Gustav aftermath

Aftermath: Hurricane Gustav caused chaos in Jamaica and Cuba late last week and into the weekend but was downgraded to a tropical storm late Monday after reaching Louisiana’s shoreline. In this photo, a car drives along Canal Street in downtown New Orleans Monday night.

As it turned out, New Orleans dodged the full brunt of Hurricane Gustav, which had substantially weakened by the time it reached the Louisiana shoreline on Monday, but Hurricane Hanna still looms as a potential threat to the nation’s East Coast.

The New York Times:

Forecasters had worried that Hurricane Gustav, which slammed into Cocodrie, would arrive as a Category 4 storm with far more powerful winds.

Once the storm turned out to be less devastating than had been forecast, some officials fretted that they would face criticism for calling for a major evacuation. But with memories of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 still fresh, they said they had no regrets.

“There will be some criticism, potentially,” said Dick Gremillion, the director of emergency operations in Calcasieu Parish, La. “But particularly after Katrina, I don’t think anyone expects us not to do everything that we can to make sure no one is hurt.”

“We are not taking any chances in terms of people’s lives,” Mr. Gremillion added.

You’re right here Fahrenheit, (the ‘allowed back’ and Nagan telling them to get their butts out). But, this is how they exploit the disaster capitalism that Naomi Klein so well presents. It’s a damned if you do, and damned if you don’t, when one is dealing with any attempts to second guess Mother Nature, and specifically when NO provisions are in place to deal with what can be accepted as inevitable. (Hurricanes). I haven’t checked yet, to see how Cuba faired, (receiving the larger brunt of it) but THEY have a system in place, which nearly always protects everyone. They move the people, (and their belongings) to higher ground upon approach, and when the event passes, they move them back. By now, it’s a perfected routine.

Not so here…and of course we know why.

I wonder how many of the evacuees will not be allowed back.  The government wasn’t totally successful at clearing some of the neighborhoods after Katrina and those pesky coloreds and poor white trash just came back and wouldn’t leave.  So now maybe they got most of them out; after all, some of those properties are worth a fortune and the developers don’t want to have to pay too much.  This way they get them for nothing along with extended tax deferments for their investment in the ‘hood.  Nagan said this was the, “mother of all storms, so get your butts on out”.  Hmmmmm?
