McCain Chooses Palin as Running MatePosted on Aug 29, 2008
Q: What move can steal both a news cycle and droves of Hillary-supporting Democratic voters? A: The McCain campaign announcing Friday, just 12 hours after Barack Obama’s acceptance speech in Denver, that his running mate will be Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

What you are seeing is a loosely scripted, extemporaneous pseudo-play of the American Presidential Campaign. All this claptrap is being acted out based on some central scheming. The idea for McCain is not to win but to keep the election close. Then, it can be stolen and Barack Obama-Joe Biden can assume the Presidency and take the US down the path to a confrontation with the Russia and China (where the real money is), all the while promising a primrose path to egalitarianism, Universal Health Care, etc.
The only way McCain can win is by a landslide, and that’s not going to happen. But if it does, then we can kiss Social Security good-bye, hunker down for a long, long war in the Middle East and watch the country slide headlong into a severe depression. Those are the choices the American Voters are facing.
NB. For those who fear Socialism, take a look at all those unstable European countries like Sweden, Denmark, etc, and consider the Capitalist’s Vision Statement: If everyone chips in a little (taxes) a few can live extremely well. The right-wing axiom for the vision is that, primarily everyone looks out for his or her own interests. In other words, “Hooray for me and to hell with everyone else!” The problem with that is that only the rich are taken into account. If you’re not worth more than $5 million, you, in their philosophy, don’t exist.

I think for McCain’s game the move had to be shocking. Elizabeth Dole, say, wouldn’t be shocking enough.
I don’t think McCain is trying to offer a Republican Hillary. I think he’s trying to be a Republican Zorro.

Inherit The Wind,
I can repeat myself and hope one day it sinks in well.
You are too far steeped in bigotry and fear to have even a modicum of understanding of why I write what I have on this particular thread.
You write\: You (Rus7355) belong to a party that for the last 40 years…. According to you all republicans should personally be held to account for the last 40 years. I trust you see how extremely far fetched that is.
You see, as I have said in the past, its not me or my words you see. You see only a party you both hate and fear. It blinds you terribly! Try reading without injecting your own horribly bigoted bias. Youll see a great deal more.
I pity you.
**************************************
You PITY me for refusing to forget the last 40 years of GOP policy?
You don’t remember the “Southern Strategy”? That was what Nixon called it.
You don’t remember “Law and Order”, Nixon’s speeches?
You don’t remember Ronald Reagan’s mythical “Welfare Queen driving a Cadillac”, a woman who was never found?
You don’t remember George H.W. Bush’s “Willie Horton” ad that catigated Dukakis for a work release that resulted in a murder despite RR having done the same thing with the same result in California?
You don’t remember George W. Bush’s push-poll in 2000 in South Carolina to sink McCain “Would you still vote for McCain knowing he fathered an illegitimate Black girl?”
You don’t remember Florida’s SecState deliberately finding ways to negate registrations in predominantly Black areas in 2000 and 2004?
Or the Ohio SecState doing it in 2004, too?
You don’t remember the dirty ad against Harold Ford (a Black candidate) of a pretty blonde saying “Harold, call me”?
You don’t remember the 10,000 nasty lying racist things that have been said on Faux Noise just this year about Obama and his wife? (like “ObamaMama”)?
I stand by my assertion that for the last 40 years the GOP has played the race card every which way it can, that the GOP is now the party that’s home to racists, and has been for 40 years, that racist Democrats either left the party for the GOP or recanted their earlier racism in word, deed and votes.
Just saying I am “hate-filled” because I find your absurd, false and deliberately twisted “facts” and logic offensive doesn’t make it so.
But I do have to admire your bravery (or naive stupidity) to post here, on an openly and clearly stated progressive blog. I suppose if you wanted posters to agree with you, you’d post on Rush Limbaugh’s or Ann Coulter-geist’s sites. There’s always RedState.com for you.

McCain’s choice for VP is deliberate. The republican party does not want to take office this coming year because it would be much better for them to allow the democrats to take office and attempt to clean up the trillion dollar mess that Mr. Bush has created along with his party.

ROFLMAO!
You belong to a party that for the last 40 years DELIBERATELY sought to be the new home for the Southern dixiecrat racists. Nixon called it “The Southern Strategy” and used the term “Law and Order” as code words for suppressing Black Americans. And you defend a selection of VP based solely on two factors: Her gender and her lock-step right-wing-nut positions.
We have had 8 years of slander, lies, criminal wars, destruction of our civil rights and a trashed economy. We have seen the spouse of the Democratic candidate called “Obama-Mama” and all kinds of other pejorative terms. Both of them have been dressed in in cartoons in INCREDIBLY racist ways and yet, somehow, that’s OK.
Yet somehow, in your twisted mind and logic, I’M the bigot because I don’t accept ANY of the Faux Noise and RNC bullshit at face value. I trust it: I KNOW it’s lies thrown against the wall just to see what sticks.
With all that you’ve posted here it’s hilarious that you DARE to try to claim some civil, decorous high moral ground.
But let me leave on a high note:

I think Mc Cain is a very clever strategist but he may have put himself and the party in a lot of trouble. Brilliant move but wrong pick, I think there are plenty of woman candidates he could have chosen from the Republican Party, that are already known to the public and had a broader range of experience. I also believe that a man with Palins same qualifications and credentials would be laughed at. Republicans especially women republicans are focusing too much on her being a WOMAN making history than they are thinking about this country! I think this is an attempt to marginalize Obama and to gain the Democrats defectors that were lost when Clinton did not get picked for VP. I also think groups like PUMA are strongly misguided and take Clinton’s lose too personal. This is not about you this is about what is best for the nation! I am strongly insulted about Mc Cains blind pick to choose a woman to gain Clintons supports, other than having the same body parts they are nothing alike! I feel that Obama supporters and Clintons supporters have a whole different vibe. Obama supporters pick him for the country while Clinton supporters pick her for her gender, and if you are a Clinton supporter that is jumping on the Republican band-wagon over this stunt shame on you! I feel that Obama supporters and Clintons supporters have a whole different vibe. Maybe you should explain a few things to the fearful and bigoted progressives. Like why we should open our arms to Gov Sarah. Lets see,
Explain why I should support a woman who wants to go to the house of a rape victim and inform them that they cannot abort the bastadized fetus they carry because an unbelievable act of violence was committed against them? Or that they carry a fetus with horrible genetic malformity(downs syndrome) that, despite our best intentions, will be treated like an animal most of it’s life?
Explain why we should not give gays the rights enjoyed by all citizens of our free republic?
Explain why, instead of chasing down the people that attacked the US in 2001, we choose to bomb the shit out of schools and wedding partys in a third world country? And prop up tin pot dictators that wrap themselves in the American Flag and commit atrocities on their citizens?

We have been treated to a side show over the last 72 hours with John McCain’s operatives issuing head-fake after head-fake of disinformation about his choice for VP. It was unseemly and childish but an effective ploy to play the media and change the subject from Barak Obama’s stunning and landmark speech. Finally, he announces his pick and I must say that I find it mindboggling. For months, McCain has been questioning Obama’s experience and then he picks someone whose resume is so thin that she touts being President of the PTA as one of her main qualifications. This is someone who denies global warming, is as anti-environmental as they come, rabidly against women’s reproductive rights, wants creationism taught in school, and is under investigation for using her power as governor to have her former brother-in-law fired. She will not attract any Hillary supporters that care about any feminist issue; perhaps the PUMAs will bite but they number about 500 and were voting against Obama anyway. She does check off two boxes for McCain: a)woman—young, pretty woman and b)controversial enough to dominate the conversation. I think it’s a Dan Quayle type pick and an obvious gimmick. David Gergan said as much last night and all the GOP in my family are livid about it. From a strategic point of view, McCain has given up his one argument against Obama. And what does he get for it? We’ll see how she does but to me she looks and acts like she’s still the mayor of her 9000 population town. It represents a departure from seriousness and will highlight McCain’s age and health issues. Is this woman a credible president? Can you see her sitting across from Putin? Everyone will be asking that question in the weeks to come. We Obama people won’t even have to vocalize it; it’s obvious.

My my this is a lively thread. Let’s see John McCain’s first wife was a beauty model who got disfigured in a car crash, so he through her over and got a second beauty, a beer heiress at that! Now in his latest presidential bid he picks a former beauty queen model to be his vice-president. Do I detect some kind of pattern here?
I do not believe that John McCain picked Sarah Palin in a vain attempt to woo Clinton supporters. No, this is instead, as some have already pointed out, a shoring up of that evangelical extremist base that has become synonymous with the Republican party. Governor Palin’s bizarre views will be tolerated by the intolerant people who believe in them. Her lifetime membership in the National Riffle Association assures those tried and true believers, that the Republican agenda is what it is always been about: Guns, God, and the Gays (who are always coming after YOU!).

Inexperience, inexperience, inexperience!
This choice for Vice President totally disarms any claims against Obama’s youth or ‘inexperience’. For the person set to take over the presidency at a moments notice (with a 72 year old president) where is her international prowess? Let alone her federal legislative track record?
If any democratic woman candidate dared to suggest she could work 50+ hours a week and still be a good mother she would be mincemeat in the talk show/news media; what ever happened to the republican/born again mantra that a woman’s place is in her home with her children? Is the republican Vice President for the Equal Rights Amendment for women? Equal pay for equal work? Does she support state financed early childcare so that other women can follow in her path? What about that infant under 1 year old she is leaving in the care of others?
Does she support the type of childcare funding that will allow other women to leave their mark as well?
I’m all for women in office, so let’s hear her speak to the right wing against all the double standards, and support women leaving infants in daycare to pursue jobs, careers and political ambitions.
Is she going to sweep up the Hillary disaffected? Only if she is Pro-choice and pro-family planning…giving young women (15-21) a full reproductive education early on…(not abstinence only claptrap) and allowing women to make their own choices. Will she support making insurance companies cover birth control pills just like they cover male performance pills like Viagra? Will she support privatizing social security, the main source of most senior womens income? Will she support improved Medicare coverage, the main source of most senior womens medical care? These are the defining questions in 2008 to be a womans leader not just a front for the war machine.

The republicans are throwing this election.
This VP choice was not designed to win voters but to placate the conservative Christian base of the party; that way they’ll be on board when the republicans take back control in 2012.
Assuming the dems win in November, they’ll inherit an economy that is doomed to a catastrophic collapse. We’re headed for an extra strength recession (i.e., a depression) to correct for the last two speculative bonanzas, the dot com bubble and the housing bubble. In fact, a correction may not even be possible at this point. We could be looking at a permanent and severe reduction in the standard of living for most Americans. This is what the next administration will have to look forward to and there’s not a damn thing they can do about it. The housing market is a wasteland, the dollar is a house of cards, and the rest of the world will soon see our phony baloney economy for what it is. When countries like China decide to stop financing our debt and start consuming their own products, then it’s lights out. The broke and unemployed voters will then take it out on the incumbent party, and the republicans will be all set to step right back into power.
Only this time they’ll be taking over the country at a time of universal anger and economic dispair, just the conditions needed to establish a full-scale fascist police state, with massive military build-ups, extensive curtailments of civil liberties and targeting of minority and immigrant populations. Arab-Americans will be hit especially hard.
Earlier today I wrote that this seemed like a stupid choice of VP for the republicans, as no one would vote for McCain when the person who would replace him in case he checked out is so obviously unqualified to take over as president. But the more I think about it, the more it seems that’s exactly what the republicans want, knowing as they do (because they’re the ones who set the stage for it) what kind of economic apocalypse will greet the next president. Had they picked a “cultist” Mormon like Romney or some pro-abortion republican in an attempt to appeal to moderates and independents, they would have lost a good chunk of the religious Right. But with their choice of Palin, they give the Christian Right someone to fawn over, thereby keeping them in the party fold, and also help ensure a loss in November ... only to take back control in 2012 with a vengeance.

Its not a matter of her gender; to my ears some people of both sexes are almost unbearable to listen to (GW Bush being a prime example). Contrast her speaking style with one of the most remarkable women from the Republican side of the tracks I’ve heard recently, Eisenhower’s granddaughter Susan, who spoke at the Democratic convention. Too bad McCain couldn’t have bagged someone like her, but, of course, that would be impossible—any smart woman would be for Obama.

In a national election, most people vote for image. Thus all the chatter about Palin’s character and political positions is irrelevant. What matters is that while Obama, who is supposed to be the reformer, the renewer, played it safe and picked an old White man, McCain went out on a limb, reinforcing his “maverick” logo and neutralizing the “McSame” charge. A risky move, but if he wins, brilliant.

But she’ll also drive a lot of actual conservatives (as opposed to Republicans) away…not necessarily to Obama, just away. Bob Barr might have a better run than expected.
Whether it was or not, it sure looks like a gimmick. And he’s sure gonna look really old and doddering next to her.

When America gets to know her, they will wonder why she is not at the top of the ticket…someday…in the mean time, I hope she pushes for as many VP debates as possible - she steals the show in that venue. This will change the race as much as Clinton’s focus on the economy vs Bush 1. She is the best representative women could have. This is not a political hail mary, but a shrewd and wise choice for VP. It fundamentally changes the nature of this race, and makes the Obama/Biden call for ‘change’ look superficial and weak.

I think Palin is a good choice for McCain; based on her first speech, she speaks well, seems more like a down-to-Earth person than most “experienced” politicians, is attractive (which always helps), and is an outside the box pick that will give independents and disgruntled Democrats a reason to give McCain a second look. Even though that’s all true, Obama’s foreign and economic policies are better for the long-term success and security of the United States. Plus, his “experience” outside of politics makes him BETTER qualified than a 30 year member of the Senate. In my opinion, generally the longer you’re in Washington, the worse you are.

She is a far stronger choice than Biden. In fact, Palin has better credentials than Obama! He’s only been in Congress a few years and spent most of that time campaigning instead of really doing his job. He’s never been an executive and she has.
Now consider this; Obama just got the nomination last night and should be enjoying a bump in the polls today. Instead, the media are all talking about McCain and Palin! Obama’s thunder has been stolen! Splendid move!

McCain just lost the election.
Why? Because he picked a hard-core right-winger as his veep, even more right-wing than she is. She’s a Creationist and an anti-abortionist.
She was mayor of a town of 9,000 people—podunkville, USA, then mayor of one of the smallest states in the union (only 3 electoral votes) for 2 years….way, way up in the frozen North.
McCain needed something to grab Middle Americans, and he went to shore up support with the ultra-right instead. So she’s a woman. BFD. I got news for you: 99.99% of the woman going for Hillary are PRO-CHOICE and will NEVER vote for a “Pro-Life” woman. So there’s 18 million votes locked in for Obama. Last election Bush got 62 million—and McCain just gave 1/3 of them to Obama. Plus, add up all the Black voters from previous elections with all the NEW Black voters going for him, that’s got to be another 15-20 million votes. That means Obama ALREADY has 50 to 60% of the votes.
So now Obama just needs to tie up 25-30 million more votes and he’s The Next President.
Thanks for the freebie, John! Great choice! Governor of a state with 3 electoral votes yer gonna win anyway, from the West like you, and more right-wing than you are. I’d say Dems are good at shooting ourselves in the foot but you are even better!

John McCain will lose, so you better get used to Obama quick. You have a lame duck candidate with no leadership ability. It’s pretty lame & condescending for ‘experts’ & pundits to assume that simply by choosing a pro-choice women,, Dems & other women are going to vote for her ‘just’ because she’s a women….. as if the rest of the issues of the campaign suddenly don’t exist.
Man, I wish I could get on TV and ask some questions of everybody!!!!!!!!
She seems like she can handle herself on the political stage, remains to be seen how it turns out. Dems would do well by not underestimating her and treat her as any other Repub V.P. candidate. If there is anything negative going on, the press will dig it out for 24x7 coverage.

Mr. Credit Card as his Vice President. Why
cant we get interested in Third party

alternative. Go Nader!!!!
My Sentiments exactly. Saw Nader on Democracy Now! and he quoted Eugene Debs about voting for someone you don’t want just because he/she is going to win is throwing your vote away. Voting for someone you support despite the fact that he/she will lose is honoring your voting right. If Nader or McKinney gets enough votes, that will certainly send a message to Washington.
Report thisOne last thing Debs said, as reported by Nader, was that in the end Debs was disappointed in the American people, They could have so much yet settle for so little. Here we are, 60 years after Truman suggested Health Insurance and we’re still scared of Socialism or afraid that the “Rich People” won’t like us anymore.

Now if McCain really wanted to pander to the electorate he should have picked a black woman——but were stuck with Palin! Who is this gun-toting, neo-conservative, ex-beauty queen? If McCain is thinking that he will absorb the disaffected Hillary supporters hes sadly mistaken for this woman is no liberal. And, in one fell swoop, he has killed his argument that Obama lacks experience. Actually he would be hard pressed to find a person with less experience.
But here is a woman who is so anti-abortion that she knowingly had a child with Down syndrome and what an inspiration she is to others in a similar situation. Oh, wait a minute——-let me see she birthed the handicapped child and was back in the governors office three days later——what a sacrifice! Too bad others dont have the same resources to provide nursing care to such affected children. No doubt Governor Palin is using or will use all her PI to secure governmental finance and support for her challenged child as he matures. Down syndrome individuals usually have severe medical problems that require virtually constant care and huge sums of money that ordinary folks just dont have and for Palin to advocated an anti-abortion philosophy based on her own situation is a bit over the top!

The only reason she was picked is to be a media story. She’s a shill for the oil companies despite tough talk against the supreme court. Governor Palin has a son in the Army, Track, about to be deployed to the Middle East. Governor Palin’s husband is an aboriginal Alaskan, what we use to call an Eskimo. Governor Palin opposed the infamous “Bridge To Nowhere” and as the state executive, brought it to a halt. Governor Palin objects to homosexuality, yet she vetoed legislation that would have denied benefits to same sex partners. Governor Palin denounced the Supreme Court ruling for reducing the damages against Exxon-Mobil, for the Valdez oil spill.
Palin being elected Governor of Alaska, was accomplished by defeating both republican and democratic entrenched interests.

McCain is too nasty, too old and has too many senior moments to be trusted with a four-year term in the White House, e.g., doesnt remember the number of houses he owns, thinks Czechoslovakia is still in existence, thinks Iraq borders Pakistani, doesnt know the difference between Sunnis and Shiites, doesnt understand computers, the Internet or economics, sings bomb, bomb, bomb Iran and wants to start WWIII with the Russians over Georgia. It seems to me that the American people should be fed up with oil barons…we already have two in the WH that have literally destroyed this country’s position in the world. Their accomplishments include: starting a war of choice, (just for OIL) shredding the constitution, tax breaks for big oil, tax breaks for the rich at the expense of those less fortunate, ignoring the middle class, ignoring the education system, ignoring the environment, and the list goes on and on. I believe the American women portion of our society will not be so naive as to fall for what McCain is trying to do: pander to all those women voters he needs to win in November. You can bet his choice as VP will lock arms with him to: prevent women from getting equal pay for equal work; work for repeal of Roe Vs Wade; continue the war in Iraq; continue the economic policies that have laid waste to the middle class; continue to pack the Supreme Court with GOP operatives; and the list goes on and on. WE DO NOT NEED FOUR MORE YEARS OF BUSH!! Don’t let his choice of a VP obscure that this is exactly what McCain will bring to the WH, irrespective of ANY choice for his VP!
