Nepalese Monarchy Ousted in Vote

Posted on Dec 28, 2007

Nepal’s long-standing monarchy is about to become obsolete, after more than two-thirds of the country’s provisional parliament voted to amend the constitution and give the government the power to abolish the monarchy and establish a “federal democratic republican state” instead.

Al Jazeera:

Friday’s vote ensures the king will be removed immediately after constituent assembly elections scheduled for mid-April next year.

The agreement ended months of political deadlock with Nepal’s Maoist movement, who had insisted on an immediate abolition of the monarchy.

The government had rejected their demands saying it was against an earlier agreement to let the elected assembly decide the fate of the king.

Well this thread gets my vote for the greatest number of sophomoric, inane, and dismissive comments.

It is my feeling that we will hear more about this transition, and it won’t be good news for freedom loving people.

Been waiting a long time for this day. It will be interesting to see how the people in Nepal will go ahead from here though…

Will national interest come before political differences?

Too bad that pig of an opportunist selfishly grabbed his chance after the family massacre years back. They should have abolished the monarchy then as being totally based on a non-functional family......

Quote: The monarchy’s popularity has sunk since the death of the well-loved King Birendra in a notorious palace massacre of 2001.

Efforts by his brother, Gyanendra, to tackle the Maoist insurgency led to a worsening of the country’s human rights situation.

The only good King or Queen is an exiled King or Queen. The only fitting appelation for a King Or Queen is a dog. That the title still holds cache is one of the holdovers from a long ago time.As the horny princess said to her impotent prince"Someday my prince will come”.
