A California senator is working to push a bill through the state’s legislative channels that would make global warming a required study topic in California public schools, but detractors maintain that the science behind Sen. Joe Simitian’s proposed academic addition is unclear or that the measure would introduce environmental propaganda into the schools.

San Jose Mercury News:

The state Senate approved the bill, SB 908, Jan. 30 by a 26-13 vote. It heads now to the state Assembly. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken numerous actions to reduce global warming, but he has yet to weigh in on Simitian’s bill. Other Republicans in the Capitol, however, are not happy about the proposal.

Some say the science on global warming isn’t clear, while others worry the bill would inject environmental propaganda into classrooms.

“I find it disturbing that this mandate to teach this theory is not accompanied by a requirement that the discussion be science-based and include a critical analysis of all sides of the subject,” said Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, during the Senate debate.

I think that making kids learn about geography, geology, the environment, bio-diversity and all its socio-political ramification is fine, but like many people have said the theory of global warming is still very much in dispute, get them involved yes thats fine, but you cant indoctrinate them with an issue that has no scientific consensus.

Simitian is behind the law requiring California motorists to turn on their headlights on rainy days…  This law causes an extra 5 million gallons of gasoline to be burned every year, producing an extra 100 million pounds of CO2. He is an environmental criminal.

Let me guess….the opposition is formed by the same people that think evolution is “just a theory”? And that in Global Warming issues “the jury is still out”? and that Brownie is doing “a heck of a job”
Ssd, very sad.

Finally a reason why it was good to leave that state.  There are so many good causes (gay rights, Armenian history, global warning) that I would want some teacher in school to address BUT NOT MANDATE EVERY LEVEL OF EDUCATION SQUEEZE IN!!  As important as any of these items are, it is BAD education policy to shoehorn them in the way the CA legislature is doing, essentially working to create a 200-day script for teachers to follow and not deviate from.  It would make sense for the state’s education department to create and share resources on any topic deemed worthwhile, but they need to step away from the direct demands on specific in-classroom cirriculum.  Its bad policy and even for a good cause, bad education.

“Environmental propaganda.”  Take a few seconds to consider that term.  Really.  Roll it around in your mouth and your brain for a moment.  “Environmental propaganda.”

Someone please remind me what planet I’m living on…

Peace.  (through climate change)
