A European hedge fund just invested $30 million in a Christian-oriented video sharing site. The vast majority of Americans identify as Christian, and while the economy may be taking a nose dive, there’s still money to be made on Jesus.

Guardian:

A new website run from Plano, Texas, has proved that the Old Testament promise of manna from Heaven has relevance in the digital age.

GodTube, an evangelical twist on YouTube, its secular video-sharing equivalent, has generated so many hits that a London-based hedge fund has poured money into it. GLG Partners, which has no known religious affiliation, has backed GodTube with an investment of $30m. With almost 80% of the American population - about 240 million - describing themselves as Christian, there is a thriving market for the site.

Since its launch last August, GodTube has uploaded more than 100,000 videos, all with an overt religious theme. Broadcast Him is its slogan, though the site’s executives also employ the catchphrase Jesus 2.0.

nothing like trying to insulate a population from reality….

like the con of the Global Day of Prayer which culminated on May 11 but got rolling on May 1 with 10 consecutive days of prayer for the world by millions…or so they say…in some form or another…it seems odd that in that same 10 day period there was a Cyclone that hit Myanmar (May 3rd) and caused thousands of deaths and a massive earthquake hit China (May 11/12) which caused many thousands more….

GodTube: A place where easily manipulated, often indoctrinated, non-thinking believers use social reinforcement to justify their irrational beliefs in order to preserve the mythological, manmade idea called “God.”

This site will be a cash cow (sorry for the metaphor, Hindus), but long-live secular YouTube.

Pam, calm down, eh? It’s just a website. I’m very far from Christianity, but I don’t understand the outrage you’re expressing.

Secularism is meant to preserve the right to practice religion by keeping it separate from government as well as keeping free-thinkers safe from religious intolerance.

^ cured of all ills and life will be wonderful and global warming will not affect you and old age will avoid you and all infirmities will be visited on others less fortunate.  Further, you will live blissfully, happily, forever!  Isn’t that wonderful?

GodTube: A place where people can justify irrational belief, seeking approval of fellow non-thinkers to reinforce their bigoted mythology.

It will be a cash cow, certainly, but long-live secular Youtube.

There are so many things wrong with religion, it is amazing that so many people make such a display of believing what is transparently false.

This critic isn’t only about Christianity, or even Abrahamic religion in general, but in the way Chritianity is being hyped.

I have a cousin who told me that her husband had researched religion and found that Mormons averaged higher incomes than other denominations and therefore they became Mormons. I think she didn’t realize what that statement revealed about their religious choice.

It is a wonder that Christ is supposed to be the be all and end all of Christian belief, but when the old books of the Bible contradict the forgiveness and charity taught by Christ, most embrace the contradictions offered by the old prophets, who were on the whole a group of hateful and nasty people and then they talk about Christianity. Well Christ never said he wanted people to be rich, or that belief in religion would bring wealth. He wanted people to be foregiving and none judgmental and use their energies to improve themselves, not to force others to follow his teachings. We know how well that has worked.

Now the improving attendance at some churches is being motivated by magical thinking, say you love Jesus and your bank account will grow, say you love Jesus and your nasty personality will suddenly be loved by everyone. Well not exactly.
