Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama speaks at a town hall meeting with veterans in San Antonio, Texas, on Monday.

Perhaps responding to accusations made by pundits and politicians that Barack Obama has been given kid-glove treatment by the media, reporters at a San Antonio, Texas, press conference made sure they didn’t invite similar criticism Monday night.

Washington Post:

“I don’t have any preliminary statement,” Obama said as he began his news conference, encouraging reporters to “just dive in.” That was a mistake.

Tom Raum of the Associated Press led off with a question about whether an Obama aide had told Canadians not to take seriously the candidate’s public rhetoric critical of the NAFTA trade agreement. “Let me, let me, let me, let me just be absolutely clear what happened,” Obama answered, explaining that the meeting was a “courtesy” and involved no “winks and nods.”

Then an agitator—columnist Carol Marin with the Chicago Sun-Times—broke in. Marin, a visitor to the Obama entourage who accused the regulars of being too “quiet,” accused the candidate of concealing details about fundraisers Rezko had for him and a real estate transaction between the two.

“I don’t think it’s fair to suggest somehow that we’ve been trying to hide the ball on this,” Obama answered. But this only provoked a noisy back-and-forth between Marin, Sun-Times colleague Lynn Sweet and Michael Flannery from Chicago’s CBS affiliate. “How many fundraisers? . . . Who was there? . . . Disclosure of the closing documents?”

You know, Maani, I’ve followed this contest since day 1.  I’ve heard and read most of the words generated by these candidates.  If Obama is about transparency, integrity, hope, change, then he has to put himself out there.

He says he’s been vetted 100 times over and there’s nothing he has to duck from.  Great. I believe him.

He has to show that he can handle the flack because we know there’s a ton more coming his way.  He should not only critique Hillary (which is hard by the way because they do share similar views on most things differing mostly in tactics) but push his priorities.

I’m tired of talking about the candidates and really want to debate more issues.  I want more specificity instead of better education, improved job opportunities, hope and change.

Nope, I didn’t mention being from Ohio moron, I said that my mother was from Ohio. She also left there long ago, but since she is from a large family, I still have many relatives there.

And nope, I wasn’t ‘run out’ of Texas. I ESCAPED Texas, after moving there voluntarily to help them out. Now I admit that Texas is very much a prison, but I wasn’t a guard there. It’s just not my thing...prison or guarding.

I think Texas should secede from the Union, and just take it’s place in the geopolitical order as the 5th world country that it is.

Aside from Austin, the place is the pits.

MackTN:

The following is the opening paragraph of an article in today’s NYT:

“Seeking to rebound from defeats Tuesday night in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island, Senator Barack Obama’s campaign signaled on Wednesday that it was preparing to sharpen its critique of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, challenging her contention that she has been more thoroughly scrutinized than her opponent.”

I believe this is likely to backfire, possibly hugely.  It is like when Gary Hart dared the press to follow him, saying “You won’t find any dirt on me,” and then promptly got caught with Donna Rice.  If Obama attempts to turn the media on Hillary (as if he needs to!), it will only end up turning on HIM as well.

And given the questions in the press conference noted in the above article and his reactions to them - and given other issues that the media is likely to scrutinize (e.g., Exelon, special interest money, etc.), I think he is making a huge mistake.

Peace.

Hillary changed her campaign tactics in the face of certain loss, and Obama, perhaps a little too overconfident, neglected to match her agressiveness with regard to the issues on the ground and in the air.

The Nafta thing really hurt him and he needed to respond by clearly stating his position on it in specificity.

He’s not going to win this without fighting, not just fighting back but also fighting with clarity on his positions.  He can’t just defend his papers, he has to have his supporters fight for his positions. He has created a void by allowing his supporters to canvass about hope and change instead of knowledgeably motivating people to an awareness of what they are specifically changing.

Hillary has filled his void for him.  Her voters, Latinos, for example, believe Hillary is advocating their issues.  By contrast, I don’t see any Obama supporters riffing on anything other than hope and change.  I fear this is what is catching up with Obama.

He’s going to have to change if he expects to put this thing away.

It’s worse than you think.  Obama has the best chance to beat McCain, but not because he’s the best candidate.  But rather if HRC gets the nomination there will be a black backlash who will either abstain or vote for McCain because they will look upon HRC at the spoiler who took away their “Black” hope and that is unforgivable.

The only way to over come this, should HRC get the nod, is to persuade Obama to be the VP!

Hillary just can’t stand the fact she has an inferior campaign. Now we get all these negative smears, which have no validity at all except to scare people who cannot decide until they get into the voting booth. Way to go. I guess it had to come sooner or later, though. It would be a mistake to think John McCain is really against using such attacks. Barack will have to re-assert his positions and echo his message louder now.

The media can kiss my ass. Just because they get called out on SNL means they have to act like Hill-bots.

A behind-the-scenes battle broke out late Tuesday over superdelegates who had secretly committed to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), with Clinton campaign officials scrambling to “freeze” them before they announced support for him.

The battle reflects the trench warfare that both campaigns expect if the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination stretches on to the Pennsylvania primary on April 22.........

The Obama campaign had an extensive “whip” organization set up to track and woo these officials, including members of Congress.

“We’ll wake up tomorrow and we’ll see where folks are,” an Obama aide said. “We have new support every single day.” http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0308/8838.html

PatrickHenry,

Actually, I HAVE been paying attention enough to know that Ron Paul is still in the running, and he IS getting attention from voters in most of the states that have so far had their primary/caucus hoe downs.
It hasn’t been a whole lot, and I can’t remember the exact percentages, but overall, he’s probably done better than Huckabee, who only had one or two state showings.

Now I admit that I’m still highly distrustful of the Ron Paul hidden agenda, (which isn’t so hidden for me) but I’ll also admit that he would be a better pick for the repugs than John McCain.

So, I don’t know what people are thinking, and especially repuglicans. I mean, they elected George Bush twice. (And I recently read that as many as 10 million Democrats voted for him as well, at least the first time around.)

So, what does that tell us about anything? I thought that maybe by now, because the current candidates ARE getting such scrutiny, that American’s were wising up. Maybe not the repugs though.

Now somebody posted something from Texas earlier, and said that he was in line behind a repuglican at the polls, who was voting for Hillary, because she wanted to be certain she’d have a chance to vote for McCain in the general election. That is just too bizarre, unless she believes that McCain will have a better chance against Hillary than he would against Obama. Then again, the voting process in Texas is so convoluted that I can’t possibly find a connection to that mentality, so I won’t try.

Aegrus,

You definitely handed out some good advice here…

• “Barack has NOTHING to do with the Rezko scandal, and if you keep banging on this door a flood gate of anti-Hillary TRUTHS will drown her campaign quicker than you can drop a sack of potatoes…. Drop it while you can because there is far more scandal on the Hillary Clinton side.”

But, these types never learn. Nope, they sure don’t. As a matter of fact, Outraged has already filled in some blanks on Hillary, (see her post above) and although Obama has stayed way too far at the top of the high road to reveal these things about Hillary’s history, (diplomatically questioning only what she accomplished as First Lady, and ONLY in reference to what she claims as ‘experience’) it won’t keep anybody else from lowering the boom (or the sack of potatoes) with some Hillary truths.

Matter of fact, now that Outraged has brought forth these historical facts, they’ve served as prompts for some other stuff that we haven’t questioned Hillary on at all. Guess it’s time to start filling in even more of the blanks.

This is the stuff that Maani doesn’t want to get out of course. And lib in Texas isn’t about supporting Hillary, but only about trashing Obama. That’s been the case with her for months. And, there IS a difference between genuine support for one candidate, no matter how misguided or ignorantly based, and pure hatred for another one, based on a combined dimension of racism and envy.

Now this visceral racist hatred isn’t always easy to spot…even in person. But…if one is exposed to it long enough, it’s obvious right off the bat. Such as it is with lib in TX.

The racist hate just rings right out, loud and clear.
Meantime, they both know, (or at least Maani does) that Obama has nothing to do with the Rezko scandal, but they’ll gain as much leverage as they think they can by twisting it. In the end, it brings so much attention to the real facts, that the truth prevails, and the innuendo backfires.

Then there’s the thing you’ve already mentioned…that sack of potatoes full of Hillary’s dirty laundry comes to light, when it might otherwise have remained in her closets.

They never learn.

1970’s
The Stephens Group was well-connected to another interesting Asian banking group, the billionaire Indonesian Riady family of Moktar and his son James Riady, who own the Lippo Bank in Indonesia. The Riadys are Chinese-Indonesian businessmen who, of all places, moved to Arkansas in the 1970’s, despite holding billions of assets in Asia. Stephens and Riady hit it off and soon Stephens and Riady bought a bank in Hong Kong. Stephens then invited Riady to invest in a Little Rock, Arkansas bank called Worthen.

1977
“Hillary Rodham Clinton joins the Rose Law Firm.”

1978
Mrs. Clinton, now a partner at the Rose Firm, begins a series of commodities trades under the guidance of Tyson Foods executive Jim Blair, earning nearly $100,000. (author’s emphasis). The trades are not revealed until March 1994.

The Rose law firm was the house law firm of Jackson Stephens’ Stephens Group investment bank in Little Rock. To be the corporate law firm of the Stephens Group was no casual affair.

1987
Officials at investment giant Stephens Inc., including longtime Clinton friend, David Edwards, take steps to rescue Harken Energy, a struggling Texas oil company with George W. Bush on its board. Over the next three years, Mr. Edwards brings BCCI-linked investors and advisers into Harken deals. One of them, Abdullah Bakhsh, purchases $10 million in shares of Stephens-dominated Worthen Bank.

1992
“In December 1992, just after Clinton had been elected President in a campaign financed at critical points by Jackson Stephens and friends, including the Indonesian-American Riady family, Vince Foster, an Arkansas friend of the Clinton’s, and a law partner at Hillary’s Rose law firm, met James McDougal. Foster arranged for McDougal to buy the Clintons’ remaining shares in Whitewater Development Co. That land deal was focus of Congressional investigation of the Clintons. McDougal was loaned the money for the purchase by Tyson Foods counsel Jim Blair, the long-time Clinton friend and commodities adviser who in 1978 had ‘tutored’ Hillary in her fabulously successful commodities speculation. The loan by Tyson’s Jim Blair to McDougal was never repaid.

No sooner did Bill and Hillary Clinton move into the White House, and the Tyson Foods-approved Mike Espy took over as US Secretary of Agriculture, than Hillary’s former law partner, Joseph Giroir, set up a corporation. It was called Arkansas International Development Corporation (AIDC). In fact, it appears that the AIDC was set up to do joint ventures with the Indonesian Lippo Group of the business partners of Jackson Stephens, Mokhtar and James Riady.”

“It is too bad it took the media so long to start asking these questions seriously."--Maani

And why aren’t these questions asked of Clinton...?

“One of the early winners was Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., which quickly became the biggest owner of television stations, bolstering its lineup of media properties such as TV Guide, HarperCollins and Twentieth Century Fox; quite a gift from legislation signed by President Clinton, which perhaps explains the warm relationship that subsequently developed between Murdoch and Hillary Clinton. Murdoch sponsored a fundraiser for Clinton’s senatorial re-election campaign in 2006, but when asked during the Iowa primary about Murdoch’s vast media holdings, including Fox News, the New York Post and The Wall Street Journal, Clinton ducked the question. Avoiding any reference to Murdoch, she conceded that “… There have been a lot of media consolidations in the last several years, and it is quite troubling.”

Obama re Rezko: “I don’t think it’s fair to suggest somehow that we’ve been trying to hide the ball on this.”

No?  Is that why he lied - bald-faced - at the South Carolina debate that his “only” connection to Rezko was “5 hours” spent as a “junior attorney” on “one case?” When the truth was that he has known Rezko for almost two decades, worked on a real estate deal with him closely for five or six months, and accepted over $150,000 in campaign contributions from him?  And that there may have been (as the trial may bring out) “favors” done in both directions, including when Obama was a State Senator?

But it is now “unfair” to suggest that he has been trying to “hide the ball” on all this?

And re the Canadian issue, he first said (in immediate response as the issue surfaced) that “no contact” had been made with the Canadian government by anyone in his campaign.  Yet now he says there WAS a meeting, but that is was just a “courtesy.”

Which is it?  Why lie the first time?

It is too bad it took the media so long to start asking these questions seriously.  Because if Obama DOES win the nomination, these things - and others that are sure to surface - may SERIOUSLY damage him as the Dem nominee, especially when the GOP attack and smear machine goes into high gear.

The Obamamaniacs are going to get a SERIOUSLY rude awakening, and realize that their can-do-no-wrong candidate has not only done wrong, but may very well be sunk by it.

Apparently, Barack-tinted spectacles make one short-sighted.

Peace.
