Arrests Made in Alleged Obama Assassination Plot

Posted on Aug 25, 2008

A possible plot to kill Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama during his acceptance speech Thursday at the Democratic National Convention was foiled in Denver on Monday night when at least three suspects were arrested, authorities reported.

The New York Times:

The United States attorney’s office in Denver has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon to discuss its investigation. A spokeswoman for the Denver Police Department said that an “aggressive” inquiry had been under way since the first arrest in the case. That occurred during a traffic stop in Aurora, Colo., on Sunday morning, when the police seized firearms and methamphetamine, the authorities said.

It was not clear how well along the possible plot was, or whether the people under arrest had found a way to overcome the heavy security surrounding the Democratic convention. Mr. Obama is scheduled to deliver his speech at Invesco Field, near the convention center.

The United States attorney for Colorado, Troy Eid, seemed to play down the degree of threat that Mr. Obama faced.

“Because this matter is currently under investigation, there is little we can say right now,” Mr. Eid said in a statement. “We can say this: We’re absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado.”

Or they can use crook media to undermine him.  Or they can find some personal weakness and set him up.  Republicans are experts at that.  Liberals have stupidly put all their eggs in one basket, with on hero.  Maybe it is time to get some smarts.

“jobart, unless he was a trained sniper ,which he was not, he would have been lucky to hit the stadium, let alone Obama. Lets blame the gun. your a goof, like lets blame Teddys car for killing Mary-Jo”

Mr. RightWing…
Was Lee Harvey a “trained sniper”?  He worked in a bookstore as a lowly clerk. Yeah, right. How about a FBI mole spying inside the CIA?  Do the research.  Do a J.Edgar Hoover/George H.W. Bush/J.F.K. google.
But that was a conspiracy. This is about folks who should never be in legal possession of lethal weaponry, based on their social-psycholgical perspective !! Associating the Ted and Chapaquidick(MaryJoe catastrophy) is, simply, begging the question and breaks the rules of logical debate & discussion. Therefore, it is not deserving of a response as it has NOTHING to do with the
question(s) at hand. It, in itself, is purely diversionary (and blatently so).
My personal opinion….If you want to do something to a perceived enemy, find a rock and heave it at them.  Then, if they feel as you do, they can heave one back at you.  That way, you both get your point across and NOBODY dies.
Check out guns and violence and death statistics in other developed countries and see where we “stack up” statistically. The problem for most of your like-minded folks lies in the saying, “don’t give me facts, I know what I believe and, facts, only creates complication in those beliefs”.  That’s the underlying reason behind where this great country now finds itself. Fools that can bring back the “chimp” for four more years are the problem. But I, for one, would never advocate violence against such idiots. I’d rather go with the non-violent, attempt/approach to teach them the truth. That’s because I’m a “wussy”, right. Just my two-cents.

A racket can be so big and so traditional that you can’t see it.  You can be stuck in the trees.

The so-called assassination attempts can be setting us up for the biggest stunt to come.

If the stunt is big enough the Republocrat crooks can use is as the pretext for martial lawlessness.

“Second, It never said what kind of rifle it was, nor the effective range, those numbers you just pulled out of the air, and have no bearing on this in the slightest.”

This was cut & pasted from the website where I got the information I used.

CBS4Denver:

CBS4 has learned at least four people are under arrest in connection with a possible plot to kill Barack Obama at his Thursday night acceptance speech in Denver. All are being held on either drug or weapons charges.

CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass reported one of the suspects told authorities they were “going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a … rifle … sighted at 750 yards.”

Law enforcement sources tell Maass that one of the suspects “was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama. He responded in the affirmative.”

The story began emerging Sunday morning when Aurora police arrested 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell. He was driving a rented pickup truck in an erratic manner according to sources.

Sources told CBS4 police found two high-powered, scoped rifles in the car along with camouflage clothing, walkie-talkies, wigs, a bulletproof vest, a spotting scope, licenses in the names of other people and 44 grams of methamphetamine. One of the rifles is listed as stolen from Kansas.

WE absolutely are at opposite ends of the spectrum on this topic and my utilization of “right” vs. right was intended as such.  I see the issue “for” having guns as a “right” side thought process, whether demo or Repug.  And just as you reserve your right to be “for” you should be opened-minded enough to respect mine of “against”.  That doesn’t mean that we must agree on this issue, but we both have a right to have our respective opinions.  Mine doesn’t cause unnecessary harm to man or beast.  Your’s, on the otherhand, does.

Who’s really behind this alleged attack? The worst thing that has happened to this commenter is that I don’t trust anything from MSM, government, or law enforcement since 2000.
I think there’s an agenda behind this news that serves the Decepticons (Republicans).

Given that Biden’s positions on Iraq, Iran, and the rest of the Middle East are so very much to Israel’s liking (Robert Dreyfuss of The Nation says that Biden’s actually WORSE than McCain on Iraq), and since the Israel lobby and the Christian Zionists must have much more confidence in Biden than in Obama, given Biden’s very long track record of giving AIPAC every frickin’ thing it wants, well….

Wouldn’t it be so easy for pro-Israel zealots to pay some destitute ex-con with a “white power” tattoo to do it?

It’s clear that the Israel-first creeps would just a love a President Biden.

They hide behind any identity that suits their rackets and cons.  Neocons were Right-wing Democrats, then Trotskyites, and then Right-wing Republicans.  When you get beneath money, power, status, etc., they did it all for kicks.

really, your going to bring this to gun control jobart? first and foremost it is a right, not a “right” and its one i have fought for. that aside, its not the point of this comment. It states in the article clearly one of the guns was stolen.  Gun control would not have stopped them from getting it. Second, It never said what kind of rifle it was, nor the effective range, those numbers you just pulled out of the air, and have no bearing on this in the slightest.  And “murdering” the deer?  dont allow hunting at all..overpopulation would kill them in a much more gruesome fashion, after killing how several “innocent” motorists.Third, the NRA will not provide them legal representation, as this doesnt involve them in the slightest, the nra supports proper use of guns, not some methed out shooting spree. its not an issue of “cajones”.  And yes, high powered rifles are necessary for a wide variety of reason i will not go into here, even in the civilian population.  the issue isnt the weapons they had in the slightest.  its an unreasonable, and unhealthy bias that was the issue, the same as you are showing toward the gun owning populus by trying to turn the issue to gun control.  The fact of the matter is that these people would have attempted this regardless of what weapon they would have been able to obtain.  Its the mindset of these people, that needs to be changed, until that happens you will see this repeated. take away the guns, and they will find something else to do it with.

That’s what everybody in the area carries around in their trucks - just the basic necessities.

All publicity is good. Did Obama get a bump in the ratings?

I don’t believe a word of this stuff.

At least three amateurish attempts.  Don’t worry Mr. Obama, we will give our lives to protect you (say the Bush Secret Service).

Biden may have been selected because crooks talked Obama into picking him.  He would make a good successor for them if Obama is killed.  Obama has become the perfect sacrificial lamb for the crooks.  If they kill him they demoralize and weaken the left for good.  They will destroy their will to fight.  It is the same with Anwar.  Environmentalists but toomany eggs in a remote basket.  The goal for the crooks is not the oil.  They want to destroy the environmental movement by destroying its will to fight.

Yes,how frightening..a lawless nation is a nation heading for a leader who will return law and order etc…all at the expense of freedom…here we have a hilltop (grassy knoll) a high powered rifle and a cast member named ‘adolph’. The American way should always be by the ballot box not the bullet..no one who truly wants democracy would want to hurt any public servant candidate..here at least Obama is honest in what he wants to do..he does not suger coat it or pin it onto a waving USFlag.May the secret service and all local authorities take this warning seriously and protect him and all candidates from now on.I still have editorials from when the much beloved and maligned President Kennedy was assassinated..they preached that ‘hatred’ in any form must be eliminated from the political arena..agree to disagree sure..then vote..then shake hands and get on with it..may this ominous attempt never happen again..amen

Cyrena

I echo you sentiment about the grocery store. It is easily the most depressing location in our nation.
The tabloids are the best part! The shame is they are as accurate as anything on CNN, Fox, NBC, ect.

I think most of us share your concerns, cyrena. It’s a really difficult thing to say as to how much of a threat Obama is facing, and how seriously people are going to work security. How quickly we forget Texas, and their ‘so-called’ lack of security presence.

“The third arrest took place about half hour later. The suspect was identified as Shawn Robert Adolf, 33, who was arrested in Glendale, near Denver, shortly after leaping from a sixth-floor hotel window, the authorities said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.”

That pretty much sums up that.

I’m not an ‘alarmist’, but what’s up with this:
The United States attorney for Colorado, Troy Eid, seemed to play down the degree of threat that Mr. Obama faced.
•  “Because this matter is currently under investigation, there is little we can say right now,” Mr. Eid said in a statement. “We can say this: We’re absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado.”
The police said they had found two rifles, one with a scope, in the car, along with walkie-talkies, a bulletproof vest and licenses in the names of other people. One of the rifles was listed as stolen from Kansas.

NO PROBLEM!! I mean Troy here is ABSOLUTELY CONFIDENT that there is NO CREDIBLE THREAT to the candidate or the Convention, or the people of Colorado.

So, never mind the rifles with the scope and the walkie-talkies or the bullet proof vest. Just some Aryan Brotherhood dudes with a liter of methamphetamine having a little fun. Just a regular old day in Colorado. Why’s everybody getting all upset.

I mean, according to this…it’s pretty routine…

•  “..Linda Douglass, a senior adviser to the campaign, declined to comment late Monday on reports of the investigation. It is the campaign’s practice not to comment on such reports, which have occurred periodically through the campaign.

Periodically…At least if one happens to be black and running for President, (or driving down a Colorado highway..or any other highway for that matter). It’s just the “Running while black’ thing.

I did see another headline about an earlier assassination attempt a couple of months ago. But, that’s all I saw…a headline, a photo, and a caption. It was while I was at the grocery store, waiting in line for them to take all of my money. But, that’s all I saw, because it was a tabloid, and I never read those even if I do have enough money to pay for them. Anyway, that ‘suspect’ was a pimply faced light-skinned black dude, supposedly from Chicago. I have no idea if it was really an assassination attempt, but it wouldn’t surprise me to find that it was, and only mentioned in a tabloid.

The “right” to bear arms? Just another example to place some sensible restrictions on gun ownership? High powered weaponry, accurate to 750 yards, possessed by white supremists?  Can’t they get closer to that deer that they intended to murder?  Or are they for “hunting” squirrels?  No matter.  This occurence just reinforces the desperate need for an intelligent debate on the whole subject. Let’s see if the NRA has the “cajones” to provide these guys with legal representation. I dare them.
