Zimbabwe’s president plans to stop by Rome for a food summit sponsored by the United Nations, a fact that Australia’s foreign minister finds “frankly obscene.” He’s not alone in his disdain for Robert Mugabe, who has transformed Zimbabwe from one of Africa’s bread baskets into a place of chronic hunger.

BBC:

The presence of Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe at a United Nations food summit in Rome is “obscene”, Australia’s foreign minister has said.

“This is the person who has presided over the starvation of his people,” said Stephen Smith.

Wouldn’t it be wonderfully ironic if there was a coup in Zimbabwe while he is out of the country.

Popular black, African leaders who unset rich, white land owners are boogeymen for the ‘liberals’ and ‘conservatives’ alike.

Yep, it IS obscene. But then, Mugabe is obscene. One of the most hated men on the planet. Maybe not as hated as GW, who has provided over starvation, homelessness, joblessness, and a bottomed out economy of OUR popluation, not to mention the crimes he’s perpetrated against the rest of the world. Still, relatively speaking, mugabe is close to as bad.

I guess he feels safe enough showing up since it is a United Nations event. Anywhere else, he could expect to be mugged or worse.
