The Hamilton, N.J., postal sorting facility is shown in March 2005, just before reopening after being shut down in October 2001 because it had been found to be contaminated with anthrax spores.

The apparent suicide of 62-year-old scientist Bruce E. Ivins on Tuesday shook up his co-workers at the military biodefense labs in Maryland where he’d worked for nearly two decades. But the significance of his death extended beyond personal tragedy when it emerged that Ivins was about to be prosecuted by the Justice Department for alleged involvement in the anthrax attacks of 2001.

Los Angeles Times:

Ivins, whose name had not been disclosed publicly as a suspect in the case, played a central role in research to improve anthrax vaccines by preparing anthrax formulations used in experiments on animals.

Regarded as a skilled microbiologist, Ivins also helped the FBI analyze the powdery material recovered from one of the anthrax-tainted envelopes sent to a U.S. senator’s office in Washington.

Ivins died Tuesday at Frederick Memorial Hospital after ingesting a massive dose of prescription Tylenol mixed with codeine, said a friend and colleague, who declined to be identified out of concern that he would be harassed by the FBI.

The death—without any mention of suicide—was announced to Ivins’ colleagues at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, or USAMRIID, through a staffwide e-mail.

“People here are pretty shook up about it,” said Caree Vander Linden, a spokeswoman for USAMRIID, who said she was not at liberty to discuss details surrounding the death.

The anthrax mailings killed five people, crippled national mail service, shut down a Senate office building and spread fear of further terrorism after the Sept. 11 attacks.

And i guess one would suppose that mental health facilities leave drugs lying around cause their patient just need pain killers in large doses…

Sound like he was setting up a giant clinical trial on humans. The anthrax attacks allowed the program he was running to go into high gear. It also resurrected the anthrax vaccine that was given to military personnel although it had some pretty horrible side effects.

His psychiatrist called him homicidal and sociopathic with a history since his graduate school days of weird behavior. His social worker said he stalked her and uttered death threats.

What the hell was he doing at Fort Detrick? (What the hell is ANYONE doing at Fort Detrick?)

Half my computer time today has involved a search to find an article read this morning regarding a very recent leak from a CDC lab in Atlanta that possibly leaked into the surrounding area’s air. The failure of the air containment system was blamed on a bird shorting out power, while the other two power sources were down for maintenance. I’ve Googled trying to fid the article, and backtracked trying to find a link, but to no avail.

The big question in my mind is who’s head will roll for this? Seems to me, at a facility as dangerous as this, if none other than a complete idiot were going to work on three power systems they would shut them down one at a time, to always have a safety factor of redundancy, rather than insanely servicing two at once.

I know I read this article, and would appreciate help finding it once more. In light of making Ivins the biological terrorist scapegoat, the aricle I read might be relevant.

For the record I believe Ivins was ‘offed’ because he knew too much to be exposed to the light of public scrutiny a trial would bring. Dead men tell no tales, and pirates cover their tracks.

Bruce E. Ivins ‘Suicide’ Is To Those Anthrax Attacks What The Murder Of Lee Harvey Oswald Was To The Kennedy Assasination

“Why is this?”

“Case closed!”

“Anything else?”

“Gets the government off the hook.”

“How?”

“Giving credence to the claim that a lone madman did it?”

“Based on?”

“‘Suspect stood to gain from anthrax panic’ in today’s LA Times, with the author depending almost exclusively on gossip and innuendo from anonymous sources.”

“Shades of mainstream media’s coverage of the Anthrax attacks seven years ago, when ABC news went public with information, also from anonymous sources, that Saddam Hussein was responsible for those attacks.”

“Anonymous sources or in-house CIA/FBI plants?”

“Based on?”

“The 1973 Church Committee’s revelations about how back then U.S. intelligence services had infiltrated MSM.”

“But thirty-seven years later why would the intelligence services still be using such illegal tactics?”

“What else can they do?”

“Fess-up?”

“And then what sort of world?”

“It’ll be up to us.”

cyrena;

The connection between Cheney and 9/11 is indisputable. Therefore it’s not unreasonable to conclude the connection between Cheney and Anthrax is indisputable. Therefore, it’s not unreasonable to conclude the connection between bentonite, anthrax and Cheney is indisputable. However, there never was bentonite in the anthrax.

That was manufactured “intelligence” (?) as well as the WMD. But I think it’s beyond safe to say Cheney was connected to that too! The manufacturing of the intelligence that is.

And certainly he would have a working knowledge of the use of bentonite in drilling for oil and even biological weapons, which is maybe what we should be asking ourselves. What does Cheney know about Saddams [former] biological weapons?

Was Cheney in Congress when Congress voted to authorize the sale of biological weapons material to Saddam? Probably. So it’s not unreasonable to draw that conclusion as well.

Like the Mother who convinced her daughter and her daughters boyfriend to kill her husband. Mom was amoral and the kids were dumb no doubt, but even though mom never swung the bat or wielded the knife, she’s the one who went to prison for life.

Now whatever made me think of that recent court case? Oh yeh ... Cheney. smile

~~~
“During the last week of October, 2001, ABC News, led by Brian Ross, continuously trumpeted the claim as their top news story that government tests conducted on the anthrax—tests conducted at Ft. Detrick—revealed that the anthrax sent to Daschle contained the chemical additive known as bentonite. ABC News, including Peter Jennings, repeatedly claimed that the presence of bentonite in the anthrax was compelling evidence that Iraq was responsible for the attacks, since—as ABC variously claimed—bentonite “is a trademark of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s biological weapons program” and “only one country, Iraq, has used bentonite to produce biological weapons.”
“ABC News’ claim—which they said came at first from “three well-placed but separate sources,” followed by “four well-placed and separate sources”—was completely false from the beginning. There never was any bentonite detected in the anthrax (a fact ABC News acknowledged for the first time in 2007 only as a result of my badgering them about this issue). It’s critical to note that it isn’t the case that preliminary tests really did detect bentonite and then subsequent tests found there was none. No tests ever found or even suggested the presence of bentonite. The claim was just concocted from the start. It just never happened.”
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/08/01/anthrax/index.html
Proving ABC, Brian Ross, Peter Jennings and their staff of reporters are just that. Reporters who read/repeat whatever’s handed them.
Because “investigate” [as in investigative journalist] is as foreign to them as “news.”
Regardless, as I noted below. Bentonite is a product found everywhere. Even in the cat litter. And if you live in any area in North America that had fallout from the Super Caldera Volcano, that erupted under Yellowstone Park several thousand years ago, you may very well have it in your own back yard!
And all this proves again, the 9/11 attack and the Anthrax attack were engineered from day one by person or persons unknown to bring a nations belief in freedom to a screeching halt. And those persons knew from day one which TV and print mainstreammedia outlets they could count on to help with the necessary propaganda.
And where did that propaganda originate? Probably from the White House office of the guy in charge of Vice.
THE 9/11
ANTHRAX FRAME-UP
“There are several indications of deliberate deception in these items.
A terrorist group seeking the maximum number of casualties would not advertise the fact that the letters contained a biological weapon, they would have enclosed an innocuous letter to ensure maximum spread of the agent - the letters are virtually shouting “seal off the area and get a doctor!”
The addresses are written at a slight slant, oddly enough matching the look of the posters and flyers at the Post Office warning all America to “watch out for these”. While the letters to Congress are intended to appear to be from fourth graders, the letters to the New York Post and Tom Brokaw have no need for such an artifice.
Dates written by Middle Easterners begin with the day first, then the month, then the year, therefore the date should read 11-9-2001. The above letters follow the American convention for the dates shown.
One of the letters is a photocopy of another. Most places which have copiers have typewriters or word processors, appliances whose operation is no mystery to the sort of people who go in and out of government laboratories.
In short, the entire look of the letters is a contrived fake, creating what they thought a letter from a third world middle eastern terrorist would look like, so that the phrases “Death to Israel”, and “Allah is Great” (a real Muslin says either “Allah Achbar” or “God is Great”) would point the finger of blame for the Anthrax at the middle eastern Arabs.
Except that we know for a fact that the Anthrax didn’t come from the Middle East. It isn’t Saddam’s or Osama’s, it’s the very best high quality mil-spec Anthrax home grown at Fort Detrick, Dugway, and USAMRIID.
It’s our Anthrax.
And that means that all the slanted writing, the extra crossings on the “T"s, the references to Allah and Israel are a carefully crafted hoax, designed to trick Americans into thinking that Arab Muslims from the middle east were to blame for the Anthrax letters.
The above letters are not evidence of a terrorist attack but of a deception against the people of the United States; a deliberate frame-up of middle eastern Arabs perpetrated by the same party who owns the Anthrax.
That a plan exists to frame Arab Muslims for the crimes of another party is now a proven fact.
There are two suspects accused of being the source of the Anthrax letters. The first is Dr. Philip Zack, who was caught on camera entering the storage area where the Anthrax was kept without proper authorization.
Documents from the inquiry show that one unauthorized person who was observed entering the [Fort Detrick] lab building at night was Langford’s predecessor, Lt. Col. Philip Zack, who at the time no longer worked at Fort Detrick. A surveillance camera recorded Zack being let in at 8:40 p.m. on Jan. 23, 1992, apparently by Dr. Marian Rippy, a lab pathologist and close friend of Zack’s, according to a report filed by a security guard. [ctnow]
The second suspect is the more well known Dr. Stephen Hatfill, accused (and re-accused and re-accused) by Dr. Barbara Rosenberg although no actual evidence of his involvement has surfaced.
But regardless of whether one thinks Dr. Zack or Dr. Hatfill is the culprit, neither man is an Arab Muslim, which again means that the above letters, written to appear to be from Arab Muslims, are proof of a plot to frame Arabs for terror attacks in the US. The only question is, did that plot extend to 9-11 itself.
[As a footnote, Dr. Zack has a prior history of hostility towards Arabs and was reprimanded by his employer repeatedly on that issue.]”
THANKS Louise!! For this very excellent info on bentonite. (No wonder it sounded ‘familiar’ eh? Even to a non-physical science person like me)
I figured this much out though..
“.. Bentonite in the Anthrax used as a link to Saddam, is just one more example of how stupid liars and their gullible followers are. Bentonite is everywhere a makeup base is being manufactured, or an oil well is being drilled!..” wink
And when I saw Halliburton+Wyoming I knew it equaled Cheney+Oil. And yep, that connects to 9/11+Anthrax, at least as far as I’m concerned. I mean, why shouldn’t I be able to make unproven leaps? (especially since mine are far more likely to be true
wink  )
Thanks again.
cyrena;
Bentonite plant production has increased 40 percent since 2000 in Wyoming, where the majority of bentonite is mined.
Part of that can be attributed to the energy boom; bentonite is used in drilling oil and gas wells, and exploration and production of coal-bed methane, a type of natural gas.
“Wyoming bentonite is absolutely unique in the world. China and India are mining minerals and exporting them cheaply. But we’re still exporting Wyoming bentonite around the world because it’s much better quality.”
“Bentonite has more uses than any mineral I can think of. It’s so diverse,” - “A lot of it is behind the scene uses that people don’t even think about.” http://www.missoulian.com/articles/2006/05/21/business/biz04.txt
Bentonite is mined in the following States: http://geology.com/news/images/bentonite.gif
Halliburton provides the Bentonite/Barite storage tanks to Saipem’s off shore drilling rigs.
Located in Italy, Saipem is now the largest, most powerful, most international and best balanced turnkey contractor in the oil and gas industry, with three global business units: Onshore, Offshore, Drilling.
Saipem is a subsidiary of Eni S.p.A. - Eni, is active in 70 countries with a staff of about 76,000 employees, and operates in the oil and gas, electricity generation and sale, petrochemicals, oilfield services construction and engineering industries.
Halliburton is one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the energy industry. With nearly 50,000 employees in approximately 70 countries, and serves the upstream oil and gas industry throughout the life cycle of the reservoir.
Any corporation dealing with the energy industry, which is owned and operated from an Asian or European base threatens the petro-dollar. As the dollar value continues to drop, the euro continues to increase in value. Halliburton works with foreign companies, but like most energy corporations is based in the petro-dollar.
Perhaps the underlying cause for battles revolving around oil is the fear of losing control, because of the threat from a strengthening euro. If that is the case, Cheney has to be considered as short sighted as Bush, because current Administration policy has done more to weaken the dollar than anything the Europeans could have dreamed up.
Bentonite in the Anthrax used as a link to Saddam, is just one more example of how stupid liars and their gullible followers are. Bentonite is everywhere a makeup base is being manufactured, or an oil well is being drilled!
And the Anthrax laced letters were just one more button pushed to panic the witless. Who created that button? Most likely the same who’s who created 9/11.
Please the stringent rules/protocols when handling biological toxins was obviously thwarted- and it had to be on a concerted level. Who insistented this agent reach the lab- and WHY?
How did this ‘MAD SCIENTIST’ not die from his exposure- sending this off in plane white envelopes? Why did he target only the liberal media- like MSNBC and Congress? If his motivation was to Prove his Vaccine was effective- then why not just expose those around him…Why send it to the Liberal Media- when the Right wingers have the support of the WH?
Why target congress, when he would make faster gains by targeting other scientists or the medical field?
Why di McCain feel obliged to ‘leak’ these agents oringated in Iraq? Who told him that, who told him to reveal such classified info and Who encourged him to use it to support an invasion on Iraq? What benefit did Mac gain from ‘leaking’ this- a clear shot to the Repug Nomination, the use of All Neo con tools to Win in ‘08?
who’s goals set down long before 9/11 were within Reach after this ‘Attack’, what entities benefited from our invasion of iraq?
Seems the level of Deceit and Crimes committed by this Adminsitration warrant the denial of any ‘Benefit of the Doubt’.
I just asked last week…what is Congress & the International Community waiting for ..Genocide? Well now there is clear proof that has already taken place!
this story is as Weak as their claims We were attacke don 9/11 because they hate our Freedoms- when hindsight has proven it is this admin which hates US for our Freedoms. Not to mention the attacks were not against Americans, but against Military Industrial complexes (foreign Policyrun by Oilmen, Military force to back it up & the finances to pull it off)!
Since I’ve certainly never claimed to have ANY knowledge about microbiology, I honestly wouldn’t have expected this ‘bentonite’ to sound the least bit familiar to me. But, it did. So, I did a quick check, and came up with all sorts of things..a clay substance used for detox, and some component of sodium,(you can buy it anywhere apparently) and then there was this other thing…showing in the standard listings that come up in a real basic search…
Bentonite Performance Minerals LLC - Halliburton
Bentonite Performance Minerals LLC (BPM) is a world leader in the production of Wyoming bentonite, the benchmark in the global sodium bentonite industry. ...
http://www.bentonite.com/ - 30k
So, I thought that seemed interesting enough…Cheney’s Halliburton, Cheney’s Wyoming, and the world leader in the production of bentonite. But, when I clicked on it, there was no mention of Halliburton in the text of the link. Just a photo of the world leader’s production factory.
Doesn’t tell me how it has anything to do with anthrax either. But, Glenn Greenwald’s piece explains how ABC connected this bentonite to Saddam.
Now, am I just totally confused, or is there more than one version of bentonite? I mean, ABC traced bentonite directly to Saddams Iraq, and this makes it sound like the stuff can be found in the flippin dirt everywhere on the globe, and one can buy in on line, and eat/drink or apparently inhale the shit.
What’s up with this? Should I just re-start my computer or something?
This show is a joke. If they ever tell the truth about anything it’s by accident and you didn’t really expect that those two ‘experts’ would tell the truth did you? If they’d thought they were going to tell the truth they would never have got on the show. Ivins is an innocent victim of the US government. Another one. I’m glad Hatfill fought back and got $5 million dollars compensation out of them. I don’t imagine Bush and Cheney wanted to see Ivins in court revealing things they didn’t want revealed and now he’s dead. How convenient. It really is a neverending nightmare and the worst part is that if McCain wins the election it will continue.
Vital unresolved anthrax questions and ABC News
(Updated below - Update II - Update III - Update IV - Update V - Update VI)
“The FBI’s lead suspect in the September, 2001 anthrax attacks—Bruce E. Ivins—died Tuesday night, apparently by suicide, just as the Justice Department was about to charge him with responsibility for the attacks. For the last 18 years, Ivins was a top anthrax researcher at the U.S. Government’s biological weapons research laboratories at Ft. Detrick, Maryland, where he was one of the most elite government anthrax scientists on the research team at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease (USAMRIID).
The 2001 anthrax attacks remain one of the great mysteries of the post-9/11 era. After 9/11 itself, the anthrax attacks were probably the most consequential event of the Bush presidency. One could make a persuasive case that they were actually more consequential. The 9/11 attacks were obviously traumatic for the country, but in the absence of the anthrax attacks, 9/11 could easily have been perceived as a single, isolated event. It was really the anthrax letters—with the first one sent on September 18, just one week after 9/11—that severely ratcheted up the fear levels and created the climate that would dominate in this country for the next several years after. It was anthrax—sent directly into the heart of the country’s elite political and media institutions, to then-Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD), Sen. Pat Leahy (D-Vt), NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw, and other leading media outlets—that created the impression that social order itself was genuinely threatened by Islamic radicalism.
If the now-deceased Ivins really was the culprit behind the attacks, then that means that the anthrax came from a U.S. Government lab, sent by a top U.S. Army scientist at Ft. Detrick. Without resort to any speculation or inferences at all, it is hard to overstate the significance of that fact. From the beginning, there was a clear intent on the part of the anthrax attacker to create a link between the anthrax attacks and both Islamic radicals and the 9/11 attacks. This was the letter sent to Brokaw:”
Yeah - the guy works with anthrax and kills himself with Tylenol. That’s laughable.
But what about the barely readable hand written notes about “Allah” and “Death to America” that were packed with the anthrax in the envelopes that we have all known for years came from an Army weapons lab in Maryland. That’s when the investigation dropped dead 7 years ago. As soon as DNA proved it had to have come from the Army lab the story disappeared.
I was watching the Newshour on PBS tonight after I came upon it by accident changing channels after watching Democracy Now! and they had a discussion on the anthrax and Livins suicide going. There was an author on there who said with a straight face, and he was not challenged, and he repeated it a few times over the course of the 15 minutes, that the anthrax came from a “cowpie in Texas in 1964″ and that there were “hundreds of thousands of amateur biologists” who could have “made this in their kitchen” all over America, speaking of the Ames strain of finely granulated powder form weapons grade anthrax, which, anyone who has paid attention to this story knows is completely wrong and crazily off base. The only possible source for this stuff was that lab in Maryland.
Yet there it was on PBS presented as if fact that it could have come from any kitchen and originated in a cowpie in Texas.
We are most certainly living in an Orwellian nightmare.
The forensic science evidence behind the anthrax attacks is highly controversial and needs to be properly debated by scientists qualified not only in microbiology but also the physics and chemistry of aerosol powders.
FBI scientist Douglas Beecher published a highly controversial paper in August 2006 - claiming, without data, that the spores contained no additives. This is the opposite of what was reported by US Army labs.
Details are given here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_anthrax_attacks
The August 2006 issue of Applied and Environmental Microbiology contained an article written by Dr. Douglas Beecher of the FBI labs in Quantico, VA.[22] The article, titled “Forensic Application of Microbiological Culture Analysis to Identify Mail Intentionally Contaminated with Bacillus anthracis spores ,” states “Individuals familiar with the compositions of the powders in the letters have indicated that they were comprised simply of spores purified to different extents.” The article also specifically criticizes “a widely circulated misconception” “that the spores were produced using additives and sophisticated engineering supposedly akin to military weapon production.” The harm done by such things is described this way: “This idea is usually the basis for implying that the powders were inordinately dangerous compared to spores alone. The persistent credence given to this impression fosters erroneous preconceptions, which may misguide research and preparedness efforts and generally detract from the magnitude of hazards posed by simple spore preparations.” However, after this article had appeared the editor of Applied and Environmental Microbiology, L. Nicholas Ornston, stated that he was uncomfortable with Beecher’s statement in the article since it had no evidence to back it up and contained no citation.[23]
In August 2007 Dr. Kay Mereish, UN Chief, Biological Planning and Operations, published a letter in Applied and Environmental Microbiology titled “Unsupported Conclusions on the Bacillus anthracis Spores”.[25] This letter, published in the same journal as FBI scientist Douglas Beecher (see paragraph above), points out that the statements made by Dr. Beecher in his article on the lack of additives were not backed up with any data. She suggested that Dr. Beecher publish a paper with analytical data showing the absence of silica or other additives. Such data would include SEM images of the pure spores as well as EDX spectra and EDX images showing the absence of any foreign additives such as silica or the elements silicon and oxygen. Dr. Mereish referenced a 2006 CBRN, Counter-Proliferation and Response meeting in Paris where a presenter announced that an additive was present in the attack anthrax that affected the spore’s electrical charges.
