do!  It’s called in some instances “pandering” or in some cases they decide they will fare better with the voters if the times change from where they were to current happenings.

As far as “corporate lobbyist’s”, Obama has his share of special interests and large corporation lobbying and funding his campaign too!

Oil companies for one.  He don’t receive donations directly from them, but from their employees and families.  Same thing.

Again, they all do!

Obama is not innocent of a lot of the accusations he accuses his opponents of.

Quit trying always to make him exceptional.  He is not!

He can be relied upon to toss Palin a bunch of cream puff questions, with a few that will appear hard just to keep some credibility. This will not be the kind of real questioning of her background and positions that is sorely needed…

Next stop…an appearance or two at Faux News, and appearances on Glen Beck and Bill O’Reilly…who will again prop her up with softball pitches that she will be able to hit out of the park.

Our national media continues to be a terrible disappointment and a sad excuse for a free and questioning 4th branch of government.

I used to love listening to the news, and now I can barely stand any of the cable news shows for more then a couple of minutes before I scream and change channels.

If you believe in polls, Obama has the WOMEN and YOUTH vote behind him…they are the part of the “demographics” which make the decisions on family budget/health care issues (women) and are the future of our country (youth).  If they show up to the polls in significant numbers, Palin will have been a nice experiment and diversion for the Repugs but, hopefully, all flash/no substance…we await Oct. 2nd to see how this truly plays out. Charles Gibson is a mild-mannered suit who will appeal to those who want a lap dog interview.

I have all the confidence in the world that Sarah will do just fine.  She appears to have an intelligent head on her shoulders.  She has been through debates and interviews before so she is not new to them.

I can understand why the McCain campaign is holding off as long as possible.  The press as we all now is not the best people to divulge too much to since most of them tend to spin most anything they get their vulterous little hands so out of control just to satisfy their biased selves.  It’s really pathetic.

That’s why you see Obama stammering over his words during an interview.  He is being ever so careful in choosing the correct words fearing any little slip of the tongue can be a huge game changer.  Nothing wrong with that mind you.

They all have much to fear when the press is involved.  But, I think that if they stick to their convictions, be true to themselves, they can come out the victor.

Keep the vultures hungry Sarah!
Disappoint the hell out of them.
Keep their blackberris and itchy computer fingers idle.

ABC is owned by Disney, which is nearly as right-wing as Rupert Murdoch.  It’s been harder for The Mouse to move the network’s news to the slant than it was for RM to make Fox Noise a propaganda org, but it’s been moving, at least enough to keep people there scared.  ABC News is now a Mickey Mouse organization.

If you asked me which of the 3 nets Palin would have gone to for an “interview” I would have said ABC instantly.

I would NEVER have expected her to face a REAL interviewer like Jim Lehrer or Terry Gross, but only a friendly schmoozer who will pitch nothing but soft-balls and pre-arranged “tough” questions.

It’s nothing but a propaganda act.  If she REALLY had the courage and spine they attribute to her, she’d do what Obama did when he went on O’Reilly: Go beard the lion of the other side in his den.

But no Republican EVER does that.  They just whine when Democrats won’t deal with Faux Noise.

Over the week end I was “discussing” the election with my 87-yr-old stepmother.  In her usual folksey manner she told me that Obama was a Muslim and had a 17-yr-old pregnant daughter and can’t make up his mind and therefore changes what he says daily   -  and, (amazingly) “He’s not even white”.
I think this typifies the average member of today’s electorate - basically detached most of the time and easily swayed by the latest tabloid “revelation”.  So I second the earlier thought (above) that it’s the Clampetts deciding this election.  The debates won’t matter unless there is some gaff that the media jumps on.  It will be Faux Snooze and Limpy and UnderHandity telling those desperate folks back home how to vote (the voters that really are grasping their guns and religion).
Bottom line: the conservatives will get more tax breaks for business, resist any changes to the health care oligarchy, and the US will still be in Iraq 4 years from now - at $10 Billion a month.
Maybe this is the way Hillary gets her REAL chance - in 2012.

Excuse me people ... but what makes anyone think that there will be any backlash or problem with not talking to the press except in heavily controlled situations?  Hasn’t the current President proven that with the current Conservative supporting or passive press, there is no pushback on this approach.

The current president has had fewer press conferences than any other president in the TV era.  When he has taken questions they have been in controlled situations primarily from friendly reporters and almost exclusively softballs.  He even hired a fake reporter to make sure he was served up the softball of his choice in press conferences ... presumably just in case the press weren’t reading the ‘talking points’ they were supposed to be talking about ahead of time.

We can expect that the Republican public relations people will have no trouble keeping Palin from any serious questioning in the 2 months available prior to the election.

I bet Gibson doesn’t ask “How does cutting 62% of the special education budget in Alaska show your support for American families with children who have special needs?”.

At some point, Palin *will* have to face the press (plural), just like Hillary Clinton and everyone else (...er, right? I’m clinging to sanity here), although no doubt they’ll have been paid or threatened into throwing only slow pitches, and allowing her to bloviate at length after each one.

[Gosh, I’m just soooo confused!  Is sexism the new feminism, or vice versa? Jon Stewart put together some intelligence on this question last week from Karl Rove et al., then & now.  Priceless, and do we ever need some laughs…]

I hope there will be no escape when she’s on stage with Joe Biden, facing actual national and foreign policy questions.  Joe will pull no punches - he can’t, that would be sexist! (Er, right?) - and it will be a thing of beauty to see Palin, the canting, tiny-minded, provincial prom queen, contrasted with the fifth most senior member of the Senate, chair of the Foreign Relations committee, vice-chair of the NATO assembly, etc. etc.  And if Biden can’t go toe-to-toe with Palin on “personal story,” no one can.

But yeah, until then, it’ll be all about her family (and their Clampett-style charisma, the existence of which, like gravity, I must accept because I detect its consequences and not the phenomenon itself), her Christian Taliban values, her climate-change denial, her passion for the petroleum industry, and alllll her experience in public office (see the open letter from Anne Kilkenny: http://www.thepresidentialcandidates.us/about-sarah-palin-a-letter-from-anne-kilkenny/741/ ).  Not to mention her education (which no one will)...was that five colleges in six years to get a B.A., or six colleges in five years?

I keep thinking of these lines from Obama’s inspired and inspiring acceptance speech in Denver: “...this election has never been about me. It’s been about you.” Oh, the irony now, when the likes of John McCain and Sarah Palin are spinning their campaign as a cult of…personality.

Don’t miss Judith Warner’s excellent column from the September 4 NYT, which starts like this:
“It turns out there was something more nauseating than the nomination of Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate this past week. It was the tone of the acclaim that followed her acceptance speech.”
