Pope: ‘Insatiable Consumption’ Depleting Earth’s Resources

Pope Benedict XVI hit a green note Thursday, pontificating (har har) about the environment to a crowd of pilgrims at the Roman Catholic Church’s youth festival in Sydney, Australia, and making good on his eco-friendly nickname, “the green pope.”

AP via MyWay News:

“Some of you come from island nations whose very existence is threatened by rising water levels; others from nations suffering the effects of devastating drought,” the pope said, referring to global warming.

He noted that during his more than 20-hour flight from Rome to Sydney he had a bird’s eye view of a vast swath of the world that inspired awe and introspection.

“Perhaps reluctantly we come to acknowledge that there are also scars which mark the surface of our earth: erosion, deforestation, the squandering of the world’s mineral and ocean resources in order to fuel an insatiable consumption,” he said.

Types of “poison” are afflicting the world’s social environment, he said, such as substance abuse, along with the exaltation of violence and sexual degradation, for which he blamed television and the Internet.

Perhaps, the friendly Green Pope’s speechwriter, did a bit of editing, but certainly not so much, as to make his statement meaningless, quite to the contrary:

“Perhaps reluctantly we come [why say ‘come’ instead of ‘begin’ or another verb] to acknowledge that there are also scars which mark the surface of our earth: erosion, deforestation, the squandering of the world’s mineral and ocean resources in order to fuel an insatiable consumption,” he said.

Insatiable consumption for, among others:
-- religious, financial, and political ‘infallibility’;
-- financial wealth, power and status;
-- financial, religious and national debt-indentured slaves;

Insatiable consumption infallible policies:
-- religious and national slave and cannon fodder breeding, ad infinitum, the pied piper’s tune continues...; this time with a ‘neutral Swiss twist’.

Switzerland, along with the USA is one of the countries with the highest per capita of firearms, owned by citizens. Allegedly, Hitler repeatedly ordered it’s invasion, but his Officers repeatedly refused; because of that fact.

Remember Amazing Grace, where the British Monarchy resisted for years, and years the bill to end slavery, and finally near the end, William Pitt the Prime Minister informs, William Wilberforce that the British Monarchy has decided that they shall remain neutral on the issue, of abolishing slavery.

So, all in all, if so interpreted, a more than brave statement, by Pope Benedict: very, very brave.

Perhaps to Americans, catholic or not, the Pope’s recent comments seem all too hypocritical, but let’s consider this church in its broader context: the world.

Instead of condeming an organization with over a billion members because Papal tradition is admittedly decadent, I feel that it’s worth while to appreciate the fact that huge swaths of people from all over the globe respect this individual and his opinions.  Even if Americans tend to regard him as irrelevant (something they’ve done with EVERY pope- remember when John Paul II called for an end to the death penalty in the US?), there are countless numbers across South America, Asia, and Africa who are listening to the pope’s words without the cynicism that is so pervasive in these posts.  Global warming and the mentalities that perpetuate it must be fought in every country, so why not welcome an unlikely friend?

Condemning “insatiable consumption” is, in theory, something good and noble with which I agree! However, we don’t need a “Papa” traveling half way around the world to get to a staged forum to say that. Imagine how much cost was involved in this trip!

Moreover, coming from a man who has to wear all these costly costumes, living in a luxury palace, with guards, entourage and courtly attendants, and being served by a huge number of servants around the year, year after year, smacks of great level of hypocrisy. A supposedly man-of-God can be more effective if he just practices what he preaches!

Prophet Muhammad, who is much greater than all the Popes in history, lived in a two-room hut made of mud and straw, washed his own clothes, mend his own worn clothes and shoes, and carried his own purchases from the market. No servants or big entourage or big mansions. All these things could have been for him for the asking. And the enemies of Islam continue to wonder why his followers continue to love him dearly after 1400 years, and why they feel so offended when his enemies try cheap shots at him!

Isn’t this the same pope who said a few years ago that to solve all the worlds problems you have to make more babies? Wrong answer. In the case of over population-less is more and not the other way around. Almost all organized religions of the world tell their sheeple to make more babies. If God provides for all, then how come millions of people/babies starve to death every day, have diseases they cannot get treated, unclean drinking water, etc..Or are they the ones who do not believe enough? Doesn’t matter if you can afford them, want them, need them or even like them to begin with, just make more babies regardless that by doing so only contributes more to the problems we now are experiencing. More human activity equals more global warming, more pollution, less resources and the list is endless.

Funny, in many cases these are the same people who want to limit the number of cats/dogs a person is allowed to own in America to 3, claiming the amount of damage animals (many never out of the house) cause for the neighborhood, yet fail to see how their 16 kids do more damage and more permanent damage than a cat or dog ever did. Also, they believe in forced sterilization of peoples pets(all mine are fixed) as they claim there are too many unwanted animals now and think nothing of killing excess animals, failing to see that humans also fall into this category. Well guess what people, you are also an animal. Humans are in excess, yet we are told by religious leaders and political leaders who are intellectually dim to continue to add to this situation, without a thought of the consequences that will result form the excess of people on the planet. After all GOD will provide, they just don’t say what.

“Insatiable consumption” coming from the guy who lives in the Apostolic Palace, while maintaining papal residences at the Lateran Palace and the Castel Gandolfo?

Not much reason to doubt that, but I also wonder how many are treating it like their favorite football team being in the No. 1 spot, proud, very proud.(I think this should be listed as a sign of insanity, at least group insanity, like lemmings running into the ocean for no valid reason)

Papa , you say “god will provide”, but look what he provides- death, destruction, depravity, etc. But keep on multiplying,you say, no matter that overpopulation is the chief cause of many of our problems. Religion in general is the cause of most wars

The church encourages and demands that people have babies like bowel movements. Doesn’t he think increasing the population, which is already huge, contributes to this environmental distruction?

The church shouldn’t be telling anyone what to do.

20-hour flight ... half of that over California:

Given all the news coverage about the rise of the Chinese economy, you could be forgiven for thinking that the world’s most populous country is hogging all the world’s resources, while the developed nations are fighting for scraps.

But, at least with transportation fuel, you’d be wrong. California alone uses more gasoline than any country in the world (except the US as a whole, of course). That means California’s 20 billion gallon gasoline and diesel habit is greater than China’s! (Or Russia’s. Or India’s. Or Brazil’s. Or Germany’s.)

Demonic possession known as Organized Religion. After millenia of oppression,Abuse, murder and Deception, i can only hope that the ‘Holy’ men are right about a Final Judgement. I would love to see the minions of Pure Evil finally Burn for their sins against Man, Nature/God.
It astounds me that these Deceivers claim, and are given, jurisdiction over others souls when they themselves have proven to be the criminals, Traitors, and heretics. The most vile entity that ever came between HumanKind and it’s Maker was organized ‘Religion’. Of course Benny won’t be alone, there are Millenia worth of Guilt to go around from all Sects.
Is this an attempt to redeem himself after being a Nazi Youth? How many Jewish, Gypsies, dissenter neighbors did you Report,Benny?

pope,
I failed to see any mention of the harm and disruption of 6.8 billion people to our home. Or is that just not a problem? Maybe when w sends heysoos his list of non-believers, heysoos will come down and give it to those worthless souls.

The pope who lives in a palace is telling us we have to conserve? I’d like to see his carbon footprint. This pope whose very lifestyle is supported largely through the proceeds of oil company stocks, I might add.

Speaking of sexual degradation this same pope was the one, as cardinal, who swept the sexual abuse of young boys by priests, under the rug. I seriously don’t think tv or the internet had anything to do with those scandals.

Popes who live in marble palaces...........
