 EU Leaders Balk at Bush’s New Flight PlanPosted on Feb 11, 2008
The skies won’t seem so friendly to Europeans looking to travel to the U.S. soon if President Bush’s list of new security demands is implemented despite the resistance and outrage it has sparked among EU officials, whose countrymen will encounter additional headaches if their leaders don’t get with Bush’s program.

Considering that there have reportedly been proposals circulating within the federal government which if passed would require all US citizens to request and obtain permission from the government in order to leave the country…it’s at times like these when one begins to suspect that the Bush administration is little by little deliberately attempting to isolate us from the rest of the world in order to set the stage for the creation of a 21st Century equivalent of the Iron Curtain. I think one can even make a plausible argument for the idea that the walls which are being built across our border with Mexico—ostensibly to prevent illegal immigration—are not as far removed from the Berlin Wall as we might like to think. If memory serves, the ruling governments of the Eastern Bloc nations always promoted the idea that the Iron Curtain was designed to protect the people from the corrupt and decadent influences of the West—even though the people knew that what was being described as a fortress was in actuality a prison and that the leaders of the government often indulged themselves in the very same “corrupt and decadent influences” from which they were supposedly protecting the people.
Let’s not forget that the act of one person imposing isolation on another person in the guise of promoting the latter’s welfare is often a hallmark maneuver of domestic abusers when practiced singly (as a frequent prelude to physical violence) and of cultists when practiced in groups (as a frequent prelude to brainwashing). In both cases, the enforced isolation has the same intent—encouraging, manipulating, or outright coercing the latter person to become so completely dependent upon the abuser or cult figure that they will submit passively to horrific treatment at their hands because they believe they have no other option.
Was was it that George Santayana once wrote? “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it?”

the U.K. has wimped out and is allowing china to dictate policy regarding the olympics. so why shouldn’t they allow bush the dictator to determine policy regarding air travel?

As a foreigner (Canadian) and a friend, it’s my duty to provide clear feedback.
Building higher fences - literal, virtual or figurative - only MIGHT keep “terrorists” out - but, FOR SURE, it keeps you IN.
Building fair play and good will (not by purchasing it but by DEMONSTRATING fair play and good will) is the ONLY WAY America will ever recover from the rending it’s reputation has suffered over the last decade or two.
I used to live in the US and, in past, have traveled and visited… and ENJOYED my experiences there. My family still owns property in Florida.
But, I haven’t crossed the border in 10 years and am unlikely to ever do so again. I will NOT go to the trouble and expense of getting a passport just to visit the USA… why should I? There’s nothing south of the border than I haven’t got just as good or better north of it… with one possible exception… it was -44c the other day… I wish I had been in Vero Beach with my sister that day!

But of course, because the EU hates us for our freedom too. Everybody hates for our freedom, so we must protect our freedom by turning into an insular pariah nation. I think that we should require all foreign tourists to stay in select hotels only; furthermore, they should be required to have a minder at all times. The DHS can operate our tourism sector…call it intourist, maybe.
This is slightly off topic, but there is a larger tug of war going on here between the US and the EU. Do all of you know that we have become the corporate dumping ground for all sorts of toxic chemicals? That’s right, our companies are capable of meeting EU health and safety standards, but would rather not do so here. The rest of the world (even China) is following the EU’s lead; there are many products that the Chinese won’t allow to be sold in China…but export to the US is ok. Neurotoxins, hormonal disrupters, heavy metals. Shipments of electronics get turned away by the EU, and then diverted here.
This is above and beyond the fact that ten years ago we exported 31.5M metric tons of corn/year to the EU. Now it all must be tested for GMO strains. Last year we exported 33,000 metric tons…barely enough to fill a single ship.
We’re being left behind because we refuse to grow up.
