Israel and Iran Talk Tough

Offense and defense: Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

Israel and Iran appear to be locked in a dangerous round of ¿Quién es más macho? On Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak responded to Iran’s new displays of military prowess—this week’s missile tests—by declaring that Israel is ready for action should Iran push the direct-threat level any higher. However, as the BBC notes, Iran may have digitally enhanced photos of the missile launchings in order to compensate for some less-than-perfect test results.

BBC:

Over the past two days, the Iranian military has tested missiles, including one that it says could reach Israel.

State media said the tests included the first night launch of the Shahab-3 missile, said to have a range of 2,000km (1,240 miles), along with shore-to-sea, surface-to-surface and sea-to-air missiles.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the US had increased its security in the region and Iran should not be “confused” about US capabilities.

Israel has responded to the missile tests by putting on display one of its aircraft that it says can spy on Iran.

[...] Meanwhile, the AFP news agency has issued a warning that a still image of the missiles being launched, one of several distributed by Iran, was “apparently digitally altered”.

Fadel Abdallah, back in 1980, the year Ronald Reagan was elected. The Libertarion party had for their presidential candidate, Ed Clark, a lawyer for an oil company (Atlantic Richfield) who was quite aware of this gulf state predicament, observing it as it were, from inside the belly of the beast. When asked about United States foreign policy, Mr. Clark said he didn’t know where to begin, but nevertheless said that the military support of those brutal regimes would eventually prove disastrous. What he also said, and I will never forget this, that if you can not purchase oil in a voluntary manner, without economic or military coercion, you have no business purchasing it at all.
A rather remarkable insight that was totally ignored, then and now.
Ed Clark had to be ignored, because he proposed ending all military subsidies to the Gulf States and also including Israel. When asked how could Israel survive without the military help of USA big brother, Mr.Clark said that as a sovereign country that they would have to solve their own problems with their neighbors.

==========================
Thank you StMichaelTraveler for your well-documented post. Certainly the overthrow of Musadagh by the CIA and his replacement with the tyrant Shah is one of the saddest episodes in American history.

But the story of the Shah is not one isolated episode indicative of the misguided policies of the USA. Look now at what countries are the friends of the US political-military establishment. Besides, little colonialist-terrorist Israel, there is Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, all gulf states. All these are ruled by medieval despotic ruling families or by dictator “presidents”, who are enemies of freedom, progress and democracy. In light of this, all USA empty talk about spreading democracy in the region is the ultimate hypocrisy and double standards. In fact, all the US political-military efforts in the region are intended to arrest the spread of freedom and democracy, to prolong the reigns of despotic and tyrannical regimes of the Arab world, while at the same time, giving colonial-terrorist Israel the public relation advantage as the only real democracy in the region.

In conclusion, if half of the American people would really wake up to the reality of what their political -military establishment has been doing in their names, I am sure that there would a real revolution ; whether peaceful or bloody!

But Ed Hargas, we are the US of A ! WE have the most toys of anyone in the whole wide world.  Doesn’t that give us the right to boss everyone else around? Oh right, except Israel who bosses us around.

Now Ed, sit down, shut up and start waving that little american flag before we label you a terrorist !;) And btw, I notice you aren’t wearing your flag pin.....

St Michael.. thank you for that most excellent post.

I think more than anything to be able to defend their country.  Iran wants the same things as Israel, security.  Who can they trust?

They remember 1979; Arabic nations who supported Iraq against Iran.  The integrated financial, technical, and armaments that were provided by many Arab countries to support Arabic Iraq against non-Arab Iranians was responsible for death of about 500,000 Iranians and injury of several millions.

They remember our financial and technical support of Sadam Hossein to use chemical bombs against Iranians.

Iranians remember summer of 1953.

President George Bush often states that Iran is threatening the interests of the Unites States in Persian Gulf! What are the interests of England and the United States in Persian Gulf, the Persian front door to Iran?
A primer for discussion of these issues must start with review of British and the United States policies relative to the Persian Gulf region. Stephen Kinzer, a veteran New York Times correspondent, in his book “All the Shah’s Men, an American coup and the roots of Middle East Terror”, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2003, brilliantly reconstructs the events leading to the present dilemma of the United States in the Middle East. The events described in this marvelous book are not fiction; the events actually happened during the summer of 1953 in Tehran, Iran.

The United States Central Intelligence Agency operation Ajax staged coup d’état in 1953 against democratically elected Prime Minister Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh. Democracy was substituted with the despotic regime of Mohammad Reza Shah. The dawn of democracy in Iran, started in late 1880, flickered by democratically elected Mossadegh, was extinguished. This was the beginning of Iranian servitude once more to the interests of England and the United States. During his last years, Shah did not trust Iranian people; his inner palace was guarded by Israel commandos.  Since 1979, the United States has been punishing Iranian people for ousting the immature, weak, despotic Mohammad Reza Shah. This punishment, Iranian assert, included Iraq invasion of Iran instigated by President Regan. During this war, the United States and her satellite nations helped materially and logistically Iraqi military forces to invade Iran and use chemical and biological weapons on Iranian population.

Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh

In the preface of his book, Kinzer recalls his conversation with an Iranian lady about Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh. He asked her: “What do you remember…about the coup against him?” She responded:

“Why did you Americans do that terrible thing? We always loved America.  To us, America was the great country, the perfect country, the country that helped us while other countries were exploiting us. But after that moment, no one in Iran ever trusted the United States again…”

This un-American act was instigated by Winston Churchill-Anthony Eden of England and two American brothers John Foster Dulles (US Secretary of State) and Allen Dulles (Director of Central Intelligence Agency).  The primary reason for this regime change was to subordinate Iranian people and exploit the Iranian natural resources.

Harry Truman once said: “There is nothing new in the world except the histories you don not know.” Have we learned from our past mistakes committed during 1953 not to repeat it once more?  This time the price would be much larger for both the Iranian and our American societies!  We must stop George Bush with his neocolonialism.

If you were the President of Iran, what would you do for your country?

re: By jersey girl, July 10 at 4:54 pm:

Very good point, jersey girl, about the US/Israeli “black ops” in Iran, aiding and abetting, and possibly outright committing, terrorism against Iranian civilians.

Imagine if some foreign country were doing such things inside the US — along with constantly threatening to bomb us — and than we conducted some military exercises to demonstrate our willingness to retaliate if attacked, and were promptly accused by that same foreign country of “threatening” them, justifying their planned bombing of us!

Americans are so arrogant that they refuse ever to look at a situation from someone else’s point of view. We have the right to threaten everyone else, and conduct violent espionage inside their borders — and if they threaten to retaliate, they only show that we were right to threaten them in the first place!

What is very disturbing is the H.J. Res. 362, a little Gothic number with a lot of “where as” huffing and puffing can be revealed to be what it truly is: a declaration of war against Iran. Is this part of the “tougher sanctions” that Senator Obama blubbers on about? Read it for yourself:

My 4-cents worth of observations:

1. Though this piece of news is very disquieting, it’s almost laughable how politicians play the macho game, and more so when there is among them a woman. C. Rice, E. Barak are two pathetic players in a comedy-tragedy that will bring more ruin to their countries and the world at large. Though I am against any country spending huge amounts of treasure on developing weapons, nevertheless, and in light of the the reality of Israel and the U.S. constant threats against Iran, Iran, like every other nation, has the right and obligation to its people to develop their own deterrent capabilities against the world worst bullies, Israel and the USA.

2. I was entertained to a laughing point that the so-called experts say that some of the Iranian missile launching images were “apparently digitally altered.” I am happy that this phrase is going to become now a common terminology for what governments and intelligence agencies have been doing for a long time as a propaganda tool to mislead both the public and the enemy. If Iran has the capabilities to “digitally alter” the reality, imagine what capabilities both the USA and Israel have in connection to this. I used something close to this terminology to describe the manipulated images in connection to the events of 9 /11 to cover the fact that it was an inside job!

3. Now, we the masses or the sheepish herd, need to take these escalating developments very seriously and do something about it. And here I am grateful to “jersey girl” who already said what I wanted to say; so here is the reproduction of her words from a post above, but without the part we she said she must have been hallucinating:

“We need to get organized and take to the streets in massive numbers, storm and takeover tv stations and the internet and demand an end to this madness.”

So short of a real revolution, we have only ourselves to blame for failing to prevent this madness which will lead to mutual destruction and possibly WWIII!

What a joke! Is this how the general election will be hijacked? It is time for us all to stand up and tell our so called leaders to stop the posturing. It is one thing to defend our country, it’s another to play threatening games that can lead to a war that benefits only those who are now benefiting from Afghanistan and Iraq. Iran is not capable of a sustained offensive with Israel and/or the United States. So, who will benefit from this so called threat from Iran? Iran’s president will keep his image as someone who will stand up to the U.S. and Israel which is how he keeps his position in his government and of course there are the politicians here in the U.S and in Israel who are working the same angle. As an American citizen I am tired of politicians in general (whether they are ours or those of another country). These war mongering fools can go to hell but they don’t have the right to take innocent people with them.

Ed:  Absolutely… and don’t forget the black ops we have going on in Iran to stir up trouble as well.

Iran is being set up by Israel and the U.S. No doubt about it. After Iraq, anyone who believes otherwise is a fool.

Iran’s exercises are clearly in response to Israeli and US threats of aggression. It is ludicrous to characterize Iran’s actions as “aggressions” of any sort. Iran has a right to demonstrate, in the face of imminent threats, that they are capable of responding energetically.

Don’t worry Ehud Barack! Obama has promised to do everything in his power… EVERYTHING,,, to help defend you against Iran!  Wait, I think I just saw him ride by on his white charger in his black cowboy hat!

All sarcasm aside.  This is no laughing matter.  We are gonna be at war with Iran before September.  Then the hounds of hell will be unleashed upon all of us.

We need to get organized and take to the streets in massive numbers, storm and takeover tv stations and the internet and demand an end to this madness.  Oh wait, I must have been hallucinating. This is America not France or Venezuela.. nevermind. Memories of the movie “V” for Vendetta are apparently still very fresh in my mind.
