Mass exodus: Residents prepare to leave New Orleans from a Greyhound Bus and Amtrak station on Saturday. A mandatory evacuation has been ordered.

New Orleans residents began fleeing the city this weekend in preparation for Hurricane Gustav to hit the Louisiana coast just three years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the region. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin underscored the severity of the situation, telling locals they had to evacuate starting at 8 a.m. Sunday but would be wise to start earlier.

CNN:

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city beginning 8 a.m. Sunday but urged residents to consider escaping “the mother of all storms” before then.

“You need to be scared,” Nagin said of the Category 4 hurricane tearing along Cuba’s western coast. “You need to be concerned, and you need to get your butts moving out of New Orleans right now. This is the storm of the century.”

And McCain is spared the embarrassment of having Bush and Cheney hug him on prime time tv.

The hurricane was a God send for the republicans saving them the embarrassment of having a convention since they have absolutely nothing to celebrate.  How do you celebrate 8 years of hell?  What a relief for Bush and Cheney who don’t even have to make an appearance now.

Well, I’m not so sure that this has really been a disadvantage for the Repugs. They’ve cut back on their convention agenda, but could it be that they didn’t have anything to begin with?

It’s already been announced that Dick Bush (both of them) will not attend the convention because of Gustav. Sounds like a nice excuse to me, since Cheney hadn’t been slotted to speak anyway. Sounds real ‘convenient’ to me. Since when did such an event in NO stop anything important to them. (like a golf game).

As for Blackwater…seems I heard that this time around, they’ve actually got their National Guard back. I don’t know if it will keep Blackwater from showing up anyway, with their sniper folks. They certainly were prepared the last time. Guess we’ll see. At least people are getting out now, instead of being trapped like the last time, when Blackwater was there to make sure they *DID NOT* GET OUT. Oh yes, that’s the part we never read about…the numbers of people trying desperately to escape, only to be prevented from doing exactly that..by…the Blackwater folks.

Fadel,
Apparently God lacks cruise missile technology for weilding his thunderbolts.  He wanted to take out McCain and the republicans in St Paul and hit New Orleans instead.  The heavenly house and senate won’t approve the expeditures for cruise missile tech.  God has to smite his enemies with the Old Testament hit-or-miss fire and brimstone.  Oh well, New Orleans had a hell of a run.

“Seems NOLA has a problem when ever McCain has a personal event. Katrina his birthday celebration with W. His convention may be marred by th eshadow of Gustov. Is God trying to tell Mac something, or US?
Hopefully this one weakens or misses the region.
But i fear many people are still let to their own devices.”
===================================
Purple Girl, I am sorry to hear about your bad experience with Katrina three years ago, and I further understand the connection you try to establish between nature’s fury and a message that God might be sending us.

Though my religion commands me to disbelieve in bad omens or superstitions, I am going to go against my religion and support what you are wondering about. In this vein, I want to recall that 9 months into the neocons administration of G. Bush’s first term, our country was hit by the tragedy of 9/11. Then again, 9 months into Bush’s second term, we were struck with tragedy of Katrina. Then while the neocons are preparing for their convention, to prepare for another evil administration under McCain, we have the prospect of Gustave bringing tragic destruction!

As I look at this, I am wondering whether all these things are just mere coincidences! And my conclusion is that either God (or nature if one believes they are two different things)is trying to send us a message or a wake-up call! One thing is certain though; and that is that the Republicans are a bad omen for our country!

An accredited sniper school?  Is the public the enemy now?  Blackwater is a bigger problem than I ever realized.

I had to bug out when Ivan rolled in- 3rd day of a 6 day vacation. He waited until the morning that it would possible hit NOLA to ‘recommend’ people start leaving the city.10,000 conventioneers were there- emergency services type convention, and he waited.
We got home to MI after hiring a limo for 260.00, taking the run up to Baton Rouge and barely making it on a plane out. We Sat on our couch that night and watched Ivan roll into the area. It did not devastate NOLA that time- but it did the Next, Katrina. After our experience I can tell you the mayor, the gov nor anyone else knew what they were doing. We asked our Hotel- A Merritt- what their plan was to help it’s guests should this be a direct hit. Said they’d help us get out of the city- called some places, found nothing until much later.I made calls and found the limo which came in an hour! It’s not just the Gov’t which failed people, it was also the Tourist industry.
I was amazed by the devastation caused by Katrina, but I was not surprised by the lack of preparedness or planning by the Mayor or the State Gov.
Seems NOLA has a problem when ever McCain has a personal event. Katrina his birthday celebration with W. His convention may be marred by th eshadow of Gustov. Is God trying to tell Mac something, or US?
Hopefully this one weakens or misses the region.
But i fear many people are still let to their own devices.
