The New York Daily News is reporting that Ted Kennedy wants his wife, Vicki, to succeed him in Congress. Although the lion of the Senate retains his post, his recent cancer diagnosis has many speculating as to who will eventually take the seat once held by John F. Kennedy. Ted, it seems, has an answer.

(h/t: Political Wire)

Daily News:

The 54-year-old Victoria Reggie Kennedy, a former hotshot Washington lawyer, is a Louisiana native and the daughter of a politically active judge.

She was hailed for holding the family together when John F. Kennedy Jr. was killed in a plane crash in 1999.

By favoring his wife, Kennedy, 76, is bypassing his late brother Robert Kennedy’s eldest son, Joe, a former congressman.

It’s all about their own dynasty of power and the hell with what the people might want.

At 76 he should have retired a long time ago like a lot of his buddies. They’ve long since become embarassments
but that addiction to power is just too great.

Term limits means no career politicians, period. It’s what this country needs to start to turn itself around.

The Kennedys don’t “own it”. The closest anyone has come to owning it has been the Bushs. They had a majority in the house, the senate, the supreme court AND the white house!! It’s going to be hard for the Republicans to blame the current sorry state of the economy on the Democrats!!

Fadel Abdallah,
The position can and would be filled by the Governor of Massachusetts. However, it’s doubtful that the Governor would go against Kennedy’s wishes. As for how democratic this is, remember that Republican Sonny Bono’s widow took his seat in Congress. It’s actually fairly common. She would finish the rest of Kennedy’s term in office and then face a general election after his term expires.

He owns the country, he can name his successor, sell his seat, or close down the whole damn building, whatever he chooses.  Or wait, maybe it’s the clintons who own the country?

Now I don’t understand and don’t find this compatible with a real democracy! Can a Senate position be a matter of succession passed from one member of the family to another? If the answer is yes, then I am totally out of this democracy!
