Dr. Watson Hangs It UpPosted on Oct 25, 2007
Although his contributions to the field of genetics will probably continue to define his scholarly legacy, it seems that the final chapter of DNA pioneer James Watson’s career has been irrevocably marred by the reckless and inflammatory remarks he recently made about race and intelligence.

By thomas billis, October 27, 2007 at 2:27 am # Frank his work does not extrapolate to intelligence.Even in his remarks he did not refer to genetics he referred to empirical data.As I do not know him as an empirical anthropologist I believe my statement stands.Nor in my gleaning of the newspapers have I seen equally as brilliant geneticists to this point isolate the intelligence gene. You may chose to approve of his statements because of other fields he has mastered.I chose not to.
By thomas billis, October 26, 2007 at 4:14 pm # This idea of transference of intelligence in society is a novel one.Donald Trump gets to pontificate on any number of things that he knows nothing about.Dr Watson should only be considered when he talks about the double helix. Anything else he says is irrelevant. Why is it always people with the intelligence of a cricket that always defend the intelligence difference between races.I guess than according to that logic you are all inferior to the Jews and the Asians. They always do better on math and science. You cannot buy one without the other. It seems that making one superior to another race is fine.Making one inferior seems to be off limits.Maybe it is my participation in athletics as a youth but I always felt you are not more proficient than anybody at anything but if you can beat the other individual at the game you are better than that individual at that particular game.In other words to wake up in the morning and have such an ego to say I am better than a whole race of people just because of race seems like the height of stupidity.
By JFriedkin, October 26, 2007 at 1:48 pm # All this reminds me of Marlon Brando’s tearful retraction of his statement that Jews run Hollywood. When he made it, there was no real anti-semitism intended, It was his impression after 25 years in the film business. Anyone who would care to peruse the Hollywood Creative Directory will find ample evidence suggesting that Brando was just stating the facts. But a few days later Brando gave one his finest performances as the contrite Hollywood footsoldier. It’s all part of this myth we maintain that everyone is equal, that egalitarianism rules the day, that we live in a meritocracy, with equal opportunity etc etc. We are taught to ignore the ethnic and racial elephants in the room, for the sake of civility. Likewise, we safeguard our illusion that the super rich have earned their wealth - because the alternative leads to class wars. Clearly, we need these myths if society is to function. Without them, we will slide into hatred, hopelessness, resentment, and open warfare. But in an academic environment, we must be free to examine the evidence, and to go where that evidence takes us, no matter how unpalatable it is to the greater society. Without that freedom to explore beyond the social, political. religious boundaries, we would still be decorating caves, and dry humping trees in the forrest. Ultimately. shooting the messenger won’t make the message go away, but if it makes people feel better for a while, go for it. I’m a fan of whatever gets yer dishes done. But when you want to impose your illusions on the scientific community, count me out.
By Dan, October 26, 2007 at 12:55 pm # J. Philippe Rushton has not been “thouroughly discredited”. He’s been reprimanded for not following proper testing protocol a couple of times (according to wikipedia). His papers have not been refuted. Certainly there are some who disagree with him and other who agree but “thouroughly discredited” he is not. It appears to still be a matter of debate. This is a topic that is difficult to think about in an objective and unbiased manner, but let’s try not make false statements. Frank, thanks for posting the paper. That’s 1st piece of actual useful scientific information i’ve seen in all this hubbub over Watson.

By Shawn, October 26, 2007 at 7:35 am # People can be as angry and offended as they want. My question (as always) is simply “Is it true?” If the studies have been done, and the numbers support the claim, then Political Correctness in this case (and many others) is out the window.
By Aeneas, October 26, 2007 at 7:23 am # In Montreal, a local psychiatrist got into some serious trouble for making similar claims. They even went so far as to revoke his license to practice! This shows how far the dictatorship of political correctness has gone, when scientists need to be afraid to publish facts well known and acknowledged within the scientific community. Also, the situation is not unlike the whole global warming issue, where scientists who try to prove anything other than the religious dogma of human-caused global warming are silenced or refused grant money. It takes a lot of courage to stand out and say things that people don’t want to hear. I for one applaud Dr Watson.
By Sharon Ash, October 26, 2007 at 7:23 am # Dear Mr. Watson: Welcome to the pretend society, aka the United States. We pretend we are a nation of peaceful people when in fact, we are the most war mongering people on the planet. We pretend we are morally superior when in fact our society is the most violent in the industrialized world. The pretend list goes on and on and yes, it includes the fact that we pretend there are no differences in IQ amoung the races, in spite of the body of evidence to the contrary. Even if no empirical studies had ever been conducted, simple common sense would tell you when you look at the history of Africa, there is an intelligence gap. I once had a conversation with an African, in which I asked him what it would take for his country to improve their living conditions and for the people to understand the importance of not birthing babies which they had no means for provide food, etc. His reply to me was that unfortunately, eighty percent of Africans were simply not very intelligent. He, personally, was in the twenty percent who had high intelligence, but also had a lot of French blood in his family line. In the United States, we have about the same ratios with 20% of Blacks operating at or above the normal IQ levels and 80% below. Facts are simply facts. Do I believe anyone is any less of a human or should be treated inferior based upon their IQ score? Absolutely, positively, not. But I also do not believe it brings anything positive to anyone involved to try and ignore the facts. Add Your Comment |
