McCain Trails Democrats in PollPosted on Mar 5, 2008A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows John McCain losing to either Democrat—Barack Obama beats him by 12 points while Hillary Clinton wins by half that margin. According to the survey, McCain’s age is significantly more troubling to voters than either Obama’s race or Clinton’s gender. Although McCain is a white man, a McCain presidency, like that of either Obama or Clinton, would be historic: He would be the oldest president ever. While he wins the experience debate with either opponent, the poll shows that, like his age, domestic issues and his support for the war in Iraq are problems for McCain.

I don’t think that the age problem because as bad as it did until the bushies took over. Yes, I know it was becoming that way before, but it’s a combination of things that don’t have anything to do with the fact that there are younger kids.
Yes, it’s a scandal, because elderly people cannot exist on what SS pays in a place like LA, or really anywhere else.
And, some pollsters DO ask about class, and age, and we’re doing alot more of them now. But, they aren’t political polls. They are in fact in depth research, and money for those has been cut as well. The information IS available for any of these politicians who want to look at it. The problem is that the MONEY is not, and it won’t be, as long as they are pooring trillions into a war, and continuing to give tax breaks for the richest of the rich.
NONE of this has ANYTHING to do with John McCains age, because John McCain could care less than a damn about the suffering of other older or poor people.
His age is a problem as president first because of what is his noticeable dementia, which only gets worse. Then there’s the problem that he cannot adapt to a 21st Century world, and we ARE in the 21st Century. He can’t adapt his thinking or reasoning to that. It is MORE DIFFICULT to do as we become older, which is why I needed to return to school to figure out what the hell was going on in the world.
And we can’t stop those changes. So if we’re going to survive, we need to learn how to adjust to them. The plain and simple truth is that older people simply don’t make those adjustments easily. That’s not a NEGATIVE CRITICISM as much as it is a statement of fact. He obviously cannot be as effective as a younger person in this 21st Century. I’m not suggesting a kid needs the job, but even the everyday working class folks look forward to retiring by 65 or so. There’s a reason for that. They deserve to.
So why do we figure that a 73 year old dude can do the job as well as a 47 or 48 year old? That just seems like common sense to me. I could see him being an advisor maybe, though I know a bunch better ones than him, even though their just as old.
Still, how many jobs could McCain get on ‘the outside’ at his age? So, he should just take his congressional retirement and sit down.
And yes, it is a scandal with the way Americas elderly are treated. But again, until our government stops spending trillions to destroy other nation states, we have nothing here for our own.

Eric:
I’m not voting for messiah-in-chief. I’m voting for a president. Indeed, it is the “religious” nature of so much of Obama’s campaign that is one of my greatest worries. The use of religious language to describe both the campaign and Obama himself are at best pandering rhetoric, and at worst a dangerous misappropriation of Christianity.
Indeed, one flier mailed to South Carolina voters stated: “Guided by his Christian faith, Barack Obama is the leader we can trust to challenge the ways of Washington.” I have heard of no such language being used by Hillary.
I am not suggesting that Obama does not believe in a strict separation of church and state, or that he would be a “bad” president in any particular regard. But I question the wisdom of him or those on his campaign so intensely associating him and the campaign with religious language and symbolism.
Peace.

but he loses to both Democrats in the ‘brains and/or wisdom debate’.
Better the dodgy but clever business shills in charge than the unpredictable, ‘honourable’ war-monger.

That’s all I was saying. OBVIOUSLY Jesus is not here to vote. And OBVIOUSLY if he did vote it would not be mixing church and state since the man was citizen - duh.
I also don’t feel that the government should take our money and force us to help others with it. In a perfect world we would all do that on our own. But weigh that against McCain wanting the government to forceably take our money to KILL KILL KILL and I think Obama is the better candidate.

Lets hope theres more to it than McCains age, since thats about the one and only reason I can think of NOT to oppose him. But the story leads off by noting that voters are more concerned about his age than about Obamas race and Clintons gender. Agism continues as a largely acceptable form of discrimination in what has become an adolescent if not downright infantile culture. That agism continues as acceptable is also born out by the sheer fact of circumstance in which millions of the aged find themselves after a damn lifetime of paying up. Certainly, not where McCain is at! Hell be fine, despite agism, unlike so many who have been and continue to be treated so badly, fairly meager Medicare, notwithstanding. Dilapidated, over-priced nursing-homes and other such facilities are everywhere, though hidden from view or just ignored. Old people are even more of a bother than heretofore, unless celebrated for some considerable achievement most never achieve; the vast, vast majority forever anonymous.
This societys treatment of the elderly is a long-standing scandal, same as its failure to supply healthcare to so many kids, not to mention (literally) adults. But we dont hear so much about failing the elderlyin a lot more ways than one, including in terms of cultural attitude toward aging. (For those not in the know, a Social Security check wont even cover rent in places like Los Angeles.) Meanwhile, fewer and fewer med students are specializing in geriatrics, which just isnt quite hip (no pun) enough.
It might be even more of a scandal, and very telling, that voters are concerned with age at all, OR with race and gender. No pollsters ever asked about class, of course, since its inconceivable that anyone not of the upper sort could possibly become president.
We dont do working class, nor poverty-stricken, and we dont do age. All who fall into the first demographic and most who fall into the second need not applynot for high office and not for the good life, thanks anyway.

Fifteen percent of the sample aren’t even registered to vote. Also note that the sample is 55 percent Democrat, 36 percent Republican, 7 percent Independent.

How about Obama’s age? Many feel he’s too young.
This kind of poll is so premature at this point as to be useless - just like the LA Times poll last week that showed McCain would WIN against a Democrat. Oh well. Keeps the pollsters working anyway.

I am also of the belief that we need to help our neighbors and the poor. But I think it should be done voluntarily, either directly to the person of need or to a charity. I don’t agree with the government getting involved in the business of taking people’s money against their will to hand it out as they see fit. And that’s where I disagree with the liberals in government. Having said that, a McCain presidency would just be 4 more years of Bush, and I think we’ve had enough of that than we can tolerate.

ABC poll is a garbage based on all adults. When pollsters include only registered or likely voters, the election is too close to call…

We have an over abundance of polls and pundits in this country, neither of which are very accurate most of the time.
McPain should lose by at least double the percentages given if the average voter in this country has any common sense left. That’s why I figure it’ll be much closer than expected.
Don’t count out Diebold and/or the Supremes.

Eric Allen Bell - Your belief and your courage to express it are to be commended.
I don’t think Jesus would have voted for (anyone), however, because he seemed to have had a firm conviction that religion should stay out of the state and the state should stay out of religion. I only mention it because those today who profess to follow him to the letter seem to have struck out that particular ‘letter.’

Jesus Christ didn’t come to Earth merely to vote, Eric Allen Bell….. and he was murdered by the state and the church at the time for his troubles.
He doesn’t need you putting words in his mouth now even if you have heard all the things you would like to hear from someone who can never deliver on his promises…..

I am not a religious person, but I have read all 4 gospels. Nowhere in the gospels does Jesus say that we should make laws against people that make us uncomfortable. I seem to recall him instead saying something like, Whoever is without sin cast the first stone.
I am pretty sure that if he were living today, and turned on Fox News, and saw OReilly spewing his hatred and Ann Coulter calling John Edwards a faggot that he would get up and kick the in the TV.
Jesus was a hardcore dude. He told his followers to be tolerant, feed the poor and love each person as you would love yourself.
I recently watched a speech on YouTube. It was given by a man who claims to be a devout Christian himself. This man is constantly being accused of being a Muslim because of his race and his funny name.
So in this speech, this man said something that at first I wasnt sure if I agreed with. He said, I am my brothers keeper. If my neighbor is suffering, I am suffering. If my neighbor is sick or living I poverty, then I too am sick and living in poverty.
I thought about Jesus Christ and wondered where he would stand on that. Would Jesus be a Conservative? Would Jesus say, I know McCain wants to lead this country into more wars, but I must vote for him because saving money on my taxes is more frankly more important than innocent human lives and I can’t stand being a Liberal?
I say hed be a bleeding heart Liberal. Yes, that L word that a.m. talk radio has trained us all to despise and to think of as wimpy and lame and frankly just uncool.
Somehow I think that the guy who coined the phrase, Love your neighbor as yourself would not be able to get behind the Iraq war or the next war that McCain cant wait to start.
Would Sean Hannity, Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Bill OReilly and Ann Coulter have been Jesus disciples? I dont think theyd have the stomach for it. And what about George W. Bush, the man responsible for the deaths of 1.1 million Iraqis, half of them innocent children? Jesus would certainly accept him unconditionally, but old Dubya wouldnt have the time or the tolerance for such a bleeding heart liberal. It would get in the way of all his plans.
So when I was watching all of these speeches and listening to Barack Obama, I was really struck, seriously it really touched my heart when he said, There is not a conservative America and a Liberal America. There is not a black America and a White America. There is not a Gay America and a Straight America. There is the United States of America. I was practically moved to tears. He didnt have to remind the audience, by the way, that he was giving them any straight talk. He just spoke from his heart.
Here is a man who expects more of us than we expect of ourselves. He seeks to unify instead of divide. He seeks to heal instead of to kill. He represents everything it means to be an American and is, by far, the most Christ-like candidate running for President today.
Barack has never gone for the cheap shot. He always takes the high road. Whatever he lacks in experience, like JFK or Roosevelt, he makes up for it in his idealism, in his belief in the goodness of human nature and in his ability unite and inspire. Im pretty sure that if Jesus Christ were alive in November he would vote for Barack Obama.

The truth is right here. McCain doesn’t stand a chance against ANY democratic contender. It’s only a matter of who would beat him worse.
According to this, (and my crystal ball says the same thing) it would be Obama.

Grandpa suits are still in style with the Repug’s…. they can’t imagine anything else. When the clock ticked over to 1.01.2000, they believed that it simply went back to 1.01.1900, uhh.
Regardless of the age of the McCain supporters, this is the ultimate form of denial for them. They repudiate climate change, they repudiate the failed American empire and they are totally unable to go forward into a new dawn - so they want to bring back the past.
And that is what they will get if they succeed. The Apocalypse of tactical nuclear warfare as somehow sustainable in order to force their way upon the rest of the planet - and the environmental consequences which will inevitable destroy human civilization forever.
