Thomas Friedman Smells
detestablephrases.wordpress.com

Something smells fishy: Thomas Friedman’s analysis of environmental sustainability within the global capitalist system was questioned by protesters at a Brown University speech on Thursday.

Thomas Friedman, global capitalist and semantically inept columnist for The New York Times, was gastronomically assaulted by pie-throwers at Brown University on Earth Day this week. At issue was Friedman’s laissez-faire attitude toward solving global environmental issues, which protesters felt was structurally inadequate and ultimately regressive.

U.S. News & World Report:

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman—globalization’s well-versed Joan of Arc—was pied in the face yesterday evening at Brown University, the Brown Daily Herald reports. Just as the writer was about to begin his lecture, a female audience member in the front row “leapt” out of her seat and threw a bright-green pie in his face. Immediately after, a male accomplice jumped onstage and distributed fliers explaining the stunt. The “Greenwash Guerillas,” as they called themselves, then ran out of the auditorium. The woman has been apprehended by campus police.

The pamphlets thrown to audience members identified the pair as activists who were acting “on behalf of the earth” and “all true environmentalists” and contained five bullet points explaining why “Thomas Friedman deserves a pie in the face.” These include “his sickeningly cheery applaud for free market capitalism’s conquest of the planet” and “for helping turn environmentalism into a fake plastic consumer product for the privileged.”

The pamphlets said Friedman’s idea of “green” was “as fake and toxic to human and planetary health” as the artificial cream on his face.

As much as I enjoy the attention drawn by such actions (pie throwing), at some point it’s questionable both tactically and logically.  Firstly, the people who would most benefit in learning the hypocrisy/idiocy of some of Friedman’s writings (The World is Flat was awful awful, both in terms of its writing and message, but From Beirut to Jerusalem was certainly interesting) are more likely to be revolted by the tactics than to ally themselves with the pie throwers.  Secondly, is pieing people in the face really the proper response to those you disagree with.  It’s one thing to pie IMF Representatives or George W. or whatnot, but a columnist who doesn’t write what you’d like him to write, regardless of the veracity of either side, should be responded to by reasoned argument, not a pie.  The story now, of course, is the wacky “liberals” who resort to throwing pie and looking insane, rather than whatever reasoned criticism a real protest could have brought.  This stuff plays into what the powers that be want, of course, while real dissent is essentially silenced.

Serves him right. He’s never apologized for his support of Bush’s invasion of Iraq either and he should have been pied for that years ago!!!!!!

I would cheerfully pummel Friedman all day verbally but the pie throwing makes his intellectual opponents look like assholes.

I started reading Friedman’s “The World is Flat” and hated it after about a page and a half. It seemed both naive and ignorant, which surprised me.

Was it a real pie they wasted on him?

Even more satisfying was the aftermath of the “assault,” TF was completely discombobulated by it.
