Musharraf Foe Calls on Pakistan to ‘Rise Up’

Pakistan’s ousted chief justice has called on the masses to “rise up and restore the constitution,” adding, “This is a time for sacrifices.” Iftikhar Chaudhry, who was fired and placed under house arrest when he refused to sign off on President Pervez Musharraf’s declaration of emergency, made the address by telephone. Mysteriously (or not), Mobile phone service in Islamabad suffered a breakdown as Chaudhry was making his remarks.

BBC:

Mr Chaudhry told around 500 lawyers on Tuesday: “The constitution has been ripped to shreds. The lawyers should convey my message to the people to rise up and restore the constitution.

“This is a time for sacrifices. I am under arrest now, but soon I will also join you in your struggle.”

Mr Chaudhry is under house arrest but his comments were broadcast on the internet by a private television channel.

The military dictator of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf, has imposed martial law and suspended the constitution in that country. Communications have been restricted and closely monitored. The media has been censored. Political rivals and other opponents of this brutal regime are being beaten, arrested, and detained. No criminal charges have been filed.

These actions are necessary, according to General Musharraf, to stem the tide of Islamic extremism and in the name of national security. The Bush administration feigned “disappointment” and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice meekly pleaded for “a return to democracy.”

Why is everyone being so hard on this pillar of civil liberties, human rights, and democratic values? It seems as though General Musharraf, unlike members of the U.S. Congress, has actually read our Patriot Act.

Right each time, RG. Nice to know you are not asleep. But go wash your mouth out, huh......

The Pakistani Supreme Court Chief Judge could actually be a rallying cry for Americans.Rise up and restore the Constitution. They must have a better system their judges actually rule against dictators. Here we have a different system.Whatever King George wants he gets.I will bet Pakistan returns to democracy before we do.

The president, who is also head of the army, has said he declared the state of emergency because of a crisis caused by militant violence and an unruly judiciary....

Chaudhry: “The constitution has been ripped to shreds. The lawyers should convey my message to the people to rise up and restore the constitution........”

Lawyers: “There will be war till the constitution is restored” and “Chaudhry we are ready to die for you”.

Bhutto: “We want elections to be held on schedule. The government refrain from violence.....”

No, it couldn’t happen in the USA. Bush has put everyone to sleep, uhh.

This whole Musharraf/Pakistan/Government Overthrow is a puzzle.

Pervez takes one tiny baby-step just over the line taken by his mentor, G.W., and look at all the brew-ha-ha he stirred up.

You think Baby Bush may learn from this, and reduce his own demented-dictator desires?

Probably not so long as he has an ounce of debit credit left. (Is ‘debit credit’ an oxymoron?)

Is Baby Bush a moron?
