World Leaders Struggle With Kosovo Independence

Petar Pismestrovic, Kleine Zeitung, Austria

Kosovo’s declaration of independence has prompted both condemnation and cheers from world leaders. Whether in the U.N. Security Council or the European Union, global opinion is divided. In particular, the declaration has served as a flashpoint for tension between the United States and Russia, an ugly reenactment of the kind of jockeying for influence that was supposed to have been buried with the Cold War.

BBC:

Recognition by a number of EU states, including the UK and other major countries, will come on Monday after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, says the BBC’s Paul Reynolds.

The US is also expected to announce its recognition on Monday.

Three EU states - Cyprus, Romania and Slovakia - have told other EU governments that they will not recognise Kosovo, says our correspondent.

Russia’s foreign ministry has indicated that Western recognition of an independent Kosovo could have implications for the Georgian breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Serbs just occupied Kosova during the rise of the Serbian nationalism early 20th century from Ottomans, who by then were loosing the Balkans after 500 years of occupation. The borders of Kosova are well established and recognized. Now Kosova should be Free!

I can’t comprehend how a minority of 7% of the population, pretend to take off the land, the language, culture and the life of the rest of Kosova. Kosovars have the right to live free and independent in their land where they are born, generation after generation, live and will die.

You in the West may have missed it, but last week the Lakota Indians declared independence from the United States of America by formally withdrawing from treaties its defeated ancestors were forced to sign. Just like the Kosovars no longer recognize Belgrade, the descendants of Sitting Bull no longer recognize Washington. “We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us,” said a Lakota representative.

Let’s see.  McCain is in deep doo doo up against Obama or Clinton.  What does he need?  How about some international geopolitical instability?

Think about it.  With very little prodding and a smiley-faced green light from Bush and his cronies, this is the time that Kosovo declares independence by way of a simple declaration.  Why can’t a similar declaration be made by the Chechnyans vs. Russia?  The Palestinians vs. Israel?  The Tibetans vs. China?  The Kurds vs. Turkey or Kurds vs. rest of Iraq?  The Shia or Suni vs. the rest of Iraq?  The Basques vs. Spain?  The Quebecois vs. Canada?

The list goes on and on and on.  Some war has to start out of this somewhere—for the love of the Republican God!!!!

And as an added fringe benefit, this all leads to a need for more arms—great for McDonnel Douglas, Boeing, GE, et al.

Isn’t the 21st Century just grand!

J.S…..

The cold war never really ended——it just became less obvious as the rhetoric ebbed.  However, make no mistake, the Russian Bear never forgets and Russia will always remember our involvement in Afghanistan which was instrumental in the fall of the Russian empire.

Who says that the Cold War ended?  The good ole US of A has spent all these years trying to break off bits of what used to be the USSR’s sphere of influence and using NATO to encroach upon Russia.  This of course also helps American exports, since any new NATO member must retool its military with Western weapons.

Aha!  Iraq and Afghanistan must be at weapons glut.  Time for the merchants of death to find new markets. What better way than to revive the old Cold War.

Looks like the “War of the Blackbirds”, in the 1300’s, finally paid off.  One thing you can say about those Muslims, they’re a patient lot!  A neat recipe for statehood; invade a country, mix in an ethnic population, breed like crazy, cook up political stress, bake for 700 years and presto——a nation is made.

The Serbs should immediately break off diplomatic relations with all countries recognising independent “Kosova”.  What have they got to lose?  The opportunity to be 2nd class citizens in their own country?  EU photo-ops for their Pro-Western Reform-Oriented Democratic leaders?  Some aid crumbs from Brussels and Washington?  They have already ruled out using force and any economic leverage.  What else is left?
