Capitol Hill Dems Push for CIA Tape Inquiry

Ted Kennedy
washingtonpost.com

Sen. Edward Kennedy was one of several Democrats to blast the CIA for reportedly destroying key videotapes, potentially compromising the accuracy of the 9/11 Commission’s findings.

A day after The New York Times released its explosive report that at least two videotapes showing CIA agents using severe interrogation tactics (that most nefarious of euphemisms) on terror suspects, congressional Democrats are registering their extreme displeasure and calling for an official investigation into what Sen. Edward Kennedy slammed as a “cover-up.”

The New York Times:

“We haven’t seen anything like this since the 18½ -minute gap on the tapes of Richard Nixon,” Mr. Kennedy said in a speech on the Senate floor, as reaction to the disclosure about the videotapes seemed to intensify minute by minute.

[Sen. Richard] Durbin, the Democratic whip, said he had written [Attorney General Michael] Mukasey to ask for an inquiry into “whether C.I.A. officials who destroyed these videotapes and withheld information about their existence from official proceedings violated the law.”

The speeches by Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Durbin followed an angry statement by Representative Jane Harman of California, head of the Homeland Security subcommittee on intelligence and terrorism risk assessment. Ms. Harman, who was the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee in early 2003, said she cautioned C.I.A. officials then not to destroy any videotapes pertaining to interrogation practices.

“To my knowledge, the Intelligence Committee was never informed that any videotapes had been destroyed,” Ms. Harman said. “Surely I was not.”

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee wrote to Mr. Mukasey and the C.I.A. director, Gen. Michael V. Hayden, today asking whether the Justice Department advised the C.I.A. on the destruction of the videotapes, and whether the department was now contemplating an investigation into possible obstruction of justice.

The revolution hasn’t even begun.

That is,very simply, this… What is your “workable” solution to all of the problems caused by the the, “biased, big-time Bad,” neocons?

Total public awareness. Outlaw secrecy and wire politicians to the Internet so they can be monitored by their constituents in real-time.

Politicians, especially American one’s all claim to believe an omnipresent ever vigilant God exists so on one level they’re already pretty much used to the thought of being monitored. In principle, my idea shouldn’t be that much of a stretch.

I don’t expect many politicians currently in power would be willing to submit to having Little Brother always looking over their shoulder so perhaps a new party that was committed to the idea is in order.

Imagine if politicians had to compete for votes by being more transparent than their opposition. Who would you vote for in such a case?

Yo!  Guys (all inclusive), the revolution is over.  We missed it while doing other important things.  The neo-cons have already won.  The names will change but the result will be the same.
So sit back and relax, the real change will happen so slowly you won’t even feel it.  Enjoy your life and everything will be okay.
Oh, by the way, did you hear about the protesters against Blackwater?  Yeah, they were tried and convicted in a secret hearing; you know, closed to the public.  Yeah, it was last week here in America.

I haven’t had a chance to read every-one’s comments, however I thought this might shed some additional light on the issue, if accurate of course.  Be sure to catch the VIDEO alongside the story, “Erased CIA Torture Tapes: Complicity of Top Saudis and Pakistanis in 9/11”.

Jbart, I hear ya, but I wouldn’t even know where to start. (looking) So, as much as I hate to ‘concede’, I think the best plan is to start planning to just get the hell out of dodge. Or maybe work on setting up a few states for secession, and just do like a grand shuffle. Anybody that wants to remain stupid and hang in there, can take the eastern half, and the rest of us can take the western half, or vice versa.

I guess we need a 2 or 3 state solution right here. If not, get your travel plans in order.

I’ve just read a million ‘denials’ of the intelligence from our own people, on the Iran intelligence. Bolton claims that it was all ‘political’. (like who the hell would believe him) and Gates is still calling Iran an unstable and chaotic force in the region. And, he’s obviously saying it with a straight face. Like if we’re somehow all so stupid, that we don’t know that Iran has been ‘in the region’ for thousands of years, and that it is the US who has created mass murder and mayhem in ‘the region’ for years now, and that they have no plans to stop, because George was quite serious about the WWIII that all of the above mentioned people (in your post) have planned to wage for at least a decade, and nothing, but nothing is going to get in their way.

When this many people have accepted this insanity, as if it’s just something that’s going to happen, then the best thing the rest of us can do is to try to get to a safe place, and try to save what little might be left of a nearly dead civilization.

If ALL the rest of us have known about the torture, and if MOST of the rest of us have known from day one, that 9/11 was all a big lie, then I simply cannot accept that NONE of Congress has been able to figure that out as well.

So, since we KNOW that dozens of them have been ‘aware’ all along, and never did anything before, then we have to assume they don’t care, and already have plans for saving themselves. I can only say that we do the same

Does not anyway consider it odd that this news would come out now? It’s real intent is to divert attention away from the Bush Iran lies, which if followed, could lead to more trouble that this CIA event.

Please, congress and media. do not drop the ball on the Bush Iran story, it can open up a whole can of worms regarding the misuse of power/government, corruption, the use of illegal propaganda methods on the American people, and more.

How about paying for “like-skilled” assassins?” , with “assasin’s that they could eliminate the “bad guys” for a price (which, as an American, I’m happy to pay for).
And that’s a promise that could, with real money, could “TAKE OUT” ROTHCHILD (AND all of his family), The ROCKAFELLARS, THE BUSHS’s, etc. Take part in the meaning, of course, which requires the killing and destroying their structure.

Remember when Mukasey refused to talk about/define/etc. water-boarding?  Anybody want to bet that he ‘knew’ about the tapes and the tapes involved water-boarding which was why he skirted the water-boarding issue - especially since it was about the only issue he skirted.

Talk has it that it is up to the Justice Dept. to investigate the destruction of the tapes.  Guess who’s head of Justice?

We all know how this one’s going to end before it even begins. Why bother.

Just BAU - our do nothing Congress doing what they do best.

They’ll posture away this issue, then the next issue, etc, etc. And they call this working for the American people. LOL

Oh well, it’s classic, lets conduct another investigation, that’s the best way we have of appearing to do something, when we are really avoiding doing anything at all.

How longs it going to take, 1 year 2 years? Or 10 years?

The Democrats are a bunch of gutless wonders, and that’s all that evil needs to succeed, an opposition party that will do nothing except posture…

Too little too late Ted.

You should have come out and confronted the ever fraudulent Chuck Schumer, Little Joey LIEberman and the queen of phony herself Diane Fienstein when they forced the Iraq war and are hard at work for going after Iran.

During the years of the Bush-Cheney administration, some CIA high-level leaders as well as rank-and-file personnel have behaved honorably, while others reportedly have acted dishonorably.

Like the nature of the intelligence community, these situations have sometimes been cloudy and unclear. Sometimes, solid indicators and truths have emerged.

Food for thought in the articles ...
