Ellsberg Hits U.S. Media, Congress for Ignoring Nuclear Secrets Story

Legendary whistle-blower Daniel Ellsberg has written an Op-Ed shaming the American media for failing to report the shocking story of Sibel Edmonds. A former FBI translator who was recruited after 9/11, Edmonds has accused the agency of covering up evidence of a complex web of foreign governments, U.S. officials and nuclear secrets.

Ellsberg in a Brad Blog commentary:

And this is the time for those who have so far creditably leaked to the Times of London to come forward, accepting personal risks, to offer their testimony—- and new documents—- both to the Congress and to the American press. I would say to them: Don’t do what I did and waste months of precious time trying to get Congressional committees to act as they should in the absence of journalistic pressure. Do your best to inform the American public directly, first, through the major American media.

But perhaps today the alternative media and the international press are a necessary precursor even to that. It shouldn’t be true, but if it is, it’s a measure of how far the New York Times and Washington Post have fallen from their responsibilities to the public, to their profession and to American democracy, since I gave them the Pentagon Papers in 1971. They printed them then. Would they today?

It’s impossible to believe that they—- or Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal—- could not have acquired documents and testimony that Murdoch’s London paper reports on today. Now the challenge to them is to end their silence on that reporting and do their job.

Dear joeperez ,
I apologize for the mistake on my part of tagging you with the commentary by Expat . I am usually not quick to take offense either , but I find it offensive when some people read a person’s post and automatically label the poster .
I was of the impression that because you post as joeperez and I post as Gabir , Expat believed he was giving two “foreigners” a crash course of “Understanding American Cultural History 101 ” .
Again I apologize for my mistake and hope you accept olive branch I offer you .
            Peace be with you always

The comment you’re referring to was made by Expat, not by me. I may be a bit hedonistic sometimes but I’m not self-loathing and I hope I’m not egocentric. I’m not quick to take offense, either.

Dear joeperez ,
I really cannot glean one word out of your reply to my post that relates to my words .
Maybe what is going on here is that YOU fail to REALIZE or you ASSUME you realize facts about AMERICAN DECAY that no one else has witnessed for a period of roughly 150 years - a far longer period than your stated 60 years .
Maybe you should read Mark Twain , or Walt Whitman . Maybe you should watch the movies produced by Charles Chaplin , one of the most unsung heroes of all time . Chaplin in his movie , The Great Dictator , attempted to warn the world about facism and the plight of Jews at the hands of Nazi Germany . Yet today we are headed towards facism in our own country and religious and racial suspicions are as prevalent if not more than in the past . What does Martin Luther King Day mean to most non-black Americans besides a day off from school or work ?
And PLEASE , if you wish to describe yourself as hedonistic, self loathing, egocentric, fine - but you are mistaken in assuming that everyone else is of such low estate as you . Maybe you should read Dante again or in his entirety because you vagaries and assuptions lead me to think you are in need of some remedial education .

Cyrena:

Thank you for the heads-up re Niloroth.  He certainly wouldn’t be the first of his kind to be found here at Truthdig…LOL.

Odlid:

Below is a link to the main story, re illegal sales of nuclear secrets by U.S. persons to various countries.  [N.B. Doesn’t it strike you as odd that Pakistan had been trying to build a bomb since the late 70s - yet by sheer coincidence finally tested one in 1998, around the time that Edmonds is talking about?]  However, Edmonds has far more to tell, including re 9/11.

Peace.

Ellsberg in a Brad Blog commentary: “It’s impossible to believe that they—- or Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal—- could not have acquired documents and testimony that Murdoch’s London paper reports on today. Now the challenge to them is to end their silence on that reporting and do their job…”

Well, Murdoch was originally based in Australia and last year saw his papers there withdrawing from the loser, former prime minister John Howard, before the general elections in November.

That could be happening step by cautious step again as regards the US presidential incumbent. First London, today Sydney - but Fox News is running it as well!!!:-

US made ‘hundreds’ of false claims - US President George W. Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the September 11 attacks, a new study has found.

The study, by two non-profit journalism organisations, concluded the statements “were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanised public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretences”.

The study was published today on the website of the Centre for Public Integrity, which worked with the Fund for Independence in Journalism. White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said he could not comment on the study because he had not seen it.

The study counted 935 false statements in the two-year period after the 2001 attacks….... “In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003.”

Named in the study along with Bush were top officials of the administration during the period studied: Vice President Dick Cheney, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan.

Bush led with 259 false statements, 231 about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 28 about Iraq’s links to al-Qa’ida, the study found. That was second only to Powell’s 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 10 about Iraq and al-Qa’ida…....

“The cumulative effect of these false statements - amplified by thousands of news stories and broadcasts - was massive, with the media coverage creating an almost impenetrable din for several critical months in the run-up to war,” the study concluded.

“Some journalists - indeed, even some entire news organisations - have since acknowledged that their coverage during those prewar months was far too deferential and uncritical….. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23097074-2703,00.html and at http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,324753,00.html

What you fail to realize is that decay is a slow process.  We have not always been so, so ruled and dominated.  You have to appreciate our culture to see the process of dumbing, ignorizing, apathizing, and desensitizing to understand how we got to this point.  A culture of self, very carefully cultivated over the last 60 years by people far more dedicated to their ideology than us hedonistic, self loathing, egocentrics.  So, now we pay the price for our transgressions…..guilty of the seven deadly sins of Dante.  So, please pity us………..not!!!

What is the covered-up activity to which Ellsberg refers? I read his short Brad Blog piece but only found a bit suggesting that the US had (mis)handled arrangements to help Pakistan with nuc technology….when in the 60’s?  What is the story he, Ellsberg, wants brought to the attention of the public??

Of course Ellsberg is a hero for revealing the Pentagon Papers but even he is guilty of maintaining the myth of an American free press when he implies that the media were so much more honest back in 1971.

The fact is that the U.S. mass media have been the tools of the corporate elite almost since day one. For decades the CIA had direct influence over hundreds of mass media outlets under Project Mockingbird, including the Washington Post and the New York Times.

Suppression of the truth and the creation of a mythical reality which which to manipulate Americans is the purpose of the U.S. mass media and they’re very good at it.

All of Ellsberg’s commentary is probably true , but is he foolish enough to think the American media establishment actually has a conscience ???????
Go write your next best seller and then fall asleep for another decade . That’s what this “story” is really all about . Our media is the laughing stock of the world , just as our national image is . Shame-Shame-Shame .

Maani,

Just as sort of an ‘FYI’, having ‘dealt’ with Nimrod (aka niloroth) before, he doesn’t ‘miss’ the point at all.

Nope, this just scares the shit out of him, that it’s actually been exposed.

And, just to give you an example, of what you’re dealing with in niloroth, he’s still pushing hard for the official conspiracy of 9/11. In short, he’s just another bush administration troll.

Most of us have pretty much learned to ignore him, since his tactics are pretty standard.

As for this story…It’s VERY believable, and I don’t doubt this woman a single bit. It isn’t the first time we’ve heard from her, and there’s no doubt in my mind that there is no US media ANYWHERE, who would publish this, because it’s been that way for at least 8 years, even more depending on where one might live.

There’s also no doubt that Daniel Ellsberg would NOT have gone on the record with this himself, if he didn’t know it for what it is.

And yes, I too am surprised that Sibel Edmonds is still alive. Sometimes I’m surprised that I am.

Niloroth:

You miss the point.  We all know that the major media are owned by transnational corporations who use their control to protect the government.  And none of them - or their subsidiaries - are going to be allowed to put this on the air.  But neither is Sibel Edmonds going to give an interview to “the 2 independent city papers in my city, both of which are farther left than kucinich.”

Edmonds has been found to be a credible witness by all who have interviewed her.  If that were not the case, the FBI would simply label her a “kook” and be done with it.  But they can’t.  Because she knows too much.  Indeed, I’m actually surprised that she is still alive.

Peace.

Okay, so lets get this straight.  A woman who was contracted to do some contract translations after 9/11 has all kinds of information about not only the attackers on 9/11 but also about government agents selling nuclear secrets to anyone who wanted them?

And this idiot is pissed that no one in the american media will cover the story?  Really, so you are saying that the thousands of media outfits and papers that are not covering this story are all in on it?  Seriously, you are trying to tell me that the 2 independent city papers in my city, both of which are farther left than kucinich, are not covering this story because GWB doesn’t want them to?  How stupid is this guy?  What is easier to believe, that this lady is full of s**t that she couldn’t even know about if it were true, or that maybe, just maybe, all the other media outlets and new sources did some background checking and realized she was full of it?

And seriously, have the people who run truthdig even started to realize that their hits and relevance are dropping as they post these idiotic stories?  Seriously, tell your editors to stop drinking before posting articles, it is making you look really really dumb.

Sibel Edmonds was deposed by the 9/11 Commission, and revealed quite a bit about a number of things, some of which went straight to the top.  Yet the Commission chose to ignore her entire testimony, and gave her only a single footnote in the whitewash that was the 9/11 Commission Report.  As well, she was made subject to a virtual lifelong “gag rule” that prevents her from talking to the press or writing a book.

But she got around it.  A man named Karl Schwarz had a long discussion with her, in which she told him virtually everything.  If you are interested in this, Schwarz’s book is called “A One-Way Ticket to Crawford, Texas.”  The book itself is VERY poorly written and edited.  However, if you stick with it, you will find out an enormous amount about how our government is involved in drug trafficing, money laundering, etc.

Peace.
