The World Watches California BurnPosted on Oct 22, 2007
Truthdig’s hometown is surrounded by wildfires, and although we were closely observing the developing situation, we were surprised to see the world react with such intense interest. It seems everyone from Pravda to the BBC has tuned in to watch movie stars’ homes being threatened by the flames. In case you aren’t already up to speed, seven Southern California counties are struggling against fierce and unpredictable blazes driven by dry, hot winds. On a personal note, our thanks go out to the firefighters who are battling this disaster and our thoughts are with the quarter of a million people who have been evacuated from their homes.

HAIL TO EMPEROR BUSH*T-and his “boys”[and girls]-Gonna go and “help” California- - -If we had the $$$$ and people at OUR DISPOSAL instead of “over there” and “deceased”- - -MAYBE there could have been better and faster HELP.I do believe that people build in places that are “accident prone”-I do believe that my insurance rates suffer due to these situations.I do believe there are “arsonists” out there who,for whatever reasons, get “jollies” after setting fires[I hope they string that person/s up by the B***s].I DO NOT believe this is an AL QUAIDA plot[but it COULD be]-I DO BELIEVE THAT WE DO NOT HAVE AMERICAN GOODS AND SERVICES ON AMERICAN SOIL AND THAT THIS IS DUE TO THE POLITICIANS IN CHARGE OF OUR ASSETS.I ALSO BELIEVE THESE POLITICIANS HAVE WAY TO MUCH POWER AND SHOULD BE “CURBED”.I ALSO BELIEVE BUSH*T SHOULD SEND HIS AND HIS FRIENDS CHILDREN TO THE “FRONT LINES”- -let’s see how FAST HIS WAR would end…....

““Looking at the clusterf@#k that is the evacuation of a small part of San Diego, youve got to know that we are not ready for anything really big.”“
Are you kidding me???!?!! This is about as orderly and civil an evacuation as anything we’ve ever seen. Heck, they even have Kosher food (you know, for those evil Zionists who control the media, Wall Street and the government).
This is what happens when a local government is prepared and a local populace does not sit around with victim mentality waiting for the government to come bail them out.

Right on, cyrena!

NBC: “Do you thing the president’s arrival will distract from efforts to fight the fire?” .....“Absolutely!” and “I just hope that he brings more than he brought to Mew Orleans…”

Cynical, yes, but this IS a very opportune time to divert attention away from the shambles in Washington. And Terminator/Governor Schwarzenegger has been seen ‘smoking’ on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPLC0ZfpFDE What better opportunity for him to make an impression (with aid from ‘Washington man’) with helping everybody instead of leaving them to suffer as during Katrina, eh? After all, he and whats-her-name are wanted to be up and running for the new “dynasty” in the White House (after Hillary, of course)! Maybe it was a cigarette rather than a match…...???

...“The Santa Anna winds have been bringing fire from the hills for as long as I have memory. Growth coupled with heat, drought and the winds, make this the worst of the perfect storm. It was just a matter of time.”...
Thanks Lousise,
Your memory jibes with mine. I’m a 54 year old Californian. This has happened consistently, all of my life, and the Santa Ana’s are as predictable as the moon. The cycle never changes drastically. We sometimes have rains and floods that cause mudslides and landslides. We also have drought that causes dry everything, followed by the Santa Ana’s which will feed the fires, and burn all of the trees on the hills/mountains/forests, which then leads to landslides as soon as the rains come to wash away those burned portions of the land that no longer have trees to keep them in place. And then, it starts over.
It is a cycle that has repeated inself for as long as I can remember, though admittedly there are parts of it that do change. (sometimes more rain, sometimes more drought)And yes, one could certainly imagine (or wish/hope) that we could have figured a way to make one of our natural resources (the waters of the Pacific Ocean) available to help fight what is also a natural phenomena; (the Winds that fan the fires).
Somehow, it is always very striking to me that these fires can burn out of control, in any area so closely situated to such a huge body of water. If we can build huge and complicated pipeline structures to dig and deliver OIL from the ground, or beneath the sea, why havent we done the same thing to establish a natural fire hydrant system connected to the Ocean? Its not exactly a new concept.
Meantime, heres a video from MSM breaking news of our Lt. Governor .
In this video, I think he speaks for the majority of us.
http://www.breitbart.tv/?p=7131
He mentions that in dealing with this disaster, (and the upcoming visit from -yeah him-) we would be far more assisted by our National Guard, (serving in Iraq) than we will be by the upcoming visit from the liar-in-chief.
It would be great if it would encourage the liar in cheif to STAY AWAY from us, since we have work to do, and his presence will only complicate the efforts.
I don’t think it will matter, but I’m glad he made the point. If he’s gonna “help” us like he “helped” New Orleans, we’d just as soon PASS.

Looking at the clusterf@#k that is the evacuation of a small part of San Diego, you’ve got to know that we are not ready for anything really big. The billions spent on homeland security and FEMA are down the toi-toi as sure as dry, oily SoCal brush is gasoline in solid form.

I’m not a fire scientist. Still, fires don’t usually break out the size of a California County. Shouldn’t some agency (hint, hint, Mr. Chertoff) have gotten a whole lot of water together to pour on the fire while the flames were spread no further than an acre or so? The fire has taken over San Diego County!
Meanwhile, Chertoff is busy building a fence in the ecologically protected dessert to keep the Mexicans out, because God forbid we should get any fruit picked during this harvest. Well, FEMA falls under his Homeland Security umbrella. Surely, he can smell the smoke of California where he’s barrier building in Arizona. What is he doing to get water and additional manpower to San Diego County?
Remind me, especially after the WTC and New Orleans; why did the Chimperor Nero create Homeland Security? This herd of anti-science Republican xenophobic bigots are indeed very special. These pinheads have managed to reduce our government to the ranks of an event in the Special Olympics. They are going to be the literal death of the Nation yet.

This is funny. I wondered how long it would take for this trail of comments to completely evolve away from forest fires and into “Bush is Evil”, “Global Warming!!”, “we asked for it”, blah blah. So predictable. Next we’ll be seeing a photoshop picture of Bush throwing matches into kindling.
A couple of folks actually have this one right. Santa Ana winds, combined with the dry season, yields fire, the same fires that have been sparked and raging for millenia, long before man, and long after man. Throw in population density and building homes in an area not conducive to it (like building a city under water level), and you have today’s news.
I do find it interesting, however, how no one is commenting on what happens when a) a state and local government is actualy prepared for a disaster and b) how 250,000 people can orderly proceed to a football stadium and not resort to looting, violence and the gimme more victim mentality. Also, I don’t see the lamestream media blowing it up into life after the cataclysm!
Clearly, state and local governments are best suited to handle something such as this. There is no need for the Federal government to be involved, unless the state and city have their heads up their asses (like New Orleans and Louisiana) or have diverted all the funds allocated to prevention and safety into their own pockets (like New Orleans and Louisiana).

: “...It is not nuclear physics or wrath of God bullshit. It is global warming and…”
Its not global warming either, thomas billis, but it certainly is true for Callyforians that “...we are doing it to ourselves…”. Dry forests and the Santa Anas have been around for a long time - and so too have wildfires. People keep building combustible houses in amongst the scenery and that is what happens again and again.
“Here come those Santa Ana winds again…..
Babylon sisters shake it
Babylon sisters shake it
Son you’re playing with fire
The kid will live and learn
As he watches his bridges burn
From the point of no return…”
(Steely Dan - 60’s-70’s)
Strange, though, how it has gone from just the usual fires frightening the denizens of “Richistan” (Malibu) this time to a full-blown Katrina-style quarter million refugees living in stadiums! That IS karma…. the “It can’t happen to us” mentality inevitably invites it.
What is worse is that this follows on the heels of Bush’s threat on the weekend to start World War 3. It is something similar to what happened in Australia, California’s wildfire ‘mirror’, when fires swept into the suburbs of the nation’s capital, Canberra, just before the last invasion of Iraq. It should have been a lesson and a warning - but Bush’s Neocon buddies there joined in regardless!?!?!

It is not nuclear physics or wrath of God bullshit. It is global warming and we are doing it to ourselves. If anyone watched sixty minutes and listened to that veteran of forest fires or has been following the non oil companies funded debate the answer is simple and I have no idea when people will wake up.Maybe when people start to spontaneously combust the message will get through.

Those who see Hell and damnation and the “wrath” of God in everything will blame the Lib’s for this. And those who believe in Karma will point out what goes around comes around [kinda the same as above] And nature lovers and Natives will point out Mother Earth is taking back her own.
No doubt a few nuts will blame Israel!
The forest service will blame unseasonably heavy early rains followed by extended abnormally high temperatures and drought.
And pragmatists will blame poor planning, too many homes in difficult to access areas with a high likelihood of fire.
And others will say how tragic it is that the supposed to be wealthiest nation in the world cant prevent these things from happening.
And still others will demand laws forbidding people to build in dangerous areas, like there’s a place on earth that isn’t.
The Santa Anna winds have been bringing fire from the hills for as long as I have memory. Growth coupled with heat, drought and the winds, make this the worst of the perfect storm. It was just a matter of time.
The real tragedy is that with all the billions spent on Homeland Security, no-one in that department has yet been able to grasp the need to plan and prepare and be there when a disaster comes! In other words, they don’t know the first [or the last] thing about providing any level of security for the homeland. Stuff happens, and you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what potential danger lies where. And how to make sure in advance adequate manpower will be quickly available.
Looking at the “hallowed” and the “smirker” across the page, one is reminded again. When you allow children to play grownup, it’s a good idea to keep them safely locked in the back yard.
Yeh, you knew I’d find a way to lay some blame on them, didn’t you?
On the other hand, maybe the states have to follow a regimen of lengthy protocol and excessive paperwork to get help from the feds when they need it, which like Katrina will probably arrive long after they need it. Assuming they can find the place.
Or, back to the other hand, maybe I’m wrong.
Maybe they are already there! In which case I apologise ... and would really like to know.
Meanwhile the nation and the world watches, and feels your pain.
