Anthrax Researcher Threatened Co-Workers as FBI Closed In

Friends’ and relatives’ memories of microbiologist Bruce E. Ivins, who apparently committed suicide last week as he became a top suspect in the 2001 anthrax attacks, differ greatly from the image of him invoked by the stories that have emerged about his threatening behavior in recent months.

The Washington Post:

In March, police officers summoned to a quiet Frederick neighborhood found the 62-year-old microbiologist unconscious in his home. Four months later, he was admitted to a psychiatric clinic after making wild threats against co-workers at the Army research institute where he kept his lab. Then, a week ago, his therapist urgently petitioned a judge for protection from Ivins. She described a man spiraling out of control, making “homicidal threats, actions, plans.”

His death Tuesday from a drug overdose was followed by a revelation even more jarring to those who knew him: a report that Ivins had been implicated in the 2001 anthrax attacks, one of the FBI’s biggest unsolved mysteries and most baffling technical cases. Ivins, a leading expert on anthrax vaccines, was on the verge of being indicted in the case, according to officials familiar with the investigation, and took his life by swallowing a large quantity of acetaminophen.

If Ivins wanted to commit suicide, why didn’t he just take his own damn anthrax? It would have been a lot quicker and surer than using Tylenol #3…

An excellent critique of the “theripist” who is the main source for the character hit job on Ivins.

And first out of the gate is Lefty, who else, again pumpin’ the bottom line for the cover up: “...always knew a wingnut…”  and you can bet there’s a team workin’ overtime to construct the legend to support Levin’s Al Queda connection…just wait: money from a muslin charity, somethin’ - there are formulae for these ops.

In this case he was either the patsy of last resort or part of the op. and getting ready to blow. As for the FBI, anyones guess how many moles are in the mix directing the investigation where the planers need it to go. And, no tellin’ how many players have already been silenced.

Maybe the best way to shut down this madness is an explosive expose on how anyone’s signing up for one of these kinds of ops. is practically signing his own death certificate, delivered the day he gets the ultimate communique: “Sorry, you know too much.” But then where would you get the testimonials?

One more point, when these attacks occurred it was exactly at the time the USA Patriot Act was being introduced to congress. To say the least, these attacks motivated congress to sign it into law without even reading it.

I agree purplegirl. and why would he OD on acetaminophen? Surely a lab technician could have come up with a far better way than Tylenol. Even sleeping pills would have been a better option. And if he was as emotionally distraught as they say he was surely he could have gotten a prescription of Valium or some other tranquiler. If you recall a female lab tech who had retired to Oregon was also on the FBI’s suspicion list. She turned up dead too and again from a suicide. Seems strange that out of the three suspects, two were suicides and one was given a settlement. Also isn’t it funny how the grades of the anthrax drastically changed from military grade to bathtub versions? That sounds to me like a way of pointing suspicion in a direction away from our own military. And who mailed those letters from NJ? Is there any evidence this guy was there when this stuff happened? Was the handwriting on those envelopes a match to his handwriting? The FBI seems rather restrained when it comes to answering any of these questions. Indeed when we consider the magnitude of these events, this has been the most non-publicized and secretive case in US history.

If the FBI closes this case- Then it is the Medias Responisbility to Return to their Previous - far moe honorable- Role as Investigators for the citizens of this Country.
Questions Why was the military studying Anthrax? Planning to Use in some way- already had a vaccine.
Why wre MSNBC and Dachel targeted- Liberal Media, and a opponent of the Invasion of Iraq?
Why was it only in recent months, this scientist went ‘Mad’? If he was psychologically unstable- why didn’t the military catch it to begin with, or fire him when his ‘psychosis’ was apparent.
Why did he not suffer th eeffects of exposure- Wouldn’t someone have noticed this guy in protective hazmat gear mailing these letters?
I think he knew they were out to get him- set him up as th fall guy. But of course the FBI held on to Hatfield just in case their scam fell through with Ivines. How can the FBI focus so intently on a suspect- but not clear another. Seems if this guy could clear himself - they still had hatfield in the tank as a backup Fall guy.
Then of course we have the basic Confession from McCain on the late night show- That HE had info indicating the Anthrax came from Iraq…..The Pitch.That little stunt should be proof positive- this Anthrax attack was an act of against the US by those in power here.
I am ready to place ‘Genocide’ on the list of High crimes committed by this Admin-Esp Cheney.
How many more Third Reich Tactic will be committed before The International community finally says enough- must millions die here Too? The international Red Cross already calls their ‘advance interrogation techniques’ torture, thus War crimes..Could they get the Ball rolling Now? It’s become painfully obvious those in the other two branches of our gov’t are inept or complicit. How much more of our treasure and military might will be allowed to be used against US and the Rest of the World? If they’d like we can make up a Card Deck with the 52 most wanted- in fact we could probably make a few additional decks- Admin, Congress, Military, Corp,....
And these Terrorist WILL be Hunted Down, and any sympathetic nation which aids them in flight or protection WILL Be considered enemies of the US. Hell we would probably be able to finally catch Binny if we just let Cheney lead the way during his flight from prosecution (two Peas in a Pod).Unlike like Georgie boy We mean it When WE say “You can Run, but you can Not Hide”.

•  “And nothing can destroy the confidence of a sensitive and caring professional faster than being unfairly targeted.”

Well Louise, this is certainly not the first time that you took the words right out of my mind, and posted them here. In short, they drove this man crazy. Of that I am convinced. I am 1000% convinced, because I’ve seen it too many times. For anyway to be unfairly accused of something they have not done is traumatic, and for caring professionals, it can and often will send them right over the edge, especially when the harassment is sustained and never ending. When they are NEVER vindicated.

I see this in court cases all of the time, with the government and the corps pulling the same tricks that we are seeing with the detainees, to make sure that cases are never heard because the evidence would come to light, showing the crimes of the perpetrators. It makes me physically ill.

The only thing I might question is whether or not the FBI actually ‘failed’. As you mentioned, in light of Gitmo and all the rest, I’m more inclined to see it as purely intentional.

There was a time when I might have seen such actions as an anomaly. It isn’t. This type of stuff has become so widespread it’s like a silent epidemic, so similar to so many other societies that have come under the control of a totalitarian regime.

It makes me sick.

Obviously, this guy was a patsy, scripted to take the fall…did anyone see the clip of McCain on Letterman ten days after the Anthrax attack saying he heard it might be from Iraq?  The Anthrax Operation was crucial to catapulting us into Iraq, coming on the heels of 9/11 was no accident.  Do you really think Cheney et al got so lucky that a random scientist who wanted to make money on a patent played right into their Iraq plans?  Like I always ask people what are the chances that J.Edgar Hoover’s enemies, who he hate with a purple passion, JFK< MLK, and RFK were all murdered by random assassins within a five year period?  Who gets that lucky, the same with the Anthrax and 9/11, it all dovetails too neatly.  Draw your own conclusions becuase we will never be told the truth.

This story stinks on so many levels. I work as a hospital nurse, and I had numerous patients when I was in the U.S. who tried to overdose on Tylenol. It’s almost impossible to kill yourself with the stuff, even the kind with codeine (which is sold over the counter here but needs a prescription in the U.S.) Acetaminophen is relatively benign as long as you don’t have liver damage, and codeine tends to make people vomit because it’s irritating to the stomach. This “suicide” story makes as little sense as Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald because Ruby (the gangster) was such an outraged patriot who got upset at Oswald for assassinating JFK.

Sounds like what happened to Frank Olson who also worked at Ft. Detrick bioweapons lab back in the 50’s. “Olson was dosed with LSD without his knowledge, subsequently suffering severe paranoia and a nervous breakdown. The CIA sent him to New York to see one of their psychiatrists, who recommended that Olson be placed into a mental institution for recovery.
On his last night in Manhattan, Olson purportedly threw himself out his tenth-floor hotel room window, dying on impact.[2]” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Olson  also: http://www.frankolsonproject.org/ Olson’s body was exhumed and forensic analysis found that he had been hit with a blunt object prior to his “jump”. The family sued and won a settlement from the CIA.

The James Forrestal “suicide” was also in question.

“Many contend that he was driven to depression and suicide because of months of hounding by federal investigators.”

“Almost everybody . . . believes that he had absolutely nothing to do with Amerithrax.”

~~~
Clearly contradicting the observations of the psychiatrists.
Strange what fear can do to the normal mind.
But that’s something the “bad” guys are well aware of, which is why they use fear as a weapon. And anyone who’s been following the horror of Gitmo and Bush authorized torture knows how easy it is to find a professional “shrink” who will cooperate in destroying the malleable mind. And nothing can destroy the confidence of a sensitive and caring professional faster than being unfairly targeted.
The FBI failed utterly on this one, and they needed a scapegoat. End of story.
I wonder, do you think they’ll ever bother getting around to creating a motive?
Probably not. Why amplify their failure with a plausible and believable motive? That really would highlight seven years of wrong-headed incompetence, right?
When the Atlanta Olympics were bombed the FBI went after some poor schmuck who never recovered any of the life he lost and the real bad guy was on the loose and bound to do more damage. With all the bad press the FBI got during the republican led era for Ruby Ridge, Waco among others had them soft pedaling likely targets of the extremist religious right psycho’s just to get a collar and close a case by picking on some poor civil service employee characterizing them as going postal in slow motion. So we have a pattern that would light up the eyes of any conspiratorially minded person when they announce “We Got Him!“but he, Heh, Heh, conveniently will not be seen by the public,ready for trial, testimony, depositions,and Q&A;by the Press because he’s dead! The real folks are still out there.
The same campaign of leaked lies went on with Hatfill. He was found innocent and paid $5 million dollars in compensation by the government in spite of the best efforts of the spinmeisters. It’s obviously ludicrous to claim that a man who had ‘homicial’ tendencies and was supposedly roaming the streets looking for someone to stab would be given a top level security clearance and allowed to make anthrax and anthrax vaccines in a top secret biological warfare lab. The people making these claims are simply trying to discredit Mr. Ivins as they tried to discredit Hatfill before him. The government knows exactly who sent those letters because they worked for them. Cheney was behind all of this as well as the media campaign to convince people Saddam Hussein was behind the letters. I think truthdig should do more investigative reports instead of simply being a mouthpiece for what is essentially Bush administration propaganda.
