Jimmy Carter: Guess Who I?m For

The former president and superdelegate wouldn’t tell a Nigerian reporter which of the Democratic candidates he intends to support, but he offered a pretty good hint: “Don’t forget that [Barack] Obama won in my state of Georgia. My town, which is home to 625 people, is for Obama. My children and their spouses are pro-Obama. My grandchildren are also pro-Obama. As a superdelegate, I would not disclose who I am rooting for, but I leave you to make that guess.”

This Day:

Carter, who is a superdelegate from Georgia state, gave this hint at a media interaction after the Carter Center Awards for Guinea Worm Eradication in Abuja yesterday.

Carter, who was accompanied by his wife Rosalynn, did not profess a direct support for Obama but rather choose to make a veiled statement.

“We are very interested in the primaries. Don’t forget that Obama won in my state of Georgia. My town, which is home to 625 people, is for Obama. My children and their spouses are pro-Obama. My grandchildren are also pro-Obama. As a superdelegate, I would not disclose who I am rooting for, but I leave you to make that guess,” he said.

Kucinich endored Obama early on in the campaign, I hope he gets a seat in the Obama cabinet.

Dennis Kucinich has more integrity in his little toe then Donald Rumsfeld could muster in his flawed lifetime.

Learning on the job is exactly what the Obama administration should embrace - to be teachable is a good thing.

Kucinich was built to be a Secretary of State just as John Edwards was destined to become our Attorney General.

When you build the house w/strong materials there is little fear the roof will gave in from the inside.
Put the team together Mr. Obama - lets go. America is sick & tired of being sick & tired.

Hillary Clinton is a corporate lawyer, a former member of the Wal Mart board of directors, and, until her recent debate conversion, an outspoken advocate of the neoliberal policies of NAFTA & the WTO.  She is also the second largest recipient of healthcare insurance industry campaign contributions—second only to George W. Bush.  The Clintons betrayed the American working class when they joined with Geo. H.W. Bush in ramming NAFTA and the WTO through on the fast track, in pressing for deregulation of finance and in passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 which permitted a massive consolidation of corporate power over what we see, hear and read.  If you consider yourself either working or middle class you have nothing in common with these corporate charletons.

Obama wasn’t my first choice.  I would have preferred Dennis Kucinich, who was the only candidate who supported single-payer healthcare, but with an Obama presidency, there is a real chance to finally move this nation in a progressive direction.

Yeah, I am sure Hillary is prepared to lead—right down the toilet, which is where her vote to authorize the $3 billion war in Iraq has taken this country.

Former President Carter is a tribute to humankind.  However, his Presidency would be similar to an Obama Presidency.  Carter’s started out as a “fresh”, “change” candidate.  He also had a very naive, inexperienced administration..with a few strong members.  His Presidency was a time of fiscal (inflation/oil/etc.) and international crises…(Iran hostages).  President Carter is a man of peace…but he also learned on the job and in some ways did not exhibit the strength and muscle America needed.  I believe President Carter sees much of Obama in himself.  However they share many of the same weaknesses.  We can’t afford an “I learned on the job President”.  If you remember President Reagan won in a landslide.  We don’t want a One-Term Obama.  Senator Hillary Clinton is ready to lead from Day One!  Hillary Clinton for President.  (These are my personal opinions and do not reflect the opinions of the Clinton campaign.)

ok….there is stuff to like about jimmy carter, but let’s not get carried away. carter had quite a bit of the technocratic/systems approach in him. his belief that “free” trade was so obviously right caused him to tell david bonior that he was ashamed of him after the michigan senator cast a negative vote on nafta. also, in mid 1979, carter, at the urging of fellow trilateralist “zbig”, signed a secret executive order authorizing funding to “opposition” forces to the then soviet friendly government in afghanistan. brzezinski told carter that this would be a chance to give the soviet union their own vietnam.  the rooskies, not liking the instability being created in a country on their border, took the bait and invaded a half year later. “freedom” fighters…taliban…osama.  and, as they say, the rest is history.

Just think…if the American people had listened to the cardigan Carter back in the day, we might not be facing so many of the monumental problems that we face today.

During an interview Jimmy Carter made a comment to this effect.  He said, “Sometimes people claim my administration didn’t get any thing done and what they don’t understand is all the work we did to make sure certain things DIDN’T happen”. (paraphrased)

In hindsight, we can certainly credit him with that.

Weather,

I was thinking the very same thing, (about Jimmy Carter being such an excellent addition to an Obama Cabinet). And, it made me think of this article by Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was National Security Advisor to Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981.

President Carter may or may not feel up to the rigors of such a post himself, (I don’t know, but I think he IS pretty amazing, so probably he could do it with his hands tied) but I think Zbig is actively involved in at least an ‘unofficial’ advisory position to Obama now, and that is a positive thing.

Anyway, this recent piece from Zbig is impressive, (at least to me) so I thought I’d share it here. (I did post this on another thread, with some additional comments of my own. But I’ll just post the link here for whoever may want to read it.

It’s just such a good feeling when you find out the “little” people are paying attention.

Carter isn’t little. He’s the ONLY living giant, we can call Mr. President. But he comes from humble roots.

I am almost daily delighted when another friend or relative from another typical small town somewhere in America calls or writes, to remind me to support Obama!

Conservatives for the most part, they want honesty and integrety back. It’s been gone quite long enough!

One of the few authentic examples of grace and dignity you’ll see at this stage in the proceedings.

Obama would be lucky to have Jimmy Carter sit in a cabinet or advisory post.
He is seasoned, wise and humble the antithesis of….
