The Deadliest Year and Counting

849 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq this year, the deadliest for U.S. troops so far. While it’s true that the last couple of months have seen lower casualties than has been typical this year, those numbers cannot satisfactorily be explained by a more stable Iraq or some newfound love for Americans, and it would be grotesque to call the deaths of only 38 troops in October “good news.”

Los Angeles Times:

This year has become the deadliest for American troops in the Iraq war since the 2003 invasion, with the U.S. military’s announcement Tuesday of the deaths of five soldiers and a sailor in roadside bombings.

The attacks brought the total number of U.S. troops killed this year to at least 854, eclipsing the previous high of 849 set in 2004, according to data compiled by icasualties.org, an independent website that tracks Iraq war casualties. With more than seven weeks left to go in the year, the toll was on pace to far outstrip any previous year.
At least 3,857 American troops have died since the conflict began in March 2003, according to the website.

My son came home last night after being out with friends at a small get-together (a few beers, shoot the shit).  He said there was a soldier on leave who came, apparently a friend of friends.  I can’t give you exact verbiage but my son said this soldier (around 25 yrs. old) had made comments to this effect:

“It’s bad, it’s way worse now than when I first got there about a year ago….You just kill ‘em, just kill ‘em all, that’s what I think we should do, just kill ‘em all…..We trained them and now they’re shooting at us, we can’t see them, sometimes I don’t even know I’m being shot at until I hear the bullet hit nearby, they’re that far away and they’re using our weapons, we gave ‘em those guns…...We don’t know where the shots are coming from exactly, just over there, we turn our turret and just blast everything, everything….I’ve been shot twice, before I was maybe shot at once a week, now it’s everyday, we shoot back everyday….it’s bad…”

When he said this, the crowd fell silent, not knowing what to say or do…...it was a group of young adults…

I think this shows the reality on the ground and also the PTSD of this soldier.  Both terrible.  Like Bush said “America just doesn’t have the stomach for it”.......This is one time where I just hope he’s right…..

Hi Louise, and thanks for these links, as well as the game plan for dealing with the reps.

My own reps are fine with the impeachment, but I’ll send this around to others who need it. And, I can always travel north to do my bit at Nancy’s office. (though I think her place is already pretty well staked out - the ladies in pink are awesome)

And yes, I’m thinking that we should just replace the entire government. Start with a clean slate. There are a handful of good ones, so they can always re-apply, and we’ll grab them back up, since we need the experience. But overall, they just need to all go.

But, the thing with Dick Bush has to happen NOW, so I’ll get to work on these office visits right away. Maybe line up some buses. Far better to deal with them in person, just so they know we’re serious.

We’ll set up a fax operation for those who are too sickly or otherwise depressed to travel.

your lead-in conflates the number who have perished this year with the total who have perished since 2003.  talk about a double-take when that came across my news reader!
Gee noah,

I was so sure you’d notice that. (I missed it) But I know what you mean about the double takes. I’ve been having double and triple takes from my news reader for the past 7 years.

So, this REALLY does change things eh? I mean, 3.857 is just a number anyway, right? (except of course to those people who knew and loved them) So, are you suggesting that it’s not so bad spread over 4 and ¾ years, than if it were 10 months? Is dead not dead? Is it not even worse that we’ve continued to stay there after the first 500, and then the next 500, and then the next 1000, and the next 1000, and on and on…KNOWING full well that as long as we keep sending troops in, their gonna die, or be so wounded as to wish they were dead? (and we haven’t even considered that count).

So, I’m not real sure what your concern is here. The typo, or the dead troops? Ah, obviously it’s the typo. I guess we’ll just have to find out who did that and fire ‘em, eh? Gee, if we get to fire whoever made the typo, does that mean you’ll let us fire Dick Bush for killing all of these troops? (the 3,857 in 4.6377 years).

seriously, why are you not correcting the lead-in despite the many comments pointing out the error?  it is starting to seem suspicious.

BREAKING: Wexler Will Urge House Judiciary Committee to ‘Schedule Impeachment Hearings Immediately’
Letter Calling for Action Sent to Constituents After Kucinich Resolution to Impeach Cheney is Referred to Committee

Says ‘Vice President Cheney must answer for his deceptive actions in office’

As reported in full by David Swanson, in the wake of yesterday’s wild ride (and game of chicken) on the House floor concerning the privileged resolution filed by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), calling for the Impeachment of Dick Cheney.

The following is from a letter sent to constituents today by Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, where the matter has been sent again.

Wexler is now calling for the committee “to schedule impeachment hearings immediately and not let this issue languish as it has over the last six months.”...

“Okay folks, now is the time to start glaring at the congresscritters. Go to Congress.org and get the contact info for your representatives. Don’t waste time with email; it is scanned for buzzwords to trigger automated replies and otherwise ignored. Phone or FAX or visit the office of your congresscritters and make the message simple and clear; you will NOT vote for any congresscritter who does not vote for impeachment. If they reply with the usual “well it may not come up for a vote”, look them straight in the eye and say “Too bad, because if you can’t vote for impeachment, then I cannot vote for you.” If they whine that it isn’t up to them just keep saying, “Too bad. Make it happen. If you can’t make it happen, you are not qualified for the job.” If they say, “That’s not fair”, just say, “Life isn’t fair. Deal with it!”
Remind them that the name on their office door is written in dry-erase marker, and WE THE PEOPLE hold the eraser!

If need be, we’ll impeach the entire Congress.

If need be, we’ll impeach the entire #$%^ing government!”

The headlines says 3000+ were killed this year. The text says 800+. Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence

The fact that violence is down in Iraq is a good thing but is another con job by the Bush administration. Violence is down because the US decided to stop fighting the mullahs and tribal leaders. a lot of these people are responsible for the deaths of American soldiers. We armed them allowed shias to run out the sunnis and the sunnis to run out the shias from each others neighborhood. So naturally that are less people in your neighborhood to kill. So all Bush did was to divide up the country and arm everyone to keep the them from reentering the neighborhoods they once shared. With that in mind we can never leave. That’s why the US is building permanent bases in Iraq so we’ll have to babysit and most importantly to have access to Iraqi oil. If we ever leave all hell will break loose and everyone knows it. That why Bush is only trying to leave the mess he created to the next President so they can be blamed for the eventual failure of the shithole Bush created and left the country and next President with. The most heinous part is he is willing to allow our soldiers to die for nothing in order to preserve a already failed legacy and to put blame for the failure on someone else. So America look for continued deaths of American soldiers and the looting of our US treasury for years to come
